You say “Using that, in early 1944, I have few resources left in the Philippines.” So here I am confused. Do the resource centers keep producing or do they stop producing when you capture the base? If they are producing, are you just hauling them off faster than they are being produced? If they do not produce, is there a pile of resources there when you capture the base not shown on the mouse-over and that is what you have to haul?

For example, on Mindanao (subject to damage sustained) there are 40 resource centres and 20 LI factories. This produces 800 resources points per day of which 300 are used in LI to produce 20 supplies. This gives a net 500 resource points per day or about 180,000 per year.

Suppose I send a convoy with 30,000 supply out to Babeldoab. Then, rather than coming straight back, it can divert to Butuan where it can load up with 30,000 of these resources and take them back to Japan. This minimises burning fuel with an empty cargo hold. By consistently doing this I find most of the resources from the Philippines are sent home with no need to set-up regular convoys.

Resources accumulate on Sumatra, Java and Borneo because there is little need to send supply or troops there and the ports are busy with shipping oil/fuel home. However, the resources from the local area and the Philippines are easily enough for the Japanese industry.

Until the initial port improvements are complete, there won't be enough resources sent home but there are ample stockpiles to last this out. It took until August 1st 1942 for me to expand Fusan port to 8 but I probably didn't send as many engineers there as I could and I think there may be more engineers in scenario 2 than the scenario I played.

OK, the numbers are starting to fall into place.

These are newbie questions and I should have paid more attention to this stuff during my sand-boxing but I was too busy learning how to move the military around (and having more fun, uhhum, *cough, cough* not that this isn't fun).

Thank you for your patience.

Turn two is away so I will catch-up here and then go study cargo some more.

Fusan it is. I have sent all of the engineers in Korea and a few others there and a lot of tankers are headed there as Fusan set as their home port. I will send-in some more garrison soon.

obvert, I agree with no HI or LI expansion in the DEA and will study the areas you suggested. Also agree with infrastructure building and will look closely at that also.

Lowpe, I glanced at Captain Cruft's AAR and will try to finish it before Rio sends back the turn. A word about it.

When I first got this game besides playing with all of the little buttons, I started reading AARs and thinking how I wanted to play my game. Quixote's was about the third one and I told Rio one evening that the only true way for Japan to win this game was with Auto-Victory. I was looking forward to the computer flashing its screen, making bell sounds and announcing, “We have a winner here folks!” Quixote is extremely good but I thought that if I focused, studied hard and ate my spinach I could do that too. Then, while reading other AARs that were close to AV I saw how the poor Allied player was just reacting to prevent it and it did not look like fun. Then I read Mr. Kane vs. GJ and thought to myself, that is the way I want Japan to win.

Mr. Kane used a lot of air, Capt. Cruft is using a lot of air and the reason I am going to try to save and maximize my cargo is because, if you will pardon the technical language, I want a gazillion planes. I also want a lot of other stuff but more on that as we progress.

The Andamans, yes. Thank you for reminding me.

I hope CL Nagara is not one of the cruisers of which you are talking. That was the first ship I lost. Speaking of ships lost and Tracker. Tracker is set-up and regions imported and seems to be working. I know I should check the Tracker thread but I will throw it out hoping for a quick answer, no sunk ships are showing in Tracker. ??

I have three more major jobs to research and do after cargo. Shipping, pilot training, and leaders. For some reason I am just not looking forward to shipping but it must be done.

Dec 8, 1941, Turn Two

A fairly uneventful turn.

Another big difference between playing the AI vs. PBEM. Vs the AI, the fourteen ship SCTF at Lubang (78,78, SW Luzon) usually has a turkey shot. This time nothing and Rio managed to sneak a lot of stuff into the Sulu Sea, (screen shot). I suspect it is because he used a lot of small TFs whereas the AI sends two or three large TFs. My landings at San Fernando usually go a lot better but we did not take it this time. A few more troops two days out so will defend until they land. I also have ships on the way to hex 81,76, the coastal hex just east of Cabanatuan. I took Vigan and Laoag the first turn with paras and moved some air to Vigan this turn.

It appears that Rio is bugging-out all over the map. I sank one xAKL in a TF coming out of Hong Kong full of troops and now I suspect that the empty Amphibious TF that the KB sank last turn south of Singers was going in to pick-up the troops there. This is good news and bad news. I will be able to take what I want on the cheep but when he returns, he will return LARGE. This is one result of playing without Auto-Victory as it gives him the luxury of time to form his assault his way. I think this will give us a more interesting end-game, hopefully not devastating for me. I think that I will instead need two gazillion fighters though.

I captured Kota Bharu and will put some fighters and Betties there next turn even though they probably won't fly for awhile due to runway damage. Some engineers there and more on the way. I want the Betties there to see if I can pick-off some shipping in the Straits of Malacca. I usually wait another day before sending the troops into Mersing but there appears to be no Force Z and not much Allied air so in they go next turn.

Rio managed to catch and sink my xAKL that the Boise mangled last turn, this time with the CA Houston. I have ships heading to Muri and Brunei and ships loading for Singawang and Palembang.

There is a lot of movement in China as well. A lot of arrows pointing west and north-west. I will give my China strategy in a few more days as I want to see a bit more of what is happening.

Just a note, I read Captain Cruft's AAR. Interesting concept and execution. Too bad it had to end prematurely,
I really enjoy reading AARs, just wish I had more time to do so. Hopefully after I get all of this production stuff dealt with I can get back to them more.

Here is the complete spreadsheet of oil, refineries and H.I. in the same areas, China not included. Could someone please take a quick look at these numbers to see if my math is correct? I am still a little confused but getting there I hope. Thanks.

Dec 9, 1941, Turn Three

For the time being I have left my subs on computer control as I am not comfortable as how to use them yet and besides, I could not do much better than this.

ASW attack near Pearl Harbor at 184,99

Japanese Ships
SS I-2

Allied Ships
BB Pennsylvania, Torpedo hits 1
DD Hull
DD Helm

But she paid the price.

Sub attack near Pearl Harbor at 184,99

Japanese Ships
SS I-2, hits 2

Sub attack near Lahaina at 185,104

Japanese Ships
SS I-4

Allied Ships
AO Neosho, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
DD Dale

The first TF landed at Mersing but it appears that Rio has bugged again as there are no enemy troops to greet us.

The second wave landed at San Fernando so we will DA next turn.

I have started expanding key ports and forts at the H.I. I am also trying to catch-up and get ahead of my HQ and aviation support requirements.

Production

I doubled the L.I. at Fusan as previously discussed and also to help it become a bigger cargo sink. There are twelve tankers there with a few more on the way. One of them is loading, very slowly. I have placed the a/c I want to R&D in factories.

Change of plans.

Some background. One day well over a year ago Rio was showing me his cool new computer war game and encouraged me to read some of the stuff called AARs on the game's website. He was reading Bullwinkle58 (A) vs. 1EyedJacks (J) where Bullwinkle was able to establish a Fortress Palembang. I read it also, but knowing very little about the game, a lot of stuff meant very little to me and I practically wore-out my google maps looking-up all these strange names and where they were.

Fast forward. Three days ago I was getting tired of doing production stuff and decided I needed a break so I started reading obvert's “The Elephant Vanishes.” About half-way down page four, this sinking feeling came over me. Rio knows the value of Palembang and I could be in the same situation as obvert. So a nervous two days and I get back the turn and see the screen-shot below. Four APDs at Pbang. Bringing troops in or taking troops out? My Pbang invasion TF is still loading at Shanghai.

Fortunately I am not in the same predicament as obvert was at the time as I have an intact four CV TF sitting eleven hexes from Pbang and in the same hex are four amphibious TF ready to land at Mersing. I also have the Ryujo newly loaded with zeros sitting four hexes north of Muri with two amphibious TFs ready to go in next turn.

So next turn I am sending the six DMSs sitting at Mersing into PBang and TF 11 which is four CLs and three DDs will sit at hex 49,90, the channel into Pbang, to try to block any further entrance or egress. I am shifting the CV TF down a bit to provide air cover and TF 5 with its two BBs some CLs and DDs will drop down a little further to provide protection from any Allied SCTFs in the area. I will diverted two of the amphibious TF from the Mersing invasion with about 250 AV to escorted by TF 11 into Pbang the turn after next depending on what the DMSs find. I will bring the Ryujo group over and try to take Singkawang with it.

Hopefully if he is moving in he does not have too much there yet. I think that I should have focused more on this earlier anyway, my inexperience showing. Any other key areas that I am over-looking?

There's no way the Allies have APDs at Palembang on Dec 9th. If the Allies have any right now, they are USN ones way on the other side of the Pacific. I really don't think fortress Palembang is feasible if you take Singapore early like you are doing now. Has any Allied player pulled off a successful fortress Palembang after a successful Japanese landing at Mersing? I would only be concerned about Palembang in a game where the Japanese put Singapore and the DEI on a lower priority.

Thank you for your input Sangeli.

I am very ignorant concerning what the Allies have so your insight is valuable to me. I am just going by the mouse-over. What do you think they are?

The Dutch start the game with a four destroyer TF nearby. It is probably those ships.

We took Mersing unopposed. I'm not sure what Rio's strategy is here but it will allow me to get to Singers a day earlier. Nest turn I will send three armored regiments to the east to cut-off any further troops coming down and start moving to Johore Bahru.

The only air action worth noting.

Morning Air attack on Clark Field , at 79,76

ML No. 311, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage

----------------------

Another Gold Star to the Devs.

When I was doing all my sand-boxing I had all my Preferences set to minimum so I could speed through the replays, so, I had never heard Tokyo Rose before although I had read about her in other AARs. She came on after the last attack and of course according to her I sunk half of the US Navy. Cracked me up.

If the Devs had not included her in the game I doubt anyone would have given it a second thought. But here it is again, a nice little attention to detail.

---------------

We took San Fernando this turn. Again I like the results.

Ground combat at San Fernando (80,74)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19802 troops, 172 guns, 185 vehicles, Assault Value = 586

Defending force 2869 troops, 60 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 96

Japanese adjusted assault: 495

Allied adjusted defense: 3

Japanese assault odds: 165 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE San Fernando !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-)
morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
106 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Allied ground losses:
1378 casualties reported
Squads: 100 destroyed, 27 disabled
Non Combat: 23 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 7 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 32 (32 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Production

I started converting some of my ships but it is a tedious process so will take awhile. Also started replacing all of my Glens with Jakes.

Turn five is off.

They are out of toorps and are on their way to San Fernando to re-arm and then they will head to Davao for some invasion support.

Rio stated in an email that between yesterday and today I had sunk all of his TFs evacuating Hong Kong.

I had debated weather or not to send the DMSs hit by the two mean DDs at Pbang yesterday to Mersing where I have some naval support or to just leave them at Pbang. Since I did not know at the time what was at Pbang or how long it would take to capture it, I decided to send them to Mersing, and walked them right into this.

CHINA

If I were playing the Allies I would send everything I could to Sian, Lanchow and Chungking and dig in for the duration. I do not know if Rio realizes the importance of Sian and Lanchow but I am going to attack as if he does.

There are six usable divisions in the Kaifeng area at the start of the game. From Manchukuo and Korea I am bringing in five more divisions, all of the artillery, all of the engineers that are not going to Fusan, all of the armor, and all of the bombers.

I will deploy the divisions like this.

The 37th and 41st which start at hex 90,40 west of Chengting will push west along the road to Sian.
The 10th starts in Kiamusze and will strat to Taiyuan and will follow them . The 110th which starts in Paoting will strat to Taiyuan and then move to where the 37th and 31st started and remain there to act as a rear guard and to attack Yenan later if needed.

The 35th that starts at Kaifeng will stay there until the area is well cleared.

The 32nd that starts at Suchow will move up to clear the tracks and end-up in Kaifeng. The 36th which starts in Tangshan will strat to Anyang.

The 12th, 24th, 14th, 23rd, the artillery, and the engineers will strat out of Manchukuo and Korea to Anyang. I chose Anyang because it is the closest base next to the RR crossing at Kaifeng that is clear all the way and I can start the strats on day one.

Once the five divs are at Anyang, they and all of the big artillery will push into the RR crossing and then to Loyang and route the units there. This will clear the RR in that area. Four of the five divs will move west, north-west up the little road to Sian and I will eventually end-up with eight or so divs and a few regiments at Sian. One div will move down to Chengchow to help the 32nd and then follow the other four if able.

The 32nd will move west into Chengchow and route the units there and then move down the RR towards Hankow clearing the RR as they go.

I have strated seven armor regiments to Kweisui where they clear the area and then move north then west along the brown road to Lanchow. Playing the AI this is usually enough to take Lanchow but if I have to I will bring up as many units from Sian as I need to do the job. I am going to use the rest of the armor to take care of those pesky little units that tend to pop-up out of nowhere.

Once Sian and Lanchow are secure, I will go straight for the throat at Chungking.

There are several other regiments and smaller units that will assist of course.

I will be heavily bombing the units that I am attacking or will soon attack. I am bombing the bases around Kaifeng now and will soon start bombing Sian. The aviation support that I need is just starting to arrive but it will take too long to get to Hankow where most of the aircraft is stationed because of the blocked RR. To ease that, I have moved a lot of a/c to Chengting, 92,40, where aviation support will arrive in a day or two. There is more than enough organic aviation support in area but I am shipping some from Pescadores to be used temporarily at Hankow until the RR is cleared. I tend to forget that Hankow has a port.

In the south I will be moving a div into Shanghai, the 17th from Soochow, to fill garrison due to the exit or the 21s and another, the 15th at Nanking, to Hangchow for later deployment.

As for the rest of China,my units will mostly just sit where they are until I am ready to deal with it as dictated by Rio's movements..

Rio knows that I am going for all of China and has stated that his goal will be to make it as expensive as possible for me. It appears at this time he is moving most of his units to the west and north-west. I suspect that he will get as many units into Chungking as possible. If he does that I will probably bomb the industry there as well.

In the far west I have units from Hanoi and Haiphong moving up to Kunming and I will try to capture Kunming and then Tsuyung to attempt to block any movements into Burma. This will be futile if he sends a lot but I will try and it may give him something to think about. If I have time I may try to airlift some more units there and bring in some bombers.

Production

I am converting xAKs and xAKLs to PB's as per Mike Solli's “Once Again into the Breech.” I have about three-quarters of the ships to be converted in ports and went through the list keeping track of those that still need to get into port.

I am loading fuel at Pbang.

After a lot of consternation and research concerning pilot training I finally came to this conclusion.

Establish your training air groups.
Fill them up with pilots from the Replacement Pool.
Once trained to your goals, shove them into the Reserve Pool.
Repeat as necessary.

Here is a chart that I made for my own reference. Looks a lot more complicated than it really is.
Note, it is for moving pilots for training only, not the movement of pilots in non-training units. Please point-out any errors.

Can someone please tell me what is happening at Muri?

The mouse-over on Dec 7, 1941 shows Oil and Refinery at 150 (150). All of the other Oil and Refineries show their number and a zero on mouse-over, xxx (0), except Brunei next door which also has a number in parenthesis.

On Dec 19,1941 is shows 151 (150) for Oil and Refinery. Is Muri building or is this FOW?

I was about to pull the trigger on Muri but if it is building at his expense I will let it build-out before I take it.

Thanks.

Most certainly FOW, can't build new oil no matter what

After a lot of consternation and research concerning pilot training I finally came to this conclusion.

BTW, so many gamey things you can consider for your pilot training ;)
- Resize resizable IJN land-based CV/CS capable airgroups, using Akagi for F/DB/TB and Chitose/Chiyoda for floats. Gives you 81-sized and 24-sized units. Great for training and sweeping, bad for replacement airframes and pilot pools.
- Get all secondary FP airgroups off cruisers and resize them too into 24-sized units. They can happily take part in training your IJN fighter/bomber crews, do land-based ASW/Search duties all over the map etc. Later when some of CLs refit and can't carry their FPs any more you can resize those too.
- Use "Release pilot" button when transferring your pilots and never ever get an experience drop no matter the plane types
- Train IJN pilots on-map in those enlarged groups, instead of offmap, by forcing pilots into airgroups from training pools when replacement pool is already empty. They come with lower xp but it does not matter as they train way faster on map. Moreover, lower XP pilots are better for multiple skills training, as the latter slows down quite noticeably over 50+ xp.
- Build some obsolete airframes to fill the training groups, taking advantage of obsolete engines pools available (E8N2 Dave comes to mind). OK, this one is not gamey

Good luck!

Well GetAssista, that is exactly what I thought but take a look at this (below). I will monitor it and see what happens.

Thanks for the tips on gaming, err, training. Some of those I knew and, ummm, may have already done. But pulling the secondary FP group, using the release button only, and forcing the pilots out of the replacement pool are new ones and, ummm, will probably do. Those are good tips and I can use all the help I can get.

Muri (special) starts the game with half of the potential oil wells in a damaged state to represent the future potential of oil at this location. If repairing the oil is "on" for Muri, it will repair one point of oil per turn as long as >10,000 supply is maintained at the base, consuming 1000 supply per point repaired. Engineers are not required for these repairs to take place. Most JFB dump tens of thosands of supply points at Muri to repair oil points.

Thanks Simomsez. That is good to know.

(Just for the record, I did try to search this on the forum. You know how that goes.)

Dec 21, 1941, Turn Fifteen

This is not very exciting but I think it is very significant to the war effort.

A convoy left Pbang today with four tankers full of fuel. I also had two tankers leave Fusan with fuel for the H.I. I have CS convoys for resources between Sachalin and Hokkaido and Hokkaido and the H.I. The convoy system is getting easier to understand now that I have real stuff to haul and a base line from which to adjust. I have to admire the players who have the experience and knowledge to set this up from turn one.

I am still bombing in China and killing them by the dozens.

We took Davao today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Davao (79,91)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 12474 troops, 120 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 429

Defending force 408 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 22

Japanese adjusted assault: 186

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 186 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Davao !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
PBY-4 Catalina: 9 destroyed

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), preparation(-), fatigue(-)

Attacker: leaders(-)

Japanese ground losses:
36 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
423 casualties reported
Squads: 24 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled

We also took Miri with a little loss of factories.

We took Brunei today.

While working on my next turn I noticed that a lot of my air units are getting higher fatigue numbers. Most of them have good avation suport but I need more.

I found what I was looking for. I will repair the Oil but not the Refinery as the H.I. has excess Refinery.

Thanks again.
