I'm interested in this game. I own many Matrix games.

I LOVE Panzer Corps, Battle Academy, Unity of Command, Conflict of Heroes, Heroes of Stalingrad, Commander the Great War, and Scourge of War.

I wanted to love the Decisive Campaign series games but didn't. Too much time pushing counters around the map. I want to love Civil War II and can't quite get into it. Haven't totally given up on it though.

I do like Operational Art of War III, but tend to play the smaller shorter scenarios, not the massive ones.

As you can see I like the lighter, quick fix games a lot better. I like to settle down and play a scenario in a couple hours. That said I wouldn't mind giving this a whirl. I did read somewhere that someone completed a turn in less than 10 minutes. I could to that.

I know it's SUPER deep but is it easy enough to get into and play? I don't mind starting a game that takes a long time to play, but I'm must not sure I want to manage so much minutia and spend an hour on a single turn.

Here's a link to some youtube videos that may give you a better idea. The first of the links are the tutorials that come with the game and walk you through the first few turns of Operation Husky, an introduce the air war and logistics.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3752166

(edited to provide the link I completely forgot)

The game is deep. If you are playing a shorter scenario, the turns go faster - just lots less to manage. The campaign turns *can* take a while each, but sometimes they too go quickly if there isn't much going on (preparing for invasions without much land combat).

The air portion can take a large amount of time. However, you can automate part or even all of it if you want to.

There is a tremendous amount of detail available, but it's not necessary to get into every tiny detail or stat all the time.

Hope that helps. I recommend the videos to help you get a better idea.

I would bet the context of that statement was a time period that involved little going on (e.g. As the German player in the '43 campaign after Sicily you've probably already stationed your aircraft and units where you want and you're just waiting for the next Allied shoe to drop, but I wouldn't want anyone to buy the game expecting that was a typical turn).

There is a lot of a minutiae you can hand off to the AI (automatic air directive creation, even automatic rebasing of aircraft, automatic handling of sub-units (offmap units like battalions and regiments that are either attached to HQs or on-map units), but not taking the reins on those things would put you at a disadvantage if you were interested in pvp (and by that may not matter to you at all).

I would put this game on the upper end of the 'grognard' scale. You might have some fun with some of the smaller scenarios, but the list price is pretty steep for just those.

Play style is going to make a difference too. I play slow just because I like to mull over things. When I get a turn back from an opponent I usually open it up, look over the map, then save it and close it to let my mind digest what opportunities have arisen, or disappeared, and formulate a response in the background of my mind while I'm doing other (less interesting) things. Then I'll fire the turn back up when I'm free and see what I can apply.

Does it ever go on sale? I'd try it for 50 buck but not 80...

Well, I bit the bullet and got it. Watched a few tutorials and completed Husky successfully. On Breakthrough scenario now.

Really impressive game! I'll probably have the AI handle air until I get the hang of the game, but pretty intuitive interface. Extremely deep but easy enough to get into.
