New one for folks to try out:

09 April 2015

Backed by Russia, Belarus has invaded Poland’s eastern provinces in force. Armored units with heavy artillery and infantry support crossed the border before dawn yesterday and appear to be driving on Bialystok and Lublin. Airmobile units, possibly Russian, have taken several bridge crossings. While the assault was expected Polish and NATO intelligence did not anticipate it for another 4-6 days. Polish forces have given ground but they are expected to be able to hold the line while NATO brings sufficient air and ground forces to bear to eliminate the incursion.

It is expected that further Russian forces will be brought into action when the Belarus Army’s offensive stalls. The USAF 555th Fighter Squadron (555 FS, 24 F-16C) and the Polish 40th Tactical Squadron (40.ELT, 24 Su-22M4) have been tasked to strike key logistic and support sites in Belarus to complicate enemy reinforcement efforts. They will be supported by a NATO E-3 Sentry and four EA-18Gs from the US Navy’s VAQ-139. Your task is to provide air cover for the operation using the 18 Typhoon FGR.4s of 1 Sqdn RAF. Enemy air activity is expected to be heavy; ground defenses are not a factor.

Units: ~130 total; 18 aircraft in player control
Scenario Time: 3 hours

Designers Note: This scenario started as a way to test the effectiveness of various fighters using an offensive fighter sweep mission; hence the lack of ground defenses. I built the targets, the strikes, and the defenders and realized I had about 90% of a releasable scenario… why not put it out there?

I wanted the Sentry and the Growlers close enough to cover action in the Minsk area.... in the face of Russian jamming. Much further away and they wouldn't be very effective.

What were your general tactics, did you set the Tiffies on patrol missions and let it play out?

Oof.... I played it through, got a 30ish point Minor Victory. And I knew what was coming!

I put one pair of Typhoons on CAP tired to the AEW orbit, then launched six more in pairs, kept then under manual control. Got then to within solid Meteor range of the hostiles, unloaded BVR and ran for home, taking advantage of the Quick Turn and avoiding a knife fight. Then I launched two more pairs to keep things quiet.. I managed to sneak one of those pairs far enough east to whack a jammer, but couldn't get to the Mainstay. To this point I studiously avoided WVR engagement, and had 14-18 kills.

By the time the Growlers and strikes started launching my initial six Typhoons were rearmed and ready to go. I put up twelve fighters (so 96 missiles, not including the AMRAAMs from the F-16s) to cover things, and it JUST WASN'T ENOUGH. I was'nt able to push the fighters far enough east to really cover the deeper strikes. A lot of the Fitters got through, but died on the return leg...pyhrric victory, especially if enemy tanks are still in your country uninvited.

I played two times, both times just setting CAP mission and let it play. I'm not really a fan of micromanagement.

Both times, I adjusted WRA so Meteors are fired at 45 NM, to increase kill probability, and also that air contacts are weapons free, not to loose time to ID targets.

First time, I played the default, use 1/3rd rule and CAP mission starts active. So that my aircraft flied away immediately. This resulted in score 6, average.

Second time, I set the CAP mission with all aircraft in the air (1/3rd to OFF), and waited till the strike started. MIGs will not go after AWACS, so I did not need to cover AWACS and I went with CAP simultaneously with the strike package. That gave me score 27 with notably less allied losses,

9x Typhoon FGR.4 (vs 11)
6x Su-22M-4K Fitter K (vs 12)
2x EA-18G Growler (vs 3)
2x F-16C Blk 52 Falcon (vs 3)
0x AWACS (vs 1).

I tried rearming to have Typhoons loaded with 6x Meteor + 2x ASRAAM, but did not have time to reload. I think that in this kind of engagement, more BVR-ish loadouts would be better, but it is not an option.

Looked to be an unusual scenario and think the balance is right overall.
I ended up using the Typhoon's in one patrol, ran out of Meteor's reasonably rapidly but also got in some ASRAAM' kills.
Ended on a score of 29 for a minor victory.
Nicely worked out.

That was a busy scenario. Minor Victory with 20.
If I would have read the briefing a bit more and grasped reality that I was playing the CAP role and the strike (AI) was eventually going to happen, I may have done better.
The only thing that I could add would be a bit more detailed in the operation such as a time when the strikes were going to occur. By the time the support and attack a/c took off on their missions, I had most of my a/c already Winchester. I think I would have like to have 12 a/c going up about 30 minutes prior to the strikes and the remaining 6 as the strikes occurred. I was too fast, too soon.
Excellent. If this was a Rotten Tomatoes movie review, I'd give 90%.
