Even though the attack bombers missed Oi, the time spent fighting off the attack will cause her fires to grow - increasing the chance they can never be put out.

It's nice that the IJN is pretty much neutered here.

Forgot to add that my new F6F squadron is also covering the raids, so this'll be their combat debut.

I don't think you can make that assumption. Yes you dealt the IJN a setback to their CL fleet but in doing so your navy was likewise weakened (and to a greater degree I would argue because BBs are worth more). If another IJN fleet comes here that would invalidate your argument and that could happen at any moment. But if you are able to really take control of the air you may convince CF that it's simply too dangerous to have combat ships near Ceylon.

I'm wondering if putting all the planes under a common air HQ would help.

In order to overcome these sorts of heavy air defenses I think you really need to get your cruisers involved to hit the airfield at night before your bombers come flying over. If it were me, I'd do something like 1 day of heavy fighter sweeps followed by a cruiser bombardment at night then a bomber attack. I think its a mistake to rely on sweeps the same day to clear out enemy fighters if you know they are there. Also, you could try using more night bombing when daylight raids are going to be too costly.

Yes, this will help a lot to coordinate your strikes better. Having a level 9 airbase to hold all your bombers will help as well.

It's hard to do anything about these, being as effing fast as they are. Within the next 3 days or so, I'll have Colombo smothered in subs.

I took another big bombardment at Suva today. This one hurt a bit.

What appears to be KB is sitting three hexes SE of Suva. My convoy from New Zealand is being routed westwards towards the Tahiti area to avoid this.

My Jugs are loading up for Suva, along with some B-25s at San Francisco. More supplies to. I'm also rebasing some xAKLs and subchasers from Pearl to Suva. From there, I can deal out some supply to my new satellite bases.

You really need inland bases for your long range aircraft. No sense leaving them on the coast to be hit by naval bombardment like that when they have the range to hit all of Ceylon from an inland base. What does the base situation look like in southern India?

They're there, and reasonably sized. They won't pull in squat for supply though.

I've taken the rather extreme measure of spending the 1,000 PPs and converting this base to USN Pacific Ocean Area Command and then building about 20 PT boats there. I also upped a bunch of the boat captains. Maybe, I can reduce bombardment times, at least.

I did a random malice raid at Rabaul from Portland Roads. Some revenge anyway.

I'm sending a bunch of MLs and MGBs from Karachi over to serve as chaff to feed him. The Battleships will be out awhile, but I should have a bunch of cruisers ready within a few days, and I'll use them for guard duty. My CAP should deter the Betties.

Meanwhile, Madras has raised up a notch with his attention fixed on Cochin. Beauforts hit his transports two hexes from Trincomalee. I had fighters resting, which was a mistake. I lost some (replaced), but got one. All the air there is on alert, and we'll see if he decides to run the gauntlet.

(3 plane(s) diverted to support CAP in hex.)
3 plane(s) intercepting now.

Trincomalee had been empty, but I'm guessing he's moved air in there again. Probably no shipping there, though.

Intel Monkey had this to say:

quote:

1943-05-08 6/25th Division is loaded on xAP Teia Maru moving to Palembang -
1943-05-08 7/25th Division is loaded on a Japanese TK moving to Palembang -

CF must have gotten wind of this somehow. Many of the units I scattered though Australia are still prepping for Sumatra, and I'm wondering if he got tipped off in the intel screen. I've never seen a firm reading by the Japanese here before, so I'm unsure.

Palembang is one of the most important bases the Japanese have in the entire map. It's only logical that eventually a full Japanese division would be based there. Especially with China being a footnote in history.

Are you able to mine Cochin and perhaps curtail the enemy bombardments that way?

Mining seems to have minimal effect on bombardments unless you can get over 300 of them. Lower numbers seem to be treated as closer to shore (amphib landings will hit some) but bombardment TFs usually stand off at least 4K yards, even when their stand-off distance is set to 0. Better to mine a hex he has to pass through.

Mines have been running short as of late. I've had a number of missions planting them at Colombo. Probably about six subs worth.

Last turn Cochin had a visit from a bunch of the Japanese heavy hitters making a sweep. Fortunately, my fighters were resting. He seemed to be more interested in any ships rather than the airfields, to little effect.

Reinforcements have arrived in the form of 2 CAs, 1 CL and a CLAA (the Dutch one). That and the PTs should prove a deterrent, and I have enough fighters to probably keep the Betties away.

They did a number on them, despite the CAP bleed from Port Moresby. I remember a thread in the War Room from a few months ago asking about fighter casualties from medium bombers. Well, the 25s did bag a pair. These are definitely "attack bombers" as they strafed on the way in, despite being set at 1,000 feet. Looks like all that training time paid off. This bunch flew from Cairns. I moved a squadron of 38Gs there to help with any future jaunts. One of those things I didn't think of before.

My carriers, battleships and assault transports at Sydney are enroute to Pearl, via New Zealand. If KB spots them and makes a move, I'll probably let them. This is three fleet carriers and 8 CVEs, so there's *LOTS* of CAP present. 3 CVs and one CVE are fully stocked with F6Fs, too. One of the CVE TFs is taking the lead, and the rest are following. Should the worst happen, the accompanying BBs will probably siphon some off, too.

My TF from New Zealand is unloading at Savaii, dropping supplies and dive bombers. I should have an interlocking grid up before too long.

In my current game I had a battle where I concentrated 5 CVs, 11 CVEs, and 15 BB/BC against a 7 CV strong KB in Dec 42. Like you I thought that heavy CAP from my CVEs would give me the edge. I was wrong. Yes my heavy CAP/AA took down around ~250 IJN planes but at the end of the day 7/11 CVEs would sink and 2/5 CVs were crippled while the damage to the Japanese fleet was rather minor. My slow BBs being in a separate TF than my CVs or CVEs meant they contributed absolutely nothing to the battle as the Japanese didn't target them at all. The only thing that saved me was the fact that the Japanese had fuel problems after 2 days of full speed and a night charge of my fast capital ships managed to sink some ships to even out the losses. And you have even fewer CV/CVEs than I did and the KB could have more CVs than I faced as well; it's not a battle you want to fight.

On the other hand, in a prior game, three USN CV wiped out KB while covering an invasion, losing only one.  There's lots of variables at play, with many out of one's control.

I've been on the wrong side of luck in this game, so I don't want to push it.  I'm still sore about not splattering KB with my battleships earlier.

Everyone's moving via the New Zealand route, and nobody's been spotted, so all's well so far.  I'm uncertain what kind of reach his search planes at Noumea have.

I need more fighters in the Samoa area.  I have roughly half a dozen SBD squadrons there, but the escorts available won't cut it if he makes a move.  My fight at Ceylon is highlighting that nicely.  When the Jugs arrive, things should improve.  I have two B-24 squadrons there, which I plan to ship out.  I need the ramp space.  More base forces and Seabees are also loading up.  I'm thinking about getting a network built up near Tahiti, but I'm wondering if that's desperate overkill.

CF seems to have switched focus to Madras. The bombers came from the east, so it remains to be seen if he's starting a serious offensive here or if it's just our tit for tat raids.

My -1P Liberators have been starting to check out what's on the Jimas. Paramushiro-Jima appears to have 10,660 troops there, as well as a good sized fighter squadron present. Some assorted ships are in harbor, too. I'll be moving down the line to check each one out. It is a bit rich for what I've got I've got in the area (about a division worth).

I've been losing track of time. Essex arrived in Balboa today. Once she's on map, I'll send a bunch of destroyers to escort he into Pearl. In the next 2.5 months, one Essex and three Independence CV/CVLs will be showing up at Panama. Probably 2-3 more fleet ships before year's end, which means I can't go hog wild yet.

Over the next four days, two more fulled up P-47 squadrons arrive in Eastern USA. Two more of P-38Gs will also arrive in Charter Towers. After the Madras bashing, I'll be flipping USAAF squadrons in India to Jugs as fast as possible. It looks like must of my Suva disbandees will be arriving in San Fran in 10 days.

The lead CVE TF leading the carrier mob got spotted by a Glen and are at 1/1 detection level. I did splash the Glen. They're 10 hexes NW of New Zealand. His carriers are about 4 hexes S of Suva apparently heading west. They're basically just standing off the island at this point. No idea if he'll give chase or not. If he heads this way, I'll hide within the USN/USMC air umbrella I have at NZ.

First thing: P-40K + George = disaster.

What do your pilots look like? I think part of the issue is insufficient numbers of planes you have on CAP. Surely you have some other short ranged interceptors that can't find work outside of guarding bases like this?

My -1P Liberators have been starting to check out what's on the Jimas. Paramushiro-Jima appears to have 10,660 troops there, as well as a good sized fighter squadron present. Some assorted ships are in harbor, too. I'll be moving down the line to check each one out. It is a bit rich for what I've got I've got in the area (about a division worth).

I've mentioned before that I think that the Kuriles could be the key to victory for you. You've been pushed back many places but not the NorPac. But if you go after it it requires a complete dedicated effort on your part and you'd need to shift a lot of resources out here.

Hiding under an air umbrella isn't the way to go. Even with some LBA those CVEs will get crushed. Best bet is to escape in the open ocean and get that detection down. KB can't attack a target it can't find. Until early 44 that's the best defense you have against the KB.

I'm not sure offhand what the skills were and will check later.  They' weren't raw.  With my training regimen, the pools are filled with 60+ pilots.  I've only sent 1-2 aces stateside for training at this stage.  A neat thing was at Panama, I requested a veteran for Essex's fighters and was able to assign McCampbell, keeping things historic.

I've a division in San Francisco which is only days away from being bought out.  I can think about dedicating them to the north.  Flipping Cochin to a USN command cost a thousand points, so I have to make that up.

I was reviewing Japanese losses.  "Officially", Yamato and Haruna are sunk, which is wrong.  Haruna is dead as a side effect from the KB ambush earlier.  I believe both Yamashiros are gone, which should replace the Yamato stat.

Hopefully, he'll lose contact with my carriers, since I killed the floatplane.  Moving at CVE speed keeps the progress slow.  The CVE TF leading the bunch is set to max react with a very aggressive admiral in charge -- my thought being that if he comes at me, I want to close the distance quickly.  All my carrier mishaps involved getting struck at max range with little ability to retaliate.  To review, I have two 4 CVE TFs, one 3 CV group (two fast battleships and a CLAA are with these), and the remaining BBs, with heavy escort in the last bunch.  One of the CVEs flipped to Hellcats before everyone departed, so hopefully they'll get healed up fairly quickly.  Probably 6 days to get everyone up.  4 large F6F squadrons can only help things.

I believe the SBD-5 and early SB2Cs are coming online now.  I think they're coming in at the 30-40 rate per month, so conversion will be protracted.  I have over 100 SBD-3s in the pool, and I've started converting some of the Kingfisher squadrons over.  I usually keep a tight control on what converts or doesn't convert, as I watch the pools fairly closely.

I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. There is no sense having 2 or 3 divisions in the north. It's not enough to gain a foothold. You need 5+ divisions with a few division equivalents of other units if you want to do something up north. I don't think the Kuriles are an option for you until mid-44 unless you can defeat the KB before that. Better off sending that division somewhere else in the meantime. Check out the AAR of tiemanj vs Lowpe if you want to see a successful invasion in the north.

I too have noticed that sometimes when I sink a ship of one type that it oftens lists another inaccurate ship. Pretty common to sink one BB then see another one as being sunk. I take it you haven't sunk any Japanese CV/CVL/CVE yet then?

Tense times.

KB is headed south, being 10 hexes SW of Suva. A sub took a shot at a CVE, and fortunately, the IJN suffers from duds too, now and then. I did pound the snot out of it afterwards. putting 5 soft fuel leaking hits and one good hard hit. Good ol' Benson...

His carriers are in two TFs. I don't know how trustworthy these numbers are, but the sightings claim a total of 220 fighters and 333 bombers between them. I took stock of what I have.

I have a total of 301 fighters, 150 of them Hellcats. All fleet CVs and two CVEs have them. My total bomber count is 189. Hellcats can escort the bombers as far as they need having 10 with tanks. If I can't fully stop his raid, he'll have a bear of a time with mine.

I won't be able to outrun them, so I'm moving them to a spot two hexes SW of Auckland. Fighters and bombers there are on alert. One USMC TBF and one SBD squadron are there, plus some of the weaker Kiwi stuff. 4 USAAF P-40 squadron and 2 RNZAF P-40 squadrons are also there. Plenty of search capacity between there and Pago Pago. My group leader on the leading CVE force has a naval skill of 80 and 80 aggression, with the reaction range maxed. If/when we meet, I want them to get close with none of this max range stuff. If we don't meet next turn they will for sure the next.

I'm rather tense about this right now. Either I will take serious lumps and have my carrier situation set back a year, or the Pacific will be effectively mine after this. I was tempted to charge forth, but I'd like the extra land based help at this point.

Or maybe not...

KB has moved SE and is parked 14 hexes NE of Auckland. My guys are two hexes to the SW. He may be having a circumspect moment himself. Airplane count on the tooltip reads about the same as last turn.

Forgot to mention, another full squadron of Jugs arrive in the US. Preparing to ship out.

Cochin got swept this turn. It's been off-and-on again for the last few days, so I doubt anything serious is about to ramp up yet. My cruisers and destroyer there are about to bombard Colombo. They should make it in a turn, like he's done to me. His little ships are sitting there, so maybe I can finish the job.

First things first.

I'm embarrassed to say I've lost both my RN battleships near Cochin. Their damaged state along with some aggressive subs did them in. The downside of going in short on destroyers. For what it's worth, 4 USN DDs are on the way from Cape Town to bolster things up on that end.

CF appears hesitant to take on my carriers with his extended KB. They're further NE than before and appear to be heading northwards. One CVTF has split off about six hexes away from the other, which could prove an opening. I imagine he's concerned about losing the war on the eastern half of the map in a day.

I've had a bunch of Kingfisher squadrons in Sydney. I've flipped about three to SBDs. I notice about 26 SB2Cs in the pool, so by the time everyone gets back, I may be able to flip a couple squadrons. Some Wildcat squadrons upgraded to Corsairs and Hellcats. I'll probably move them to Portland Roads and think about an air offensive against Port Moresby. An invasion is looking a little more feasible at this point.

Yeowch. What's the current victory point status?

I'll have to look next turn. He was well over the autovictory threshold.

19 May 1943

Day of Decision.

CF moved his fleet in. His carriers are currently three hexes NE of mine. Weather was the only thing in the way this turn.

It'll most likely get hairy next turn.

My escorting SCFT with the two slow battleships are going to run right up the line next turn at flank speed. Hopefully, I can get some cheap decisive hits in during the night. I've also put out a bunch of DMs, Transports and other chaff to enter the general area to serve as distracting targets. It happened in my prior game messing up KB's strikes, so any little edge helps.

One of my CVEs is suddenly in an Escort TF with a bunch of flt damage. No ideal how that happened, and I don't see anything on the previous day's report. A sub took a shot at Lex, but missed, so I know he has at least two in the area.

My subs nailed an E and two xAKs this turn. Better torpedoes.

At this point, I'd be content losing all my carriers there if KB was likewise demolished. Another CVE showed up at Tacoma this turn. IF KB gets smacked, I'm immediately kicking off the Gilberts operation, and I'll follow it up fairly quickly in the Marshalls.

It all hinges on next turn.

The World Wonders...

Usually helps if your CV fleet comes in undetected while there are other fleets there. That's when those distractions are very helpful. If your CVs are fully detected, however, they will be sure to see the bulk of the attacks. BBs seem to be the best distraction in my experience.

Interesting! Usually on the ship it will say what gave it damage last but I have found that to be inaccurate (or sometimes just missing).

Anything close to a 1 to 1 trade would be absolutely amazing for you! That being said, I'm pretty skeptical that's going to happen. CF has been trying to force this battle and you're about to give it to him. This might be the end of the USN fleet...guess we will have to wait.

A decisive battle... sorta.

The ships running interference did their job, and the Japanese wasted plenty of ammo on them.

Task forces break off...

Mississippi ate about 3 18.1" hits, and one of the cruisers took another. This is what I wish my KB encounter was earlier in the game. Kaga's hosed. Two of her hits were fuel explosions. She ain't gonna make it back. Hiyo, Ryujo and Zuiho are also most likely dead, given IJA damage control. The second encounter was with his older battleships. I've seen most of mine are more likely to resist major hits than his did. Mississippi was beat up enough from the first fight that she separated and missed the second.

Then daylight came...

One thing to notice. If you have more than one TF in a hex, the strikes seem to transcend any target groups and hit the bunch as a whole, which is probably good for the defender.

The upsetting part is that less than one carrier's worth of my aircraft went after his ships. I should have given him the same treatment. This is outright bad luck on my end. I know there's the coordination issue with the USN, but at least they could have flown.

What happens next will probably depend on CF's move. Both of us have busted up ships all over the place. The lesser half of KB did get ravaged good. Most of my battleships here are in dire straits, and a number of them probably won't live out the next day. North Carolina can only make three knots. My fleet carriers are savable if they can reach port safely. Most of the air groups did recover in New Zealand. I have a bunch of fighters at Gisborne LRCAPping my carriers. I don't think I have any CVEs left. Most of his planes did go after them rather than the fleet ships, so I'm lucky they're in the state they're in. At Gisborne, I have a bunch of dive bombers and TBFs with an escort and they'll probably sortie if he pursues. I'm also gathering up all the survivors to hit back if they get the chance.

If my big carriers get away, I'll treat this as a victory.

Better than what I had feared! That BB charge at night saved the day for you. You did a fair amount of damage on that charge taking out the slower CV/CVL of the IJN. A couple of them could sink. Not the best ships of the IJN but once their aircraft are in the air they pack as much punch as any Japanese CV.

At this point what you need to do I think is get your CVs disbanded in a port with as much air cover as possible. I wouldn't even bother letting those DB/TB fly since you're unlikely to get through CAP and you really need those fighters protecting your crippled CVs. If you can get them disbanded they become a lot harder to sink.

FYI you should really think about changing your surface force composition. I think the main principle is grouping ships with similar ranges and speed so putting slow BBs with fast CAs isn't the best fleet composition. But hey they got the job done so what do I really know?

I can't comment on tactics but that was a hell of a battle! Quite a show for the spectators! Good luck with your damaged ships.
