I am playing with the latest patch, against the AI. I am truly running into a brick wall as Germans.
I thought the game was changed a bit with the patch to encourage the Germans to be a little more active in 42,
rather than just turtling up.

I don't think its an issue that the Soviets did very well in 1941...I had a good blizzard for the Germans, and at
the start of the 1942 campaigning season, the Russians were down 4.7 mil in men or so.

Can anyone let me know the deal?

Thanks.

Oh, one other question. Do support units in the army HQ not have a chance to feed down to the attached corps when fighting? I attached the siege mrt and large caliber howitzers to 16A and when assaulting Leningrad, they are not getting pushed down to the attached corps. However, both 16A and its attached corps are support locked (if that's screwing things up) but that should only effect transfer of support units not their use in fighting, right?

Thanks.

Hi,

Mess around with different command set ups and reserve activation. Possible to get 6 units to attack from every "contact" hex, 3 adj, 3 more reserve. Get su from multiple hq to participate. Bomb first, attack second. Make saves, use reloads, to reroll the different situations, you'll get a feel for it some day. Su from army hq participate if one assault unit is assigned to that army.

Don't back off from multiple attacks if you really want the hex. Enormous variation in possible combat outcomes.

1942 is much easyer now then in the past.

1 HUGE mistake players make is they spread out there panzers, which is not historical also.

WitE models 42 very good, you can not attack across the hole front as in 1941.
You have to pick and area and pocket unit 5-10 min per turn.

As you pocket units over and over turn after turn the Russian
defencess will get weaker and weaker and you will start to see weak spots in the line.

To crack Leningrad or any wall:

I put all my 85+ morale infantry divisions in 4th PG. I transfer I Corp into it with Model in charge, 3 infantry divisions and 1 elite SS MoT division.
The other 2 Corp have 1 or 2 85+ morale infantry with 2-3 panzer divisions.

The Infantry all have 2 pioneers and a stug. The Corp HQ all have 6 200mm+ artillery units.

The infantry assault and the panzers are in reserve mode + LW has JU-87's. This will drop and hex even X CV and you will cross the river hex at Leningrad in 3 turn max if you have the port at 50%+

I love 42 more then 41.

Agreed, 1942 is each time different, 1941 has always the same beginning.

So the support units will feed from army to corps during an attack? I'm just not getting lucky in that regard then?

Thanks for the tips guys, sure doesn't seem all that easier than in the 'old' days, but I will keep slogging through and see.

I think Pelton nailed it: focus your Pz and your attacks. In some cases, in my very first 1942 attack, I have used my entire Pz force in a single attack. It's not necessarily historical, but you can blow/pocket a good 10x10 hole into the soviet defense, specially against the AI. Use your infantry to at least push the first row of defenders before using the Pz. I tend to have some spare infantry to blow at least one more row behind that. Definitely place that attack somewhere south of Moscow in good tank terrain. And then once you have blown that hole, you'll find the AI will typically pull-out a large chunk of it's front back, out of their entrenched positions. Once that starts it's easy to keep pocketing it more & more units that are not well entrenched. I have done this to humans also :)
My philosophy in early 1942 offensive is: ignore strategic goals. Pick a weaker point in the soviet front line and blast it with everything you have. That will largely unsettle the soviets and then it snowballs from there. Once the red army is damaged and on the run, you can focus on your strategic goals.

Have fun :)
