noob question: How do I protect some target?

Now, I got my SAG right, with a DDG, several FFG and a tanker. Now I want them to protect a cargo ship and travel along with it, kill any one who tries to get close to the high value ship, could that work? I did not see any options to conduct an escort mission, is there any way to do that? many thanks.

First thing that came to my mind:

Create a patrol mission, set a couple of patrol waypoints at whatever distance from the cargo ship that you want the SAG to generally be at, to the front, to the side, wherever.

Then create a prosecution zone for the mission, that encircles the cargo ship. Dont forget to set the mission to "investigate contacts outside patrol zone".

Select all reference points and make them relative to the cargo ship on a fixed (ref points will move with the assigned ship but will remain at a constant bearing) or relative (ref
points rotate with the assigned ship) bearing.

The SAG will then orbit the patrol waypoints and the waypoints will move along with the cargo ship. The ship will investigate any contact that enters the prosecution zone, which will also remain centred on the ship. The various RoE and other settings will determine whether your SAG opens fire on a contact or not. If a contact leaves the prosecution zone, the SAG will disengage and lose interest.

Is a straight forward, simple escort mission out of the question?

I think the cargo ship would have to be assigned to a strike mission in order to do that.

Someone correct me if Im wrong?

Select all the vessels you want protected and their escorts with your mouse. Group them into a group. Use the formation editor to arrange them into a formation like you want them. They will defend one another automatically if you have them on "Weapons Free." Use the ROE to "fine tune" the degree of autonomy you want to give them.

But I am tring to protect target of third side, e.g. tanker from other contries. In that way, I can not group them with my SAG.

I am trying to use the mobile waypoint way described eariler in this post to solve this problem
