I hope you're planning to bring reserves along after the main fleets. Two Marine divisions doesn't sound like enough for much of anything at this point in the war.

I am going against big island garrisoned by 59th IJA Division, 148th IJA Regiment, Naval Fortress and one tank company. Do you think 2 Marine divisions is not enough ?
My warships can bombard island every 4rd day and it is in range of my B-24. I can take two more, but island SL = 35K. I do not have experience with this kind of operation yet, this should be test before main offensive

I think you could need something in reserve in case your first attack doesn't go as planned. If he has 6+ forts, your ships don't hit when you think they will or something else goes wrong. If it's not an atoll and you don't mind taking a bit of time to wear it down, your two Marine divisions well supported by tanks and arty with air and sea bombardments should be fine. With that many ships I wash thinking you were going for something bigger!

Thanks, temporary my opponent went silent, I hope he will come back tomorrow. I got you point, however in my opinion Truk it is "something bigger" :) I will start packing one more USMC Division and two more Tank Bn on xAP as soon as possible.

BTW. First bombardment by cruiser TF has confirmed only location of Naval Fortress there.

Truk is definitely bigger! It's got some of the best defensive guns in the game, and is definitely a tough spot. I think more would be safe. Use LSTs for the tanks, as you don't want to unload any longer than necessary against the fortress.

Should be fun!

I have 2 AGC, a lot of APA, AKA, LST. According to my plans all LCUs should be on land during day one.
Until now the only fail is that I have loaded Amphib Force HQ to 3rd AGC in separate TF and game does not allow me marge both amphib TFs for unknown reason.

Sometimes the game likes to convert my amphibious fleets to landing craft. When it does that I cannot merge other amphibious fleets and must change it back to amphibious first

Might help to have a some combat engineers and tanks. actually, that would absolutely help during the initial assault

He's got 2 tank units included already, and the Marines at this stage have a ton of combat engineers, so he mitt be okay with those.

28th - 29th Nov 1943.

Oil centers destroyed:
- Palembang 886 --->>> 14 still online
- Balikpapan 272
- Djambi 155
- Samarinda 56
- Lanchow 0
- Java Oil captured 225
-----------------------
total lost count: 1558

Southwest Pacific HQ:

5th USAAF is continuing destruction of Palembang without resistance.

South Pacific HQ:

Two SCTF (cruisers) bombarded Truk. Spidery set minefield there during night 28/29 and 3 CL were damaged by mines. Just system damage, max 15 points. 20 Japanese planes were destroyed on ground by cruisers shells (range 20). Bombardment cause light damage to AF.

50 P-38 swept Truk at 28th. 11 P-38 lost to 8 N1K1-J.
40 P-40 swept Turk at 29th . 7 P-38 lost to 9 N1K1-J.
B-24 raid at 29h was complete success. His fighters were flaying at 40k Alt and they missed 100 B-24 at 9k alt.
Airfield is closed now and 50 Japanese planes were destroyed on ground, including 20 Gorges and 26 Frances.

I am planing to continue this kind of attacks till landing day. Truk Naval Fortress is taking 100% loses from shore bombardments, it seems to me that I can disable it before 5th Fleet will show up.

Those Turks must have been amazed at Allied pilots swapping Tomahawks for Lightnings in mid-flight!

30th Nov - 7th Dec 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

5th USAAF is continuing destruction of Palembang and Djambi.

110th IJA Division has surrender at Bandoeng. This was the last Japanese organized resistance on island, now whole Java is in Allies hands.

What to do now with 6th US Army ??? Jump on Borneo ?, Sumatra ? or withdraw it back to central pacific.

South Pacific HQ
:

Gasmata captured by USMC Paratroopers. Port Moresby captured by 4th AUS Division and 14th NZ Brigade.

RADM Smith (5xCA, 8xDD) and RADM Lee Willis (7xCL, 10xDD) continued raids against Truk during this week.
Losses are: 1 US CA torpedoed by sub and several Japanese subs were sunk or damaged. Over 100 mines were destroyed
there by my minesweepers at very high cost, 4xYMS and 3xAM.

B-24 & P-38 form Kavieng are visiting Truk every day. AF is closed all time.

5th Fleet was discovered by enemy subs south of Wake Island. Sub was sunk by escort, but he reported to Tokyo my BBs and APAs. Invasion fleet is still 1000 miles from destination doing 120 miles / day.

11th Dec 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

3 USMC squadrons (F4U) swept Djambi. Next base was visited by 250 B-24. However airfield seems to be still open (74 dmg).

16 British Spitfires trapped 10 Franks over Oosthaven. All K-84 were destroyed.

120 B-25 closed Billiton airfield.

Total losses today: 29 N1K1-J, 20 Ki-84a, 8 Ki-84r !!new model online!! for 24 F4U and 8 B-24.

South Pacific HQ:

20 K-48-IIb tried sneak over allied convoy at Port Moresby. 16 Australian Kittyhawks scored 17 of enemy bombers.

160 B-25 closed Rabaul AF.

5th Fleet 80 miles from Truk. Landing tomorrow with support 5 BB, 10 CA, 20 DD, 5 DMS. Ground air support will be provided by 600 bombers for carriers. It seems to me that Martin send all his subs to defend base. US warships reported sinking 12 of them and 7 more damaged during last week. Still ~6 is reported by search planes.

12th Dec 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ
:

35th and 475th FG(P-47) swept Samarinda. 10 P-47 lost for 27 N1K1-J and Ki-84a.
B-24 and F6F are continuing friendly visits over sky of Djambi.

South Pacific HQ:

B-25 continue bombing Rabaul (100dmg).
Heavy bombers from Kavieng raided Aitape level 4 AF (57dmg).
Paratroopers captured Buka. Now whole Salomon Islands Archipelago is in hand of Allies.

Central Pacific HQ: Truk landing operation.

As suspected it did not go to well. Firstly heavy cruisers and battleships failed silence Truk Naval Fortress guns. Area is infested with over 30 Japanese subs and hundreds mines. Landing forces manage clear path throu minefields and unload 90% of my forces but at very high cost. 6 DMS sunk, several battleships, cruisers, destroyers are damaged and are force to look for shipyard. I have 15 ARD and 5 AR ships in Kavieng, so most of ships can be fixed there. A few however will need sail back to PH or Sydney.

Carriers bombed Truk airfield (97dmg), B-24 were busy at Aitape today.
2 or 3 enemy subs were sunk today. Reports shows over 30 hit sub by 500lbs today, however sea around landing side is still red :(.

13th Dec 1943. This is good day at all :(

Oil centers destroyed:
- Palembang 891
- Balikpapan 272
- Djambi 249
- Samarinda 56
- Lanchow 0
- Java Oil captured 225
-----------------------
total lost count: 1723 !!!!!!!!!!!!

Southwest Pacific HQ:

B-24 and F6F are continuing friendly visits over sky of Djambi.

53rd (Sep) Regiment landed at Bandjermasin.

South Pacific HQ:

B-25 continue bombing Rabaul (100dmg).

Heavy bombers from Kavieng raided again Aitape AF (97dmg).

147th (Sep) Regiment landed at Hollandia. Air cover 4 Squadrons USMC(3 x F4U, 1 x F6F) was placed to high and most of Martins torpedo armed H8K2 raid sunk one xAP, 2nd xAP and CL Richmond were damaged by a few G3M3 all operation on 3000-4000ft altitude.

Central Pacific HQ: Truk landing operation. Operation code name "Disaster" day 2.

15 P1Y1 from Guam tried night raid against my transports at Truk. They were intercepted by 4 F4U-2 from VF(N)-75.
One was shoot down by night fighters and 8 other were damaged by flak.

Second day is not better. I have forgot to cancel unloading order and my transport not only did not sail out but they finished unloading under heavy fire form coastal guns. CA Portland and Wichita are damaged plus 7 DD and 4 LST. Additionally one LST ship sunk during afternoon phase.
However now I have all units(1st & 2nd USMC Div, 2 Tanks Bn, 2 Arty Bn) and 45K supplies on ground.

Martin spammed 9 MTB, it is not good idea in my opinion, he should not waste supplies now. All of MBT were sunk by my oldBB. Next my oldBBs fired at base defenses with very limited results.

Well that's not really that high of a cost considering the value of Truk. As you say you have plenty of support at Kavieng so you wont lose anything bigger than a destroyer. You're also lucky I think that the fire was concentrated on your surface navy rather than your LSTs; enough LSTs hit could have caused a disaster on the ground which you seem to have avoided.

How come there wasn't a shock attack at Truk? I'm still a bit concerned that you will be able to take Truk quickly as your superiority on the ground is marginal given the fort levels.

100% on land in good shape. It seems to me that this battle will be very long. I have just watched a new Combat report, fort lvl 7, this can explain why my shore bombardments are not effective.

Why it should be ? Truk is not Atoll.
I have feeling that I will need land with 2nd wave, however I will at first unload 2nd wave units from xAPs and load those units on APAs in Kavieng.

I was unaware it wasn't an in-game atoll because IRL I think it is. But really I don't see why it shouldn't be an atoll...perhaps the devs decided it was too big to be one even if people still refer to it as an atoll.

And I agree you probably need a second wave if there are level 7 forts. Unfortunately Truk is a very bad place to get mirred; landing supplies in the interim will be expensive. In particular you should bring a lot of artillery here since over time those bombardments will add up (especially with lower forts). At this point you can probably get away with landing lower prepped units to get more guys here sooner. But ideally you should land a big second wave all at once...the more waves you have the more ship casualties you will take.

14th Dec 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

53rd (Sep) Regiment landing at Bandjermasin is completed. Heavy disruption and fatigue it need rest week before attack.

South Pacific HQ:

B-25 continue bombing Rabaul (95dmg).

147th (Sep) Regiment unloaded at Hollandia attack tomorrow. This time air cover 5 Squadrons USMC(3 x F4U, 2 x F6F) was placed on correct altitude. 11 G3M3 down without losses on Allied side.

Central Pacific HQ: Truk landing operation. Operation code name "Disaster" day 3.

Carriers are performing ASW action around Truk.

Marines attacked base. Fort level 7 !!!!. Very bad dice roll, no fort reduction :(
However main Japan LCU, 59th Div AV has drooped to 200 points.
I will bring two more USMC Divisions and 4 - 5 Arty units anyway.

Southeast Asia HQ:

Spidery is evacuation Burma. My units are slowly following without fighting. Shwebo has been captured without resistance today. Myitkyina was captured yesterday.
Plan is that 1st and 2nd Australian Corps are going to follow him to Thailand when 14th Army with all British units will advance towards China.

Remember that "in-game" carries many things with it. In AE atoll is a terrain type, like forest, mountain, etc. and it carries with it a mandatory shock attack upon landing. So what the scenario designer assigned it is based on trying to have the game behave in a manner faithful to what is really there at Truk, which is not a typical atoll in the sense that the game terrain type 'atoll' was designed to represent.

In so many words, your assumption about why they didn't make it an atoll in-game are correct AFAIK.

I'm surprised you didn't allocate an HQ for the Truk operation. I'm not sure exactly the magnitude of the HQ bonuses you could have received but certainly it would have been beneficial for this battle which may stretch on for weeks if not months.

IIRC, very, very rarely have a I seen it noted in a combat report. Due to the results I've seen, I do believe/strongly suspect that they often get applied without being duly noted in the accompanying combat report.
