How many Japanese troops are in Thailand and Malaya?

Between 80k and 90k trapped in northern Thailand. Bangkok area plus the other bases south of there, the troops north of there (ex-Pisanuloke), and the ones to the east variously trying to hold open the door or make there way out, a rough guess is 60k or 70k. Maybe I can count up mouse-overs. I don't have recon on all the bases south of Bangkok, but I think those are weakly held when at all.

OK, here are mouse-overs. Only bothered with troop numbers, unless they were 0 (one case, gave AFV) or no data (gave unit count).

That's a lot less than I thought to be honest. With this few troops, it seems you will be able to conquer Thailand and Indochina relatively soon! Makes you wonder how many he has at SIngapore, though I know you said you don't plan to go there anytime soon...

I forget the most recent mouse-over I saw of Singapore, but at that time there was a movement arrow to the north.

As far as the number of troops trapped/getting trapped, remember that a large number were already destroyed in Burma and some numbers have fallen in Thailand and Indochina.

From a Japanese perspective, that's a lot of troops that could be defending somewhere else. That's a lot of VPs also. They are all pretty much dead.

Tomorrow our forces that captured Pisanuloke will likely catch up to the ex-defenders. We hope to attack them before they can move on so they are retreated toward Ayuthia and kept in the open. Likewise our armour and two divisions NW of Bangkok is marching in Follow mode to attack across the river into Bangkok itself, with the idea of eventually forcing a retreat to Ayuthia.

We continue to have supply issues at Rahaeng (225), Uttaradit (900), and Pisanuloke (450) - daily supply caps shown in parens. This situation will probably persist for some time. The shortage of available engineers to build things (raising the daily cap) will also persist for some time as there are other priorities.

Hue is ours. A shadow of a division and another unit were retreated into Udon Thani and now we firmly control the roads to Indochina.

The USA 158th IR marching our of Balikpapan has made it the two hexes to the road south to Bandjermasin. The 14th NZ Bde will begin marching to Miri now that Brunei has switched sides. The convoy that brought them will go to Jolo to pick up the Torres Strait Bn for transport to Brunei, where they will deal with the Imperial 3rd Tank Regiment (ex-Jesselton) at Beaufort. Our fly boys made several ineffective air strikes on the 3rd today. The Ternate invasion force is beginning loading, but some artillery units are still transitioning from strategic mode (better to wait before loading to hold down fatigue & disruption, but I gave the orders already). Still >14,000 enemy troops seen at Ternate, so the USA 31st IR will appreciate the six artillery Bns going with them! The USA 24th IR loaded at Makassar and is about to pass Kendari on their way to Morotai. There the convoy will load up on supplies, then proceed to land on Ulithi. If things go rough for them there the 15th NZ Bde at Puerto Princesa is partly prepared and could be brought in, albeit slowly. The Pagan invasion requires one more trip from Anatahan to fetch the rest of one Bde.

We have 103 B-29-1 ready at Tinian and Saipan but steady rain over all of Japan.

Here is Thailand/Indochina after the actions today. It looks even better! While it's hard to see, my Mk 3.5 Hand Loupe tells me there is a movement arrow at Lao Cai SW along the rail line (toward Hanoi). The plan to push there with SWPac ground forces and destroy LI and HI at Hong Kong and Canton should work in harmony. There are now 2 units for >10k troops at Lang Son with a movement arrow heading west.

Looks to me like he is moving troops to Hanoi to try keep the door open for the troops in the Chinese mountains south of Kunming to get to Lao Cai and rail to Lang Son for escape to South China. With your armour blasting through the opposition on the coast road he may end up with even more troops trapped in Indochina!

The two southernmost hexes of Imperial troops that tried to flank our valiant, heroic army in China did come from Lao Cai and I suppose that is the shortest way back for them. I plan to attack the southernmost one in a few days (it's 1x unit) and try to trap the other stack.

I've been reducing Allied supply needs in China by pulling out most non-Chinese command combat units. They are no longer needed for defense and can make significant contributions to the offense elsewhere. IIRC Chinese units use less supply than other Allied units?? When Imperial supply in China really gets tight (from destruction of industry and demands due to the Allies attack through northern Indochina, the Chinese Army might even have success attacking out of the mountains.

Being an evenhanded sort, I'm also working to reduce the supply needs of the Empire by destroying as many Imperial squads/devices as I possibly can.

My own take is that he is trying to establish a defense in the Hanoi area. If his Chiang Mai army does outrun the pursuit I'm sure they will angle that way, but I don't think they will outrun the pursuit and I doubt he thinks so either.

Kratie is ours and another blow dealt to the Empire's beleaguered delaying forces. True to the end, one unit remains in place despite 12 to 1 odds!

BB Washington was down to 90% flotation damage yesterday, but is at 97% after encountering a random sharknado.

Damage Control parties trapped in flooded compartment aboard BB Washington ...

Next attack at Dili is tomorrow. An IJN surface force, 3x ships with 1x E identified, is at the southern entrance to the Makassar Strait. The weather over Japan is forecast thunderstorms for tomorrow, the first 'break' in a while. Target: Manpower at Osaka/Kyoto; 65x B-29-1 at Saipan and 58x B-29-1 at Tinian are ready, total 123 plus any that repair during the night. Altitude 15,000 ft.

A quick look at Thailand/Indochina. There are now 17,000 enemy troops at Vinh. The preliminary plan is to flank it and get behind it with armor while the infantry approaches with more armour from the front.

No recon there.

The B-29s suffer from the Empire's CAP when they fly. Given that and how long they take to repair with service level 5 I am trying to maximize their chances of doing meaningful damage when they do fly.

BTW, Tokyo has some ginormous number of guns present, like more than 800. And while I can't see how many are AA it being the biggest bestest target it must have hundreds. When I sent the B-29s there at 15,000 ft they seemed to get more hits than at 12,000 on prior missions elsewhere. I know there are lots of other factors, especially for any single mission, but I figure that maybe getting out of range of many types of guns allowed them much better bombing accuracy. Time will tell I suppose.

How many places have you bombed with the B29. I remember Tokyo and Nagoya I think.

Are all your B29 pilots decent to great?

I think that might be all in Japan, but Nagoya at least twice. I would have to look back to see the other targets from before their transfer to the Marianas. There were some targets in China to destroy LI and HI, the same in Thailand and Indochina. One or more bases on Java and Palembang got visits. Some were airfield targeted raids to make following raids easier.

The pilots are nearly all of my best high level bomber pilots. 'Nearly' all because there are some 4EB squadrons that I haven't stripped yet.

The thing is that you could really use a shipyard. Which means either Singapore, Hong Kong or Manila. You will need one for the inevitable kamikaze damage.

Our subs had another day off.

Quiet in China.

The armoured pursuit south of Pisanuloke smashed in the retreating enemy and routed them toward Ayuthia, keeping them in clear terrain and moving them off the road leading into the jungle they were using. Imperial armour at Nakhon Ratchasima was absolutely shattered in the open terrain, allowing the paras to destroy both units there and capture the base.

One division will remain at Kratie to guard the undefeated in the jungle and take advantage of the time to recover more fully. The other two divisions plus both USA Tk Bns will make strat road movement to Udon Thani, with the infantry closing on Vinh and the armor sweeping through the northern bases to cut off the roads north of Vinh. The artillery will get to the rail line and move up the coast. The armoured cars have contacted and will tomorrow attack the delaying enemy unit inside the Burma border. The river crossing into Bangkok will also be tomorrow.

The IJN sent a straggler repairing at Miri racing for home waters but Stugots lived up to her name. Surprisingly, that TF entering the Makassar Strait turned out to be a tanker convoy, obviously trying to slip north. They were dispatched by destroyers.

Recovery will take a while, and perhaps we will send in some help.

The USA 158th IR on Borneo has been contacted by one of the fleeing ex-defenders of Balikpapan. They will suspend their march to Bandjermasin and attack before resuming their march. The Ternate invasion forces will land tomorrow.

21 B-29 were lost and only those at Tinian flew. They are standing down but the groups at Saipan are remaining with orders, which just might catch the defense recovering. Damage was far less than hoped. But take heart: we received 1 replacement B-29 and 20 new B-29 in two arriving squadrons, so material losses were made up!

Here is the overview map.

The thing is that you could really use a shipyard. Which means either Singapore, Hong Kong or Manila. You will need one for the inevitable kamikaze damage.

I have a 10k shipyard at Saigon, which is already repairing DDs and CLAAs and will serve for subs. I agree on the desire to capture one or more of those three. Still working it out, but do plan to press on Hong Kong sooner than Singapore, unless resistance to Singers is light.

Man - Japan's rising sun is being eclipsed by a cloud of US stars (and stripes) and multiple Brit crosses. Should let the Aussies and Kiwis contribute a few of their stars ...

Quiet in China.

A pretty good river crossing into Bangkok, but the troops are knackered and will rest. The armoured cars were too little to dislodge the Thai Rgt. The infantry will be needed; probably two days before the first arrives.

BB Washington sunk.

The B-29 groups at Saipan did not fly again today, and I do not know why. Weather was overcast, but I think they should have flown out of that?? Here is Osaka/Kyoto.

Poor BB Washington, she didn't make it. A pity that. At least the progress in indochina / Thailand is good (and forts immediately reduced to 0 at Bangkok is nice as well!).

Regarding the B-29s ... I only played against the AI for now, but it's one of the most irritating things in the game. When planes do not fly and you're not given even a clue as to why... Realistically speaking, it would be very nice to have a reason at least. And while the game tried to be realistic, well, it should be possible to give stringent orders "No matter what the cost".

I imagine that back then, when high command ordered the various bases to "Attack no matter what because the landing is going on tomorrow", planes DID fly no matter what the weather...

Try to imagine the Normandy landings if paratroopers had not been deployed because "Hey it's overcast so no planes are going to launch from our base". yeah, I don't think so.
