Playing as the humans, I get assigned to all manner of systems.

I'm sure I'm making a mistake during the game setup.

What should I do to ensure I end up on Sol?

Open the game editor and rename the system to Sol, or only play the Ancient Galaxy map.

None of the various species, including humans, have predefined starting worlds; if you pay attention to the storylines (or to the startup cinematic), you'll notice that the game's premise is that your homeworld, and those of the various other empires, and all the independent colonies, and all the hidden colonies, were once colonies of a number of hyperspace-capable empires, which have collapsed due to some catastrophic events (the nature of one might be evident when watching the opening cinematic).

Unless you're playing a premade/scenario game, you'll never be placed in 'Sol' for your starting system as it's not part of the default random names available when the map is created. Race-specific 'home systems' are only generated after the inital map has been set and the settings spawn a/the first human independent colony.

If you want to have your home system as Sol, just go into the game editor and change the star name, etc.

Actually there is a chance that you will start in Sol system as Humans, but its really just luck of the draw. I have had it happen more than once though, so it certainly can happen.

The editor is the only way to ensure it though, but...be sure you find the system named Sol from random generation and rename it to prevent issues later on.
