I've heard about distant worlds several times and it sounds like something I'd like. When I've looked before the price always seemed rather high to take a chance on a game or developer I'd never tried. Often with an impending expansion pack, which seem to be considered essential buys, to further add to the cost. Yesterday I saw there was an easter discount and the game was available as a complete package so I got my calculator out, tap tap tap, and worked out that the price was £30. A little on the high side perhaps, but a price I'd definitely consider paying. So I checked out the reviews of the universe version, skipped through a few bits of gameplay footage and decided that it looked promising enough to be worth the money. Added it to basket, applied the voucher... Wait, what? £36? They're showing the price in pounds, they've even set a price in pounds (.99p ending) but they're not following normal UK pricing practice by showing the price including VAT? Grumble, grumble, grumble. Well, I suppose it's only £6 more. So I get on with the checkout process, fill stuff in. tap, tap, tap, hmmm... Why am I entering personal details before I've created an account? How am I going to download the game in future? Look in the Store FAQ. Nothing there. Go to the store front page, "The download is available to you for thirty days after your order". Forget that then, this isn't 2001 anymore. Hmm, so how much extra is the boxed version? Base price, plus 20% VAT, minus 30% discount... £45. Sod that, I'm not paying 50% more without reconsidering it. When does the voucher end? 'on the 7th.' That's a bit ambiguous. I'll have a think about it tomorrow if it's still running. Note to self: Check where these are dispatched from to make sure there's no customs charges on top of that. As the news post disappeared today I'm guessing the voucher has expired. So that's how I almost bought distant worlds. I could have redeemed the steam key to be able to redownload in future but I prefer not to use steam. I'm not keen on Valve's advertising model of a storefront on every computer. I notice it's also available directly through the steam storefront now though. I had a look in my usual favoured game store (Gamersgate) and a couple of others but I couldn't see it on those. Can anyone suggest somewhere that sells Distant Worlds Universe as a simple installer or at least uses a storefront/advert-free client to install it?
