I bought WitP the day it came out. Played religiously for 3 years. Dropped it for a bit then came back a couple years later. Dropped it again. Bought WitP:AE when it came out and did the same, only stopped playing sometime in 2011.

After all this time, I've never finished a game. I apologize for any PBEM opponents that I've left hanging.

But . . . here I am again playing some more. Starting a new campaign against the AI.

Why do I do this to myself? The UI sucks. All the data mining you need to play requires external apps. Many things are downright tedious, and each day I've forgotten what I did the turn before.

Do I need psychological help?

AE can be played with zero add ons.  All the relevant and necessary data to play it is available in game and without too much effort for its extraction.

I just shake my head every time someone states that 3rd party add ons are a must have to play AE and to access the data.  What usually results from this approach is an unhealthy reliance on others and a commensurate reduction in independent understanding of the issues raised in a game of AE.

Yes. If you will excuse me now, I need to go to my hexagonally shaped toilet labelled 78,77.

If you do, you wouldn't be the only one here. I've had a not unequal relation with Silent Hunter. I don't know about this (WitP) game yet, so far I'm just
studying it. The SH game also has a terrific community that has developed a lot of improvements for the game. That game needs to have those installed for max
player satisfaction.

Now I am switching to Silent Hunter IV - the PTO version. That one has its own, specific, modifications, not necessarily compatible with III..... I am planning
to use them in parallell for a book project I'm working on.

I'm presently trying to break from of that initial "Argh this is painful" relearning/accommodation period. I find myself dozing off about half the time I try to play the Dec 8 turn!

Still, I have my industry and bases set up (most of them) and Philippines troops, ships and planes setup.

I recall from past periods of playing it, once you get turn one set up and start actually playing it becomes more absorbing than tedious.

Same here. It pains me every time I try to remember what does this mean or that mean again. All the things I used to know.

By the way, can someone please remind me what the orange and green numbers on the group pilot roster mean?

Thanks

Like Alfred says; and what you should know from your experience from the past, what you see is what you get. You have been told that for many years. Do you think you can just jump into a 21st century thread as though you were a tyro? You spent years doing the same nonsense, when the game was released in the old days. You had the same "I dunno but things don't work as I want, and I don't know how to make them happen" issues as you are have now'

We remember you., and will act accordingly.

So here is a simple question for you old crusty, curmudgeonly, WiTP grog vets: it is Dec 8, 1941. Any idea why can I not change my USAFFE(R) units to some other command? Whereas, I CAN change my KNIL Army Command(R)?

My guess is that, because KNIL is subordinate to ABDA (which is unrestricted) I can change those. But since USAFFE is not subordinate to any other command, I cannot change those?

Is there something I can do or some point in the future where I can change USAFFE units another command?

I've been skimming around the manual and forums for about an hour trying to pin that one down. Not too bad, given I had completely forgotten about the whole "Restricted" commands thing and that sent me for a loop for several hours.

I did the transition but in reverse; I started with both SHIII and SHIV. I think if you have the patience for playing these games at 100% realism (meaning= manual targeting and no god's eye view), you should try WITP-AE. If it catch you, then there is no turning back

If the text of the HQ for a unit is in yellow, it can be changed if you have enough PP. If the text is in white, it can not be changed. Why = because the scenario maker made it that way.

Is that what you are asking?

Ah thanks Witpqs. Had no idea that some units just simply can never be changed, this is the stock "Ironman" scenario with no mods. Must have over looked that in my Ctrl-F skimming of the manual.

Numbers in orange mean that the number changed in the past month. Numbers in green mean that the number changed the last turn.

Slight correction: orange = during present calendar month.

I've noticed that using the -altFont switch, a lot of these colors just render white. Suppose there would be any way for me to monkey around with settings and get it to render in color like the default font?

Ah I bet it is one of the color settings I'm using then. I'll try with those turned off, thanks.

Hi Crimguy,

I agree wholeheartedly with Alfred. One does not need the myriad add-ons to play this game effectively. Japanese industry can be managed by Kentucky windage, common sense and a little bit of patience. Drop me a line if you're interested in details and what information I glean from where.

Welcome back. As one of those PBEMs opponents that you dropped back in the day (you were my first PBEM in WiTP:AE for what it's worth), I can assure you there are no hard feelings. This game is a harsh mistress and extremely demanding. I can understand why some back out of it.

If you're willing to learn the game system and haunt the forums, you are in for a real treat. The engine has gotten even better and is more stable and playable than ever. Stick around for a bit.
