This is a short Youtube series covering the Fighter Weapons School GAT 5/6 scenario that comes with Command. I have 8 F-4E Phantoms up against some F-5s and an SA-3 site. This is a great scenario to start with and there are many, many ways to execute the mission. Video 1 outlines my plan and we will have to see how it goes from here.

Cool stuff! That was the very first scenario I played when I got into the Command Closed Beta originally. Screw tutorials
Nice to see different tactical approaches to the same scenario.

I was also thinking about recommending you look at one of my own scenarios but I see it is not needed

Looking forward to see how you tackle Red Flag, hope it goes well

Hey, thanks a lot for putting this together! It is a deceptively simple problem with about 100 different ways of executing it. Hopefully this way works.

Thanks Tomcat84. Your scenarios are what got me hooked on this again. My first try at Red Flag 2017 a couple weeks ago cost Uncle Sam about 3 Billion worth of 5th gen fighters in the first 45 minutes so I figured I had better back off and learn the game before really tackling it. I've been obsessed with developing a good plan ever since. Actually, the Frisian Flag scenario is probably the next one i will record.

The Shamal, Desert Storm scenario looks interesting. Apart from yours, are there any other air warfare "diamonds in the rough" you would recommend?

I'm usually a lurker on this stuff, but I liked your approach on the project and look forward to more. Try to be more careful with our fifth-gen assets when you do 2017. Those things are expensive!

Keep up the good work and keep posting.

I forgot to mention two things:
- I really liked you using the drawing thing to illustrate your plan etc. very nice.
- I also thought it was nice that you loaded my overlays, however with the relief layer they look kind of odd. I understand you using the layer but maybe you could show what it looks like without it for players who may be unfamiliar with command. (Apologies if you already did this in the first part and I missed it, I did skip a few bits)

As for the rest, I'm glad to hear my scenarios got you going again! Indeed Frisian flag might be a nice stepping stone because RF can be quite difficult to keep under control. Did you also see my DCA Mini-Ex? It's my simplest scenario, purely air to air. If you haven't seen it you can find it through the link in my sig.

As for other people's scens, I spend most of my time tinkering with my own or beta testing things so it's hard to give an honest opinion. There aren't many purely air to air I think, many do involve some kind of naval element, but things that come to mind are Comao training transport day and DACEX 14 by Blas de Lezo (though you may have to wait for latest version of community scen pack to get up to date versions, should be released soon), Operation Brass Drum, The Fighter Bomber regiment, operation fei Lian, precise hotel, Goodnight Irene, operation lightning strike, Play the fool, lawful avenger, raid on bir moghrein, the big stick (though I'm not sure if that one was ever really finished) and I think there's a couple more that escape me (doing this off top if my head, sorry to anyone I missed). Many of these not pure air combat but also ships/cruise missiles etc. and also there's many more scens that I've simply never been able to look at.

Part 2 is up at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_pg_V3Elok

Lots of lessons learned looking back on this one... Setting Reno 2 to "weapons hold" would have been the thing to do if I did not intend for them to engage. I assumed (wrongly!) that leaving their radar off would have the same function.

I could have also made better use of "ignore plotted course when attacking" function to ensure the F-4s maintained radar lock throughout the AIM-7 flight time. I was very conscious of the requirement to maintain lock but still let a few get away from me due to Reno 1 circling at the end of their plotted route.

More to come!

Thanks again. I left the relief layer off for the rest of it. You're right, it did look kind of odd.

Thanks for the suggestions and I think I will do your DCA Mini-Ex next. There are still a lot of "gotchas" in the mission settings I need to work through and make sure I fully understand before showing anything too complex.

Love the videos - I'm noticing sometimes even when "ignore plotted course when attacking". AI will fire off missiles and still look to stay on course and lose enemy contact when using semi-active (thus missing target).

Watched parts 2 through 4 today. Got pretty hairy there. Looking forward to the conclusion so low on AIM-7s, and to see how that Goa treats you.

One thing I noticed in part 2 I believe is that you were individually setting the groups' sparrow WRA to 30nm max. If that's a number you want for (almost) all your sparrow equipped planes, don't forget you can set it in the side doctrine window (ctrl-shift-f9 I believe) so that they all inherit that setting. Then you can tweak it on a per mission/flight basis if needed.

Also don't forget that you can see distance from currently selected unit to wherever your mouse is in the bottom left data box

Keep up the nice work!

I experienced the same. However, I don't remember getting a message that a missile went ballistic after running blind for to long, even though it was some degrees outside of the displayed radar cone. Is there something I'm missing with the modeling of the radar cone (tilting)?

I ended up micromanaging everything which worked well, but that's not really an option for lager missions.

The visible radar cone is the search arc. The illumination arc is usually plus a few degrees on either side, which is why you see illumination beams going out of the search cone.

Watched Part 5 today - wow is it getting close!

Can't wait to see Part 6. Then I fully intend to try your tactics and see how it goes on my own. This is a bear of a scenario.

I hope you keep doing Command videos after this series - your delivery and focus on the details is great. Keep up the great work!

Great advice! I really need to put a "sticky" on my monitor with a list of interface options to check and set before I really get things started. Once I start the narration, all bets are off on what I will manage to remember.

Great tip about the data box! I had forgotten all about it being there.

Ok, all six parts are up. Thanks a lot to everybody who checked them out!

(Sorry Sunburn, I still can't do direct links for a few more days...)

One other option that occurred to me is to stand-off with my SEAD flight and do some traditional "weaseling", drawing the SA-3's fire and ducking under cover until they need to re-load. Come to think of it, the terrain is perfect for that. Endless possibilities...

Hey BunyapSims,

Just watched Part 6 - that last Phantom loss...9% final chance and the computer rolls a 1...amazing!

Great series and I'm looking forward to the next one. Off to play this one myself!

Good job!!! Even though the mission was a bugger, your AAR and the way you presented it really showed the power and flexibility of this fine sim/game we play. Can't wait to see more of them.
