Hello all,
My question is, if a group of four F-16's are in a dogfight with one Mig 29, as a group do they only evade or target together, or can they go independent if they have the sidewinder seeker on a target (or guns). This Mig 29 just shredded 3 f-16's between 2 groups with just guns.

I don't have a save from before the battle began.

Anyways just a curious question on the logic of how the dog fighting may work in game.

Thanks for reading and any help.

edit: here is a partial save from 100 seconds. The 2 F-16's were never able to chase down and get the mig 29 before and after he killed 2 of f-16s and 1 more f-16 in the 4 ship group to the southwest.

I killed the MiG in about 5 seconds with 1 AIM-9M (granted the game rolled a 1...).

1/2/1999 1:47:32 PM: Weapon: AIM-9M Sidewinder #4376 is attacking Fulcrum #9 with a base PH of 95%. PH adjusted for actual target speed (671 kts): 81%. Fulcrum #9 has nominal agility: 4.9. Agility adjusted for proficiency (Regular): 3.92. High-deflection impact (no effect on agility). Final agility modifier: -39%. Final PH: 42%. Result: 1 - HIT

The secret to dogfighting is to get your nose on the other aircraft, preferably without him getting his on yours, and employing your weapons with good parameters.

I guess it can roll a million different ways each time, my issue was more it seemed the f-16s wanted to fly together in group instead of getting position and engaging the Mig, thus the Mig dominated them with its guns and speed, Maybe that's a group thing, or I just got owned. :)

Thanks for the help!

I see what you mean. Yes, aircraft that are sortied as groups do stick together. F-16s are no slouch in the maneuvering department, though. I rarely allow my aircraft to fight WVR without taking direct control of them, however.

If you ungroup a group while in a dogfight...Will said units then dogfight more independently. Meaning once you go into the merge WVR, you could look to ungroup your grouped units....Would they fight more accordingly or would they still fight as a grouped unit?
