The only air force that seems to suffer significantly from fatigue is the Coastal Air Force that often has units over 20 fatigue (especially Torpedo Bombers). This happens even though in the early part of the 43-45 Campaign I reinforce with units from Coastal Command.

As they have a big job to do keeping sea lanes open, you get into a downward spiral as when you rest some units it presumably puts more strain on others. It is the only air force I have this problem with (maybe because others get to rest from low morale?).

Has anyone any advice on how to set up air doctrines or air directives to reduce fatigue whilst remaining effective?

Fatigue is a result of flying missions every day. I usually just leave the coastal command on auto naval patrol....but if you want to fly them yourself, you get to decide what days they fly. If they are too tired (and really, is 20 tired?) then give them a break...give them Wednesday off.

What does auto naval patrol do then? I assumed that to protect your supplies to landings, or naval interdict a besieged port for example, you needed to set specific directives.

I don't get the same fatigue problems with my tactical air forces on seven days a week interdiction missions.

Not sure the significance of any particular level of fatigue (no more scientific than my cut off of 65 for morale), but I thought that performance would fall with fatigue just as it does with morale.

Auto Naval patrols will fly (the same way your Naval Air missions fly) except they range out as far as they can and drop their bombs/torpedos/mines/dirty laundry.

There is a huge dispersal in power though. You have the power to drop 8-9's in an area with manual missions. The auto missions spread out and will put up a sea of 4's...3's...down to 1's farther out.

However..in general all you need is a 2 in a hex to protect it for shipping. The main cause of damage in a hex to your shipping will come from whether the hex is contested, friendly or enemy. To be friendly it only has to be 2 greater then the enemy, which in most cases will be 2 as the enemy will have no value.

Fatigue does affect combat, but they are not likely to be fighting while dropping their stuff on the sea.

To partly answer my own question, I have now put a better officer in charge, and that appears to help as well.

I've just experienced the same issue as the OP and Googled "Coastal Air Force". Like the OP I changed the commander. In my case from Lloyd to Air Commodore (now Air Vice Marshal ) Robert M. Foster.
