Thanks. Daito Shoto can also be shut down by B-29 so no naval bombardments are wasted when they are needed most at Okinawa.

Waste of B29s I think.

How many combat B29 squadrons do you have in striking range of the Empire? What are their sizes in planes?

That would only be a one day or two day mission.

Here is all of them, including new arrivals on their way to the front. IIRC there are none currently on rail transit.

Thanks so much.

See the 498th 847th BS? 10 planes, good to go. Switch them over to night, and have them pick a 2nd tier city that you have recon on and see what they can do at 7K or 8K depending upon guns there.

Given the crushing levels of troops cut off, you may think about targeting his vehicles? Conversely, you may want to simply start fires, or target his plane factories. Up to you really, but how about a night test?

Or send a squadron to the far west to strike deep inside China.

Thanks so much.

See the 498th 847th BS? 10 planes, good to go. That one plus the 870th are new arrivals not yet in combat (870th has 3 planes still in transit at Hawaii). Switch them over to night, and have them pick a 2nd tier city that you have recon on and see what they can do at 7K or 8K depending upon guns there. Not an HR, but I want to wait as long as possible before switching B-29 to night bombing or doing both night and day bombing. I've been thinking about two things on that point, one is commencing at least some night bombing on January 1, 1945 and the other is commencing night bombing when day bombing got just too costly. I forgot to mention that Singapore now has only a few fighters and some auxiliary types. I think the combination of racing up the coast of Indochina (now well over 100 fighters at Hanoi) plus the effectiveness of the first few raids on the Home Islands has prompted redeployment of fighters.

Given the crushing levels of troops cut off, you may think about targeting his vehicles? I thought about this but wasn't sure how effective destroying them would be? You suggest it so likely it would matter. Conversely, you may want to simply start fires Doing that so far., or target his plane factories. Have to sort out what to target. I have some work to do there. Up to you really, but how about a night test? See above. I'm not defeated on day strikes yet, but those were painful. I suspect that if the entire mob had flown on one day the losses (two day total = 49) would have been about 25 with possibly greater damage done. In hindsight I should have stood down the base that did not fly until the first base was ready again. I wanted to try it and see. I tried it and I saw!

Or send a squadron to the far west to strike deep inside China. I already hit what industry I could from India and Burma when the B-29 groups first arrived. With Quinhon the B-24 groups can get Hong Kong and Canton, but bringing back some B-29 to hit deeper is an option after that has been accomplished.

I figured I would start with Manpower strikes on the Home Islands because it would maximize the damage done, whereas targeting a specific factory would result in more bombs being clean misses. That's the impression I have of how it works, hope that's correct.

Not sure if Chungking has been partially repaired or if I never finished it off for whatever reason. It can be hit by B-29-1 from Akyab (22 hexes), or by B-24 from Hanoi (14 hexes). There are also a number of LI and HI targets that can be hit from Hanoi.

Tourane, Hue, and Vinh are all 13 hexes from Hong Kong and so can serve as bases for fighter sweeps, which will be important to preserve the B-24 groups. After destroying the LI and HI at Hong Kong and Canton the B-24s can hit the airfields to try and get supply hits until they have bases to hit other LI and HI targets.

I have additional base forces a few days out from Uttaradit. When I have enough air support there the plan is to launch several squadrons of P-47/Thunderbolt, P-51, and P-38 from Uttaradit, Moulmein, and Quinhon to sweep the (presently) 123x fighters at Hanoi. This is a way of indirectly supporting the Hong Kong/Canton operation before the closer sweep bases are ready.

Meant to add:

No more B-29-1 groups are listed to arrive.

There is one B-29B group arriving in 41 days. That is the night-specific model with very few guns, so I will definitely run night missions with that group as soon as it is available, although it won't get replacements until March of '45.

It will be October before B-29-25 groups begin arriving. That plane has ranges of 31/38, as opposed to 28/35 for the B-29-1 currently in service. Saipan and Tinian will still be an extended range flight to the Home Islands, but all of Kyushu and all but the two northernmost bases on Honshu will be within range. That will be important to spread out the Empire's defenses.

Nice to see a realistic Allied show at this point of the war. I'm not an AFB or JFB, just call me a realist in that I like to see some semblance to history. I think you can definitely say that you've done better than the real-life Allies at this date in the war against a very good Japanese opponent.

Have you considered just driving up the coast into China as your main effort? I haven't followed closely enough to determine what's left of the Combined fleet (I cite only for purposes of the HI assault), but it you were to take staging points in China and Taiwan, perhaps you could bypass Okinawa and base your B-29s on the mainland. It would certainly preserve the fleet from kamis until you need to invade Japan itself.

Needless to say, I think you may have found the weak point to the Japanese in this game. I'd argue the new Allied norm might entail hitting the DEI, jumping to Indochina and driving up into China. The historic strategy of Marianas, Iwo, Okinawa coupled with B29s smashing the empire doesn't work. Allied land units outclass Japanese at this stage, makes sense to me to exploit. You also starve the empire of resources by taking the mainland.

EDIT: Taiwan thought; I like the idea of taking the island as a precursor to Okinawa. Not an expert by any means, but I would imagine you could base a good number of air assets here. I still like the drive into China though.

EDIT: Taiwan thought; I like the idea of taking the island as a precursor to Okinawa. Not an expert by any means, but I would imagine you could base a good number of air assets here. I still like the drive into China though.

Going back several turns/pages I laid out the broad strokes. Here is most of it in one place:
• Most of the SEAC ground strength will drive down the peninsula to Singapore.
• Most of the SWPac ground strength, along with the expatriate parts of the Chinese Army, will drive into China.
• SWPac will primarily focus on coastal regions.
• Chinese Army will primarily move inland.
• Ground elements of SoPac and PacAO that have so far been seconded to SEAC will form the nucleus of the Formosa invasion.
• B-24, and perhaps B-29, strikes will destroy LI and HI ahead of the advance to deny supply to the Empire.
• The Okinawa invasion forces are fully prepared, although not marshaled. Okinawa is the next major amphibious operation, awaiting repair and upgrade of various combat vessels.

Some comments on your points/questions/suggestions above (in no particular order).
• Walter is a very tough opponent! And aggressive. I might well have secured the center of China but he... just... kept... coming!
• 'China main effort... bypass Okinawa... base B-29s on the mainland' - The big problem with this approach to getting B-29 bases closer to the Home Islands is that it will (IMO) take too long.
• 'the new Allied norm might entail hitting the DEI, jumping to Indochina and driving up into China.' - I think others have done this. I'm not even sure that the drive mostly through the DEI (and sort of less "into" if you see my meaning) is new. The course of every game is unique, and it worked out well in this game. The best way to phrase this is in terms of time. If the Allies' advance were later than I was able to start, or started much farther back, then the choices would be much harder and the opposition stiffer (newer Imperial aircraft, etc.). Many AARs show an Allied player struggling at this point or later with getting their B-29s into range of Japan. If I were in that situation I doubt I could have afforded the resources to effect trapping the Empire's more forward Asian armies. Hitting and/or cutting off the DEI is definitely a key strategy that the Japanese player must defend against. BTW, just remember that HI generated in the DEI can be used by factories anywhere on the map because it just goes straight into a global pool.
• 'Taiwan thought; I like the idea of taking the island as a precursor to Okinawa.' - Maybe in another game, but here the Formosa forces have just begun preparing and have a long way to go while the Okinawa forces are fully prepared. Just a consequence of the Formosa plan being purely a opportunistic decision on my part. It was not part of the plan earlier.
• I figure that Okinawa plus the drive up the coast of China will pull defenders away from Formosa, if that hasn't already happened.

I'm sure I left out a lot!

Our subs are so bored they are considering moving to another AAR.

Quiet in China.

Mostly maneuvering for the SEAC forces advancing. Two more Imperial units crossed the river SE of Chiang Mai and had to shock attack.

It will be several days before the armor and infantry moving by truck arrives at Udon Thani, organizes, then moves to support their attack. The TD Bn will continue attacking in the meantime. The 775th (nearer to Vinh) was bombed ineffectively by Vals from Hanoi.

Operations continue slowly at Dili and Ternate. Movement continues on Borneo (toward Bandjermasin, Miri, and Beaufort). Saumlaki will be seized tomorrow. Today is D-2 for Ulithi.

I disbanded some B-29 groups that withdraw in October to get the group count down, and of course the planes help to fill out other groups. Started checking ranges from Moulmein. Size 9 with lots of air support to spare, maybe I can hit a bunch of LI (and some HI) farther behind the lines in China with B-29s when the B-24s hit Hong Kong.

One is still on fire.

At 87 System/46 Float/65 Fires Breton is not going to make it unless you can afford to assign a couple of cruisers to help firefighting and even then they will need a miracle. Better put lifejackets on those Hellcats and push them over the side ...

Our subs saw action! One unsuccessfully attacked a surface combat TF in the South China Sea. Another sub in the Straits of Malacca got an xAK but was pounded brutally for the success.

Quiet in China.

The Empire conducted a recon bombardment across the river from Chiang Mai.

Our units continue to maneuver to achieve final encirclement of several units and pockets of units. Armour has caught Imperial units north of Ayuthia and will attack tomorrow to retreat them into that city. Our armoured car unit on the road from Taung Gyi, always faster on the road than the infantry, has caught up to the enemy. However only one unit is seen instead of two, so they will attack alone to maximize the pressure. They should have friends in hex the day after tomorrow.

The attack north of Udon Thani is wearing away at the Japanese there. The TD Bn does need to rest tomorrow, though.

North of Hue will finally see an attack tomorrow. A TD Bn is in position near Vinh so that retreat from near Hue will be allowed tomorrow, but the day after the TD Bn will cut the road. A Tank Rgt that participates in tomorrow's attack will race NW after the attack to cut off the only other land hex while the main force pursues and destroys the retreating Imperials when they are finally fixed in place. There is at least one Imperial unit unit south from Vinh but the TD Bn coupled with air strikes already underway should hold them off long enough. We now have a Tank Rgt at Siem Reap and will seize the city shortly. Tomorrow a TD Bn (just released from loan to SEAC) will arrive at Chanthaburi on coast of the gulf of Siam. Those events mean that over at Battambang the only retreat left open will be along the road toward Ayuthia, so our forces there will attack tomorrow.

An IJN surface combat TF sortied from Singapore and ran into Allied air from Jesselton.

Indochina, at al. The RTA Rgt west of Bangkok has either withdrawn or fallen below the DL threshold. They were hit by Allied air strikes during the turn.

More and more. >40,000 troops and more units. Looks like a strong point, not sure what the unit was moving north a short while ago - maybe just a unit there to plug the dike until stronger forces arrived.
Where the heck are they moving to...SE?
Maybe to keep open a door for the 3 (now 2) retreating units? Dunno.

Judging by colors, it seems Indochina is yours with only token forces at Hanoi. Is that right?
Not really. Loads of fighters and some bombers at Hanoi and additional air power at Lao Cai. Still more units moving through Lang Son heading toward battle!

Can you paradrop on Luangprabang? If in fact it is empty...perhaps strafe it for some better recon.
Maybe, but I want to retreat the units there from/through Viennetian (spelling is worng!). The armor will chase them (two Sherman tank Bns coming) while the two infantry divisions turn right and approach Vinh from the faster road (then cross country 1 hex).

All those Allied troops heading south down the coast road! Let loose the dogs of war! The center can't hold...argh, looks bleak for Japan here.
The trapping of Imperial forces near Chiang Mai and near Bangkok/Battambang is certain. Troop movements seen on Java. Troop count at Singapore has grown to ~48k. Seems that Singapore and some part of the peninsula is being reinforced.

The Breton is still doomed without some naval support.
I know.

We have another armoured Rgt at Battambang so in spite of the rising disruption of the other troops all will attack again tomorrow.

The troops on Ulithi auto-evacuated and are on their way to Guam for some ice cream. Bring on the Kiwi Bde in a few weeks. Lautem will be invaded by an Ind Coy tomorrow, so the troops at Dili will attack on the heels of an overnight bombardment by the Dutch Navy.

Indochina, et al. >43,000 troops at Vinh and another 4,800 in the unit just to the SE (probably a Rgt).
