In light of some recent postings and other threads, I thought I would try a thread encourging people to post their actuall battles from PBEM games. Can be of any type, any size, as long as you feel that it was a major battle and one you and your foe talked about for a while. :D

I tried to post one of my own eariler but the note never sent, so I'll just open this now and add one of my own later.

Seems like all my PBEM major battles end with me losing a LOT of ships and sinking none. It is too embarassing to post them.

Here's a old AAR I still have on my HD. One of my first PBEM games was with me as the Allies playing Drex as the Japanese. Starting in May 1942, we had something like 12 major naval battles before he finally threw in the towel in late March of 1943.

Attacking Lunga and Tulagi, I ran into heavy Japanese resitance, and several major battles like the one below were fought with my cruisers aganist a superior Japanese force:

In the end, though, I somehow kept a surface fleet off of Lunga, and drove the Japanese forces back in defeat. Kongo sank from her bomb hits about a game week later and I'm pretty sure (if memory serves me) that several of those Japanese cruisers never made it home either. Pensacola sank to her damage and Salt Lake City was also torpedoed, but I held the base. Never DID get any of those heavy cruisers returned to me, though (they ALL had to go back to Pearl by the time Operation Watchtower was finished).

Not good. South Dakota and Tennessee sank right after the battle, and Idaho and Helena the next day. Maryland and Colorado made it back to Lunga, and Indiana was heavily damaged in another surface battle soon after. On the Japanese side, besides Mutsu, Yamato was also crippled and went back to Japan. Still, Drex now had three BB's to my one, and it took a rag-tag force of the Witchata, several CLAA's, and DD's to defend Munda from those three BB's a game week later. I lost several CLAA's and the CA but two out of three of his BB's had to go back to Japan after that. Shortly after that, my two new BB's and other ships showed up and started to shell Shortland, along with air poundings from Munda, and Drex admitted defeat.

And now, from that same game, I'll go from my worst battle to my best. :D

In November, 1942, after the southern Solomons had been mine for a few months but was under constant presure from the Japanese, I lost the use of one of my two BB's -- North Carolina had been crippled by two Jap torpedo hits. It took Drex some time, but he finally came down the slot full force to crush my fleet at Lunga. First, though, he ran into my PT boats, which got a torpedo hit into the Musashi and forced her back, leaving the Yamato and three BB's aganist only the Washington and some lights.

I expected it to be a tough fight. Yes, I had several things going for me -- a lot of experience (the Washington alone has seen more surface combat then any of the Japanese ships), a good commander, more ships then the Japanese, and a later date (December 1st 1942). Plus all my ships were fully healthy.

During the night, his fleet engaged mine, my saving grace, I thought, being that radar detcted the Japanese first and the Washington opened fire to start things off.

Even I was surprised at the results, however:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Lunga at 38,40

DD Hibiki, Shell hits 21, on fire, heavy damage
DD Uranami, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hatakaze, Shell hits 18, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
BB Washington, Shell hits 5, on fire
CL Leander, Shell hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
CLAA Atlanta, Shell hits 1
CLAA Juneau, Shell hits 9
CLAA San Diego, Shell hits 4, on fire

All I can say is WHOA! Make that guy a Admiral, because he just saved the whole war! And the battle was fought at the incredable ranges of 2000-6000 yards!

Needless to say, Drex ain't a happy camper. He complained how three out of four of his BB's now have to return to Japan, with perhaps other ships. A third DD sank right after the battle.

Damage on my side? The Washington did get pasted, but American BB's are tougher then their Japanese counterparts -- I would send her back to Noumea and Pearl if I did'nt need the ship to stay on station so badly! Those are the ONLY ships I have. Two CL's and two CLAA's got crippled and will have to return to Pearl.

Bad weather scribbed my morning air strikes from Lunga and by the afternoon they were out of range, hence, Drex was saved from a total defeat.

My subs made sure Nagato never saw port, though. The crippled BB had a small escort and two seperate attacks on two seperate days with two seperate hits finally finished off a BB. Washington had something like Sys damage in the 20's but she saw more heavy fighting before new BB's finally came and she went back to Pearl (in January 1943) with Sys damage at 50. That's ONE tough SOB ship! :)
Swine! I was drinking a coffee when I read the above post, I laughed so hard coffee came out of my nose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad I could make you laugh, I wasn't at the time ... Thats when I learned about the TF follow command, to keep the CV's from doing the 2 step. I had the thing wired the wrong way with the other guys following the CV's, zooming ships up from Noumea to block the landing at Lunga & Tulagi.

Not only did the both CV's die, but the following turn the rest of my ships going creamed by his CV's that now had 0 air cover :(

Out of the whole group of starting ships at Noumea, I think 2 DD's made it back to port.

I think if you go back months, you can still find my bitching thread in the Bugs section about stupid CV's :D

I doublt there is anyone who did not at least once have their CV's trashed by having their fighters on LRCAP and stepping out from under their own fighters.

Couple of things before I post my battle - my CR is long forgotten.

1st. Raver's invasion of Truk isn't in his game against me (disclaimer disclaimer etc. etc.).

2nd. We've all had those nice damaged CVs put up in front of our big IJN guns - nothing quite like it, is there Raver ;) ?

3rd. Adm. Arctic has pulled off possibly his 6th or 7th mid ocean intercept against me this game. So far his surface fleet has used their deadly mid ocean intercept maths formulas to sink maybe 30 transports, a CVE, 2 tankers, uncountable SCs and DDs, and has badly damaged 2 CVEs, and slightly damaged almost every ship in the allied arsenal (Yamato got a single 6.1 inch shell hit that has just put the Essex out of action for the game in the last one).

The mid ocean intercept stuff is really, really frightening. Especially when I don't leave my ships sitting still anywhere, and never move in straight lines etc.

Ok, onto the battle - the names of all ships invovled are probably wrong. Just as long as you understand that it was 3 old, slow USN BBs raised from the bottom of Pearl Harbour.

To set the scene it is late Feb 43 or so in an IJN winning scenario 17 and I'm the allies. I lost PNG and the Solomons early - during the fighting I sank the Zuikaku, and lost Enterprise, Hornet and another big CV (Lex I think) early, although I put the Akagi back to Tokyo for almost the rest of the game and Shoho damaged. Then there were a series of pitched battles, between my CVs, Luganville, and my surface fleet and Adm Arctic's CVs (all still in pristine condition and it is now June 43 . . .) and his BB armada. I got lucky, and sent 4 or 5 BBs to the ocean floor after a month or so of constant bombardment/surface force engagements.

After a brief rest, I land troops at Irau in order to start my drive back up the Solomons - but AA is fortified to his teeth there, and mined to the heavens. His troops were not strong enough to eject mine, but easily supplied and defended enough to hold on without any real losses - and exhausting my troops.

So a massive siege battle of attrition begins, with both sides occaisionally using CVs to lend air power to the fast transports and transport groups that go in and out of Irau every night and day. I reingofrce, he reinforces, I supply, he supplies etc. etc.

His only (at the time) big BB is the Fuso (or Ise??? one of the two) and after several succesful engagements, he drowns almost 500 army points worth of marines and tanks (the knock out blow) off Irau. The sharks had a feast. But all of my sunk DD s and APs have taken a toll on his DDs (escorts and those doing FT) and so the stage was set for the first pure BB battle to proceed.

His forces: BB Fuso (pretty sure Ise is still giving me headaches).
Me: Two damaged DDs, and 3 BBs, The New Mexico, the Indiana, and the Nevada (old ones, can't remember if it was these three exactly). My DDs didn't engage and the battlewagons closed to 5000 yards for the duel.

Those surface combat replays go a long time and this one had me glued to my monitor for over half an hour as unbelievably, the Fuso gets opening round honours with 14 or 16 inch hits on ALL three of my BBs, and half a dozen smaller hits on each ship (wrote the destroyers off).

Lee, aboard Nevada, brought the USN ships into 2000 yards with the IJN giant and the New Mexico got slugged with another nasty big shell hit for her troubles which pretty much finished her, as well as the IJN AA armament getting fifty hits on each BB. However at this range even my inexperienced crews couldn't miss, and they landed about 50 real shell hits and 200+ AA hits on the Fuso, which rolled over and sank.

This marked the end of Adm. Arctic's control of the waters around Irau and lead to my eventual resupply/reinforcement FT groups getting through unmolested to help me take Irau. On the up side, I took Irau, and sank a BB. On the down side, the day after the crippled New Mexico was caught limping home and was sunk by an IJN sub, while the two damaged BBs were also attacked a turn later by a sub which torpedoed the Indiana. Fortunately the Indiana and Nevada made it to Noumea at about 55 sys damage each and were sent home.

Best battle I've had in any game so far I think.

Notes from Mogami:
Yike it keeps getting worse. Wish Lexington had stayed put in Townsville rather then reacting one hex. (she was in range without the react) Well I'm pretty much crushed. Going to take at least a year to recover from this. I think this might be the fastest turn around I've ever seen. But it proves it's possible and a person should not give up as long as they have forces to fight with. Guess I should have ran when I had the chance but i really thought i would win any carrier battle.

My worse defeat was against Luskan, when playing as IJN I tried and failed to take Townsville. The complete AAR is in the AAR Thread under the topic "An Aussie affair", as so I will not re-post.
But I will give you an outline of what happened.
60,000 troops were loaded onto 10 TFs of around 10 ships each, this was just about all of the IJN AP/AK at the time, the IJN CVs were in 3 TFs of 3 CVs each anlong with a number of surface TFs that also held every combat ship in the area.

The first fatal mistake in the plan was not to take any MSW ships, knowing how poor the allied ML ability is I judged that MSWs would only slow down the fleet......turns out that Luskan had mined the crap out of the east coast of Australia.

Mistake #2, remmember those 10 TFs packed with troops? well they were all set of "retire allowed" and promptly scattered to the every point on the compass rose as soon as Luskans CV steamed north. This had the effect of speading my CAP so thin that even a French bomber could have gotten through, and delaying the invasion by one or two days while I rounded them all up, during this time the enemy were flying in more and more aircraft, and starting to have a field day with the "target rich" enviroment.

Mistake #3 I had my CVs divided up into too many small TFs trying to do too many things at once. The hope was that by dividing up the CVs into many TFs then it would water down any attacks. Not a bad theory, so long as one does not have land based aircraft to worry about as well.

Mistake #4 Luskan's fleet was still intact (as was mine). I should have made better efforts to engage his CV and surface fleets before committing to an invasion.

All in all this was a very sobbering lesson.

:(

What a dogfight!

Here is a massive surface battle at Irau in a PBEM game that is still ongoing.

It was a bad turn in that I was losing my expedition to Irau, but my opponent was covering the area with CVs.

So I slipped 2 US cruiser based surface TFs under Scott and Callghan to wreak havoc, which they did.

Hey that is a fan-bloody-tasic result for the Allies in a night time surface battle ! Even more so when you look at the date 14/7/42! Those of you whom have been on the receiving end of IJN night attacks will know what I am talking about.;)

I think that leadership makes a significant diference. Particarly if you use TF commanders with higher surface combat ratings.

And aggressive skippers will press the attack more, and continue to attempt to engage while they still have ammo.
