OK, here is the same pic with known unit and (rounded) troop counts added. the Empire is definitely on the run, but they are scrambling to plug those holes pretty effectively. I am aiming to send forces to more holes than they can plug, and exploit the leaks.

Things seem to go rather well.

River crossing into Rahaeng... what are your forces like?

Also, do you have a tentative timeline for transforming Cam Ranh Bay into a self-sufficient threat for the KB, and so freeing up your carriers? Or still too early to tell with all the ground forces landing?

Here's hoping that DAW can keep up the pace of the last 3 days :) Daily updates are... delicious.

This is going to be fun to watch!

Are you thinking of forcing the river at Rahaeng soon? Looks like it could be a difficult affair right now. I have always wanted to get this far in SE Asia and see para s play a role.

The crossed swords in the hex west of Rahaeng mean there was a battle there last turn and the lack of IJA forces means they were retreated into Rahaeng. At least some of the troops there are heavily disrupted and perhaps short of supply. The Allies may have fewer troops but in 1944 their firepower (anti-armour rating) is better than the IJA, and much better than the Thai, Viet-minh, and Burmese forces loyal to the Emperor. The attack across the river may not be as difficult as it looks.

OK, below is a pic of our valiant boys heading into Rahaeng.

Here are the units just defeated.
quote:

21st Ind.Mixed Brigade
113th Infantry Regiment
4th RTA Division

About 42,000 troops before the combat/retreat casualties.

Looking at the recon figures above there are 4 units and 23,000 troops at Rahaeng. 3 of those units must be the ones just retreated, so the faster we can get there the better.

Here is our force, with Follow orders. I will switch the stack to Move mode for the last turn of movement (if I time it right!).

If you are close enough on the last turn before crossing, isn't Combat mode better than Move mode? Never been sure if it helps or not.

Yes, that's what I was trying to convey. They are in move mode to cover the distance as fast as possible, then will switch to combat mode for the last day. If there is still some real distance to cover that last day then I will have to take a chance on which mode I use.

Not sure if he can. Remember that the Empire is not fully motorized, so the staff at DAW HQ has to attend to things like cutting hay for the HQ's pack animals.

Again substantial casualties taken out of the withdrawing troops heading to Chiang Mai by air strikes, now including a good number of destroyed squads. The army heading into Rahaeng made 11 miles today in move mode, so with 35 more to go that looks like 3 more days in move mode then 1 day in combat mode. Our armour will attack tomorrow about mid way on the road from Moulmein to Bangkok.

The landing at Soc Trang went in and the base is undefended. The Empire lodged numerous protests from the air - quite vigorously - but only one bomber got to make an attack and missed its AKA target. 2nd Australian Division is ordered to attack tomorrow, but likely the mayor will come to his senses this evening. With that expectation the follow-on forces have been ordered to head straight in for landing. If the town does not capitulate then those units will lose many disabled squads unloading without preparation.

It looks like the IJN repositioned its ASW task forces toward our landing and cover forces at Soc Trang. Does this mean that the IJN will sortie tomorrow? DD Usugumo took a single 1,000 pound SAP bomb hit from one of 8x SBD escorted by 190x fighters. The CVL group (9x CVL), which was on station today 3 hexes SE of Saigon to cover troop convoys, will move to join the CV group 1 hex SE of Soc Trang tomorrow to bolster air power there.

Only 1 Light Industry hit at Soerabaja. Recon shows 13(28).

Here are today's air losses. I'm sure that a number of these were kamikaze.

Here is the situation in the South China Sea. Soc Trang is port size 2 and is undamaged, so it is possible that the convoys with our follow-on forces will be in and out in less time than the Empire anticipates.

Looks like you slipped your sub screen in behind his ASW TFs - sneaky move - I like!

I would never have guessed that Nav Search would spot/ID so many TFs that it basically telegraphs his likely next move! If he doesn't "read the tea leaves" (the DL on his TFs) he might not realize you can guess his plans. Could be a CV clash tomorrow or at least a CV attack (yours) on ASW TFs.

My lead CV group (two TFs) up near Soc Trang is getting very low on sorties, 30s and 40s percent. I'm not really anxious for a CV battle tomorrow, although I feel sure there is plenty of ammo for it. I want to get the troops ashore!

Allied Ships Bombarding Pagan

A massive running battle in the South China Sea! Our battleships shot somewhat poorly, at least in comparison to the likely highly experienced Kongos. We lost one and another is in jeopardy. One CVL is in trouble, and we lost CL Nashville. Other ships are in danger, of course. The IJN lost many ships, and both sides lost many aircraft and crews.

The first sign of the coming carnage was one of our subs being attacked when trying to get a shot at a heavy cruiser advancing toward our fleet. Daytime also saw the Empire using the confusion so send a tanker convoy east to run our blockade, possibly on the the theory that all of our carriers would be up north. Of course they are still covering troop movements to Cam Ranh Bay, but the Empire lacked search contacts to show that. The tankers did not advance far enough to come within range of carrier borne aircraft, but dive bombers at Jesselton found the range.

Our 2x CL TF was on patrol 2 hexes in front of our carriers and, most importantly, was not sighted by the Empire yesterday. They first intercepted 2x DD undoubtedly sent in to disrupt surface combat TFs, and then stood in the way of 2x Kongos and a CA. Next the same enemy ran into the CVL TF and would have torn it to bits, if not for the intervention of our most powerful TF, 2x fast BB, which stormed onto the scene and got their asses kicked. The night and day continued in a swirl of action from there. One of our old BB bombardment TFs saw battle, but they were all ordered to stay put (tonight they will be on patrol).

The carrier battles were defined by stamina, with most of the Allied hits coming after numerous attacks wore down the IJN CAP. Bringing in the CVL was critical, as was the intervention - and sacrifice - of the USN BB. Many strikes were split by weather plus separated from fighter escort.

Without further introduction:

Our stance tonight/tomorrow will be aggressive, with the two groups (1x TF each) on duty in the Cam Ranh Bay SLOC heading west to hit any remaining carriers and withdrawing surface ships. Almost all remaining CA and CL task forces will do the same, with some covering the Soc Trang area. The 3 old BB TF that did not engage will cover the port plus the carriers nearby. Four of the six CV near Soc Trang are out of sorties (22 remaining between the four of them!) and will withdraw to Jesselton in the hope that the size 6 airfield will be size 7 by the time they arrive to replenish their sorties. The other two CV will remain on station although they will have to go soon. The CVL are in decent shape. Everybody is low on or out of torpedoes. The two CV groups mentioned earlier - currently in the CRB SLOC - are well stocked. CVL Langley might make Cam Ranh Bay, absent enemy action.

The armour will attack at Quinhon tomorrow, and likely be joined by the infantry the following day. That enemy unit at Bien Hoa seems to have moved back to Saigon, where our troop will cross the river in two days. SE of Saigon our armour and paratroopers have caught up with the IJA Rgt and will attack it even though outgunned, simply to aid the coming battle for Saigon. The 2nd Australian Division, which captured Soc Trang, is moving out at full speed for Phnom Penh. The other units have all begun unloading at Soc Trang but much depends on IJN action tonight.

A few Light Industry hits at Soerabaja today. Recon shows 7 remaining, so some B-24 are switching to hit the Repair Shipyard.

Here is a snippet of a nighttime combat, but the real story is the number of enemy sightings on the map to the left!

Today's ship losses. Obviously this is 'confirmed' and certainly more ships on both sides are at great risk.

This is quite the end run!

Good luck!

Thanks! It seems luck was equally distributed, which was plenty good enough considering that we brought more to the party. But the Empire's battleships almost caught our nine CVL!!!

We had some battles in the Bismarck Sea, so I used it for one of the optionally named ships!
