The problem comes up when they stop singing and start shouting. Some people like shouting.
warspite1

Not necessarily - ever hear an OMD or a Simple Minds track? McCluskey and Kerr don't shout - their Liverpudlian and Scottish accents are just bloody difficult to understand....

On the other hand, I wish Richard Harris had garbled the lyrics to MacArthur Park so I could've taken it seriously.

Just as funny is when a song containing lyrics in one language becomes a hit in a country speaking another. In the mid-70s, my 20-something uncle was singing Lady Marmalade (then a big US hit by LaBelle) in my grandmother's kitchen. When he got to the chorus (which I won't repeat in case there are any underage French speakers on this forum), my grandmother, who was raised in Tunis, nearly slapped him silly.

This is the general forum for War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition. Matrix also has a General Discussion forum which is not related to any game. This forum is busier though.

Like, what's your point? Gag me with a spoon!

I am from the Valley, but the other one, the San Gabriel Valley which is not noted for any particular contributions to culture at all. (In SoCal, references to "The Valley" usually means the San Fernando Valley which the song Valley Girl was about and it is noted as a separate sub-culture from the rest of So Cal. The San Gabriel Valley is just as big with just as large a population, but even many Angelenoes often don't know it exists, it's just a hill you over driving east.)

A woman speaking cockney, however, is the opposite. Think Billie Piper pushing her best cockney in Dr. Who.
warspite1

Billie Piper (thankfully) had only a very mild Cockney or estuary English accent in evidence in Doctor Who (well she was born in Swindon? for goodness sake).... Even so it really bugged me on the few occasions it came through to any degree and she would fail to pronounce a t for example. No one expects BBC English anymore, but....

Sadly this lazy way of speaking is becoming more prevalent in the UK as people think its cool and moron, right-on media bosses go out of their way to hire presenters, DJ's etc who speak like this. Even worse are two fairly recent happenings: Firstly the rise of Jafaican, where dumb-arse white kids think its cool to speak with a mix of cockney and Jamaican patois. Pet peeve? No that £$%^ turns me into a homicidal loon. I got on the train the other day and a young kid who should know better was on da phone asking his mate "where is you?". I had to stick my ipod on loud to drown out the assault on my eardrums; either that or chuck him off the train before reaching the station. The even more recent phenomena is for previously "normal" speakers to start purposely adopting a cockney accent as they think they are "gettin daan wiv da youff".

So no its not cool its just plain lazy. My dad and his family - 4 brothers and sisters - were "true" cockneys - born within the sound of the bow bells, just before during and just after the First World War, into a poverty that our generation would find a world away - sharing a "bathroom" with other families, no hot running water, and certainly no money. My dad went to school only until he was 13, but despite that upbringing he never dropped an H or missed a T in his life. No one has to speak that way - its just lazyness (or worse - idiots trying to be cool).

As for regional accents, they are a real mixed bunch. I think they all have a charm of their own - provided they are not toooooo broad, at which point they can become difficult for the listener in fully understanding. It also depends a lot on who is speaking of course. I find female regional accents generally sweet. Brummie is perhaps the least "ear-friendly" of them all - regardless of who is speaking Sorry to those from Birmingham and environs

Wheyey Cheryl, you can talk Geordie to me all day pet - I'll listen

Be still my aged heart.

OK, I have a moneymaking idea. It's in "real" estate. Thing is the only land I would have to buy would be enough for a little marina on the river. I'd build what would basically be houseboats and advertise the development as Driftwood Estates. Cash business, pay in full up front. Once the new homeowners move all their stuff in and occupy a unit, I would cut it free and it would float down the river. I would have saved some cost by not providing an anchor (that would be in the fine print). It would be their responsibility to acquire one once they realized they didn't have one. Plus I would then have a new slip to put a new home in. Any investors out there? OK FAQ. Yes, the fact that I'm going to cut them loose would be in the fine print.

Ok, I have another pet peeve. This time it's not about car commercials (though they deserve all the bile I can choke up), but about car insurance commercials. I won't name names, but every one has the Statue of Liberty in the background. You know the ones. One of them has this guy saying 'all of a sudden this guy T-Bones you BAM! 'Why did that guy T-Bone me, you ask' Wouldn't a better question be why do you have that insurance?

Well, that particular commercial is not the subject of today's pet peeve. Well, what is it, you ask? It's this newer one where this woman, walking away from you at a 45 degree angle, looking over her shoulder in your direction and talking to you. The Statue of Liberty as usual is in the background but she's walking (if you can call it that) toward a park bench that thankfully doesn't have a homeless guy sleeping on it. She's carrying a Starbuck's latte or some such thing and taking baby steps, while holding up her end of a conversation that isn't a conversation at all. Just as if you were real and (perhaps) just about to "T-Bone" her. Why baby steps? (you ask) Well she's dressed as if she's ready to do some yard work, as soon as she finishes her latte. (But why is that the reason she's taking baby steps you ask)? Well, that's not the reason. She's walking on 4" stilettoes across grass. Who produced that ad, and what was going through their little BB brain you ask? Beats me.

The offending ad agency is Havas Worldwide New York, who won the account in 2014. You might recognize another one of their campaigns:

I think the main question is being missed here - namely: What is the woman on the right got on her left hand?

a) an oven mitten
b) a rubbish boxing glove or
c) a very small chicken?

Supplementary:

Why has she got a pint, while the saddo in the middle is tooling around with a bottle?

Just askin'......

That's a Rigelian babelone. The only way to remove it, once it has you, is to amputate the limb (or pour Bud Lite on it). The important question is how do you remove Santa's hand from that woman's leg on the left?

That is not her leg. Gorn eyesight is notoriously bad I know, but I thought this was pretty obvious:

- her leg is behind a little bald man, sitting on the floor while licking her knee.
- grandad's hand is placed on the man's head so as to guide the licking motion.

You barbarians. The young lady on the left simply preferred draft to bottled beer. And as for that...appliance, well, you'll just have to let your imagination wander. As for the young lady on the left, she is a martial arts instructor. Just before this picture was taken she said "Want to loose that arm?", hence my slightly crestfallen expression

Still, the rest of the evening was entertaining
