What is the lower limit of shielding to allow my scientist laden research base to survive sabotage?

Similarly, what is the lower limit of shielding for ships to "absorb" the blast from traps triggered when moving to abandon ships/bases?

This type of sabotage is an intelligence agent action. I don't believe that there is any kind of limit on shielding which would allow your research base to survive; the agent's mission either succeeds (in which case the base explodes), or it fails. I can't recall ever seeing base sabotage result in a damaged base rather than a destroyed base, regardless of how large or heavily-shielded it is.

I don't know, and I wouldn't be surprised if it varies depending on how big the ship or station is. I'd suggest giving your exploration ships 5-10 armor plates, maybe a bit more, to avoid damage to critical components, and toss on a repair bot or two when you can.

I have had large bases survive a successful sabotage attack in a damaged state, but its rare and in all cases they were very large bases (large star ports). I have no idea whether shielding makes a difference. So much about this game is completely undocumented.

There are possibly two things at play here, one destroy base and the other sabotage construction. Destroy base = destroyed and if you upset a handful of groups (both pirate and empire) then if you have any small stations they'll get targeted first and blown up eventually (even if you have good counter esp, they'll get it through eventually) and then there is sabotage construction which doesn't effect station made ships from what I've seen but can effect ships built by colonies (construction ships, colony ships, stations), stations being built by construction ships. I am also fairly certain that retrofitting can allow for a station to be targeted by a sabotage mission if it takes long enough to finish. The sabotage missions don't usually destroy the thing being made but almost does. Station size plays a major part and so does counter intelligence usually if your stations are above 1k in size the number of attempts of either destruction or sabotage tend to be low but if you have smaller stations they will get swarmed by attempts, the exception to the rule is places being constructed by construction ships as they are vulnerable for some time while being constructed, if you are lucky then they wont target it too soon so that it probably will survive and your constructor will repair and continue the task otherwise you'll have to reschedule the whole thing again.
