I have been looking for a good ww2 tank simulation similar to the best flight simulations for a long time

Has anyone played Panzer Elite - the graphics look very similar to GIC/EYSA just with no troops.

Looks pretty dodgy from the screenshots I have seen though.

Is it worth downloading the demo?

Are there any better tank sims around Althrop?

I dont believe so...maybe steel beasts. But this is THE best WW2 tank sim around in my opinion. Its a little hard to get used to but once you have it down it will give you hours of fun.

Ill second that. The Ostpak mod is really good, the bulk of it comes with the rereleased edition, as well as some mods that add UK AFV's.

The graphics are pretty dated. Those screenshots look like slightly moded versions of the game (I don't seem to remember a truck...). The good thing is-there are a few diehards still working on the game, making new models and keeping it alive (mostly the aforementioned Ostpak).

Ostpak:

How do the troops act? Not much like GIC I guess. Do they run around in great swarms?

This may tide me over until EYSA comes out?

On another subject;

BTW: THe blitzrieg demo is a blast. FUN and great graphics with lots of cool features. However totally unrealistic and the men are very tiny. Great graphics too. I do like 3d graphics much better though.

I'll third it - Panzer Elite is excellent. Some of the graphs are dated, but overall (infantry excepted) it still looks reasonable enough at higher resolutions. Probably the best WW2 tank sim out there (WW2OL is probably the only competitor, but you need to get into the whole multiplay/teamwork thing with the "right" people).

Overall as a "tank sim" Steel Beasts is better, but the graphs are actually worse - and of course it isn't WW2. High hopes on Steel Beasts 2 though, but things seem to have gone a bit quiet on that front lately

Panzer Elite is without doubt the best WWII Tank sim out there. Its got a great following and is very keenly modded.

The great thing about buying it now, is that you get the added mod CD with the special edition copy.

Another thing about that SE disc that took me forever to figure out-there are a few bugs that can be fixed with files you can download at the Ostpak site. Otherwise, some of the mods won't work. Check their forum before installing that mod-someone screwed up something on the disc that comes with the SE.

The infantry is totally 2d, really awful looking by todays standards-but it gets the job done (and they have AT ability where apropriate, watch out).

PE

The PESE edition does have a couple of issues as follows.

1.If wanting to play MP then the 1.2 patch must be downloaded and installed.

2.The Ostpack install requires a fix/patch from the Derkampfpanzer.de site. The first 5 scenarios only are in this, there are another 12 you can download!
----------------------------------------------------

MODS

Ostpack gives the option of two new campaigns, Das Reich and "Tiger Ace". There is a new "Winterpack" addition for Ostpack which has 9 scenarios to date and is popular as it introduced the concept of airstrikes as well as arty.

The Brit44 mod should be version 1.02 (some say 1.02CD others 1.02a depending on which run of production!) There is now a patch to v1.04 with a MP patch to v1.04

Their are new scenarios available for this too at pedg.de The tank models are generally better than in Ostpack.

A Normandy graphics pack is available which improves the scenery no end.

Monty versus Rommel is a good desert mod set 1941 to 42 and is in the process of being updated with new tank models and improved graphics. ( I just tried a Beta scenario and the Honey is just that...a honey!)

Torch has been updated and is set in the Torch/kasserine campaign of 42/43

Lenorts PP2 mod is the one most commonly used for multiplay as it allows the use of differnet tank models not included in the game e.g. Pershing, Maus, E100, IS1/2/3 etc. Can also be played on its own.

The main sites for files/forum and downloads are

http://www.derkampfpanzer.de/
http://www.pedg.de/
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~pref8u/PE.htm
http://www.panzerelite.com/panzerelite.html

Hope this is helpfull ;)

One more saying "Yay!" for Panzer Elite. I bought the SE version... ghod, was it even last year? (and two weeks later they had a 100% rebate at CompUSA, so I *coulda* got it free...) and while the graphics *aren't* top-of-the-line, it's significantly better than Panzer Commander. (Remember, the SE rerelease with all the mods is just that - a rerelease. It's the same older engine as the original program.)

Compared to, say, Battlefield 1942, or the WWII mods for Operation Flashpoint, yeah, it's ugly... but it's pure tank. (With infantry and trucks to shoot at as well. I *think* there's prepared positions and guns as well, but it's been a while since I've played around with it.) Those nasty-looking infantry make up for it by being tough little $#!+$ - even in the open, popping a couple HE and a belt of MG isn't guaranteed to keep 'em from sniping your commander (if you're not buttoned), or popping a rocket off. Chase 'em into the buildings at your own risk...

I've seen it floating around the used-game shops here some, and discounted at the new-stuff joints - not down to the $10 rack yet, tho. Go for it!

Ok listen up, I am NOT a tank sim fanatic, nor am I an easy sell.

Anyone thanks thinks this is a fauning post for PE is sadly mistaken.

Not sure this link will provide any form of significant revelation, but hmmm why do you think I even have this link if I am not interested?

http://www.chipsbits.com/cgi-bin/order.cbi_home?client=246288&source=10678&page=catalogs/home.html&newpage=infopages/ULTIWCV3MW.IR.html

I have heard PE is a buggy piece of crapola. Maybe it is true you will be looking for skilled advice to get your full measure of amusement.

But I have played the demo, and I liked it myself. I enjoyed the game, and visually I thought the graphics were better than some of the current crop. Old does not translate into "not as good as new".

What do you honestly think the chances are, of me saying I liked a game that was not a dull turn based counter graphics looking wargame?

I am myself seriously contemplating getting the game.

If I liked it, it has to have some measure of unique hard to tie down quality eh.
