Summary of Operations 5/26/44 Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 965K, fuel 67K. Current status of Terapo base – 26K supply on hand. No reported ground combat or air activity this game turn in the Terapo bridgehead area. Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea. Japanese planes reported destroyed • 24 Ki-84 Frank (13 air-to-air, 4 ops, 7 on the ground) • 25 N1K1-J George (15 air-to-air, 2 ops, 8 on the ground) • 9 N1K1 Rex (5 air-to-air, 3 on the ground, 1 ops) • 7 D3A2 Val (all air-to-air) • 2 P1Y1 Frances (both on the ground) • 3 J1N1-S Irving (2 on the ground, 1 ops) • 3 H8K1 Emily (all air-to-air) Allied planes reported destroyed • 20 P-47D Thunderbolt (19 air-to-air, 1 ops) • 8 P-39D Airacobra (2 flak, 6 ops) • 5 B-25D1 Mitchell (all air-to-air) • 5 A-20G Havoc (3 flak, 2 ops) Unplanned fighter vs fighter combat over adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna. The action was unplanned in that it occurred over a hex location other than Buna. USAAF fighter squadrons (based in Port Moresby) had been targeted on Buna base hex and set to fly CAP mission at range = 2. Given the hex location of this action, it appears as if the US CAP fighters re-targeted themselves to the adjacent hex NW of Buna rather than flying CAP over Buna itself. Several game questions at play here… • When assigning fighters to a CAP mission at range = 2 and also assigning a target hex location (Buna) to the air unit, CAP fighters in the air unit appear to engage enemy planes in any hex within the assigned (2 hex) range, AE basically overriding the air unit’s assigned target hex location and diverting CAP fighters to the other hex under this situation. If true, assigning a target hex to fighters on a CAP mission does not guarantee the planes will go to the air unit’s set target hex when other air combat “opportunities” appear within the range value set for the air unit. • Assuming the previous theory is true, is assigning fighters to LRCAP rather than CAP mission the correct action? (i.e. fighters assigned to LRCAP over an assigned target hex go specifically to that hex and not elsewhere) Given the rather small number of P-47’s compared to Japanese fighters in the AAR below, the result is not too bad despite the temporary inconvenience from an Allied perspective. The discussion above intended more as an instructional exercise rather than venting. A quick glance at the game manual did not produce an immediate answer. AAR’s follow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on 2/3rd Ind Coy, at 99,128, near Buna Weather in hex: Severe storms Raid spotted at 35 NM, estimated altitude 22,000 feet.
