Have you checked the manual: Port size against gun / torpedo load out?

As CF states the table is in the manual.

The one criteria I have managed to commit to memory is a level 7 port is need for 8 inch guns.

Naval support can be added to a port to increase it's capability. The table includes this info as well.

Various types of tenders can replenish various types of ships regardless of the port size as well.

ADs and ASs are great for supplying fish to DDs and SSs at ports not large enough to do so.

The "trouble" is that it lists by device name, not by ship type and whatnot. After a while, you won't need this table except in very specific circumstances.

Hans, it is level 6 for 8' guns

But level 7 is the rule of thumb. You can rearm everything except Yamato guns at a level 7 port. And even Yamato guns can be rearmed if you add some naval support

When you start the game, you might be short of level 7 ports, thus it makes sense to pick one level 6 port close to the front and then put as much naval support as you can; so that you can at least rearm old, smaller caliber battleships (like the Kongos)

Alternately, you can convert a few Lima class xAK to AKE. It only takes about 30 days to do the conversion, and a Lima AKE can rearm everything except Yamato.

On the Japanese side, yes - everything but Yamato at a 7. You still need a bit of naval support for USN 16" guns, though.

My rule of thumb for 8" guns, Allied and Japanese, is size 5 with a good naval base force. They're a bit easier to come by than a size 6, depending on the area of the map. That said, if a port can be size 7, I will absolutely build it because it allows for fixing up to 5 points of major float and/or engine damage without needing a shipyard.

Somebody put this file together but I forget who.

Note: It is a PDF file but the forum does not allow PDF attachments. So, the file type has been changed to .txt ('Ship Repair.txt'). After you download the file, rename it from .txt to .pdf.

But as usual in WitP, it ain't always that simple.

Recently, Rangoon was about ready to click up to a size-7 port, I thought, "Now my R-class BBs can re-arm there."

Sorry, Charlie - those beebs are too big to negotiate the waters to Rangoon, look elsewhere if you want to give them more fuel & ammo. Thank the gods, I had enough Brit Fighter CAP at range > 0 to fend off the IJ air attacks while the BB TF tried to decide what it should do next.

Put a sufficiently sized ammo tender (AE or AKE) someplace nearby.
