Had this large post I was going to offer on midstarting strategy as a semi-new guy but then realised the only reason the BIG guys were not posting it was because they are Big guys and they want you to experience it for yourself. All I can say is... Your opponent can not be every where... all of the time.

biggins-

Welcome to The War College.

I think what The War College Scholars are trying to impress upon me is to be very, very careful what the Allies choose to tackle this early in the war.

When I find out where that damn El Lobo KB is, I will strike somewhere.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Question Regarding Aircraft Disband/Withdrawal

for

The War College

Gentlemen:

I notice that at Brisbane, several squadrons are scheduled to be disbanded or withdrawn a bit later this month (i.e., in March of 1942). Some of these squadrons show upgrades are available.

At this stage of the war, is it best to disband these aircraft or to withdraw them?

And, would it be prudent to upgrade these aircraft prior to disbanding or withdrawing the aircraft?

If you need more information; perhaps the names of the actual squadrons in question, I can provide the same.

Best Regards,

-Terry

I'm a little unsure what you are getting at. Most times when a squadron withdraws the aircraft go into the pool. Sometimes they can't due to the squadron being isolated and the aircraft are lost. Sometimes it's basically an out of theater withdrawal and the aircraft and pilots are lost (by go to the Atlantic). So why would you consider upgrading the aircraft before they withdraw? They reason I can think of is if you are desperate to keep their current aircraft but are OK to risk losing the ones they would upgrade to.

No don't upgrade!

If they are a valuable airframe type, then it's best to DOWNGRADE any that would take the planes with them and not deliver them into the pools.

It's also best to strip all pilots out of the squads that will take them out of theater, although your opponent might call this gamey.

Good point about the planes if the group goes out of theater.

But I take the opposite view about the pilots in that case, because I use those groups for training. I figure if I train the pilots for weeks and months then I can take the pilots before the group withdraws. YMMV.

Hans & witpqs-

Regarding the Brisbane Air Groups:

1.) To date (March 8, 1942), Japan has not threatened Australia.

2.) Except for the ATC Sqn, all Brisbane Air Groups are scheduled to disband or withdraw.

3.) Is it best to disband or withdraw these Air Groups?

Best Regards,

-Terry

It's dependent on the message you get when selecting the two choices.

If when you select withdraw you get a message that planes and pilots will be returned to the pools then go ahead and withdraw.

If the message is planes and pilots will be lost then don't withdraw.

If when you go to disband you get a message that planes and pilots will be returned to the pools then go ahead and disband.

If when you go to disband you get a message that the planes and pilots will be lost you may be stuck with losing the airframes if you don't downgrade them first.

Whether planes and pilots will be lost is sometimes dependent on where the squad is stationed and sometimes it is hard coded and can't be avoided.

The pilots can always be transferred out no matter what.

I seem to recall that if you station the A24 withdrawing squads in the same hex with non-withdrawing A24s and disband all planes will be transferred into the non-withdrawing squads.

With no receiving squad in the same hex the planes will be lost.

All of this warrants some experimentation to get the hang of what is best to do in a given situation.

"Disband" means planes and pilots go to another group in the same nationality code and equipped with the same planes. It looks like you don't have any that are staying - all withdraw, so you have no choice.

Hans and witpqs-

Dangit.

Kind of liked having the Brisbane Air Groups in Brisbane.

The deadline date is the 15th of March.

I will withdraw those Brisbane Air Groups on the 14th of March.

As soon as I find out whom is responsible for this decision, heads are going to roll.

So, my Commanders best duck.

*laughing*

Thank you Hans and witpqs.

Best Regards,

First few games I played I lost the A24 airframes.

After that I started planning ahead to make sure I had those squads at the same location as the other group of A24s that don't withdraw, the 3rd Bomb Group IIRC.

Experience is the best teacher.

Your screen capture says the date is March 8, so you have some time to move the groups to where there ARE squadrons that will stay. Look around the map, anywhere within drop-tank range that is also a valid location to withdraw the aircraft (big enough AF, etc. - I forget what all the rules are). You may have to take a few hops to get there.

BBfanboy-

Right now, other than Brisbane, the vast amount of my squadrons are at Melbourne. So, I will fly the Brisbane Air Groups to Melbourne and then withdraw (not disband) those Air Groups.

Thank you for that advice as now I may be able to save some of these aircraft.

Burma Update

for

The War College

Gentlemen:

We have been at war with El Lobo's Japanese Evil Empire for ninety-five (95) days. To date, as you will notice from the map below, El Lobo has not invaded Burma.

India has grown strong. Primary troop concentrations in India are as follows:

Karachi: Northern Command Troops (497 AV)
Hyderabad (Sindh): Chinese Troops (1,483 AV)...Reserve
Ahmecabad: I Australian Corps Troops (1,680 AV)...Reserve
Surat: Eastern Command Troops (403 AV)
Bombay: Southern Command Troops (467 AV)
Jalgaon: ABDA Troops (237 AV)...Reserve
Bhopal: III India Corps Troops (740 AV)...Reserve
Cawnpore: Burma Corps Troops (1,400 AV)...Reserve
Bangalore: Eastern Command Troops (306 AV)
Hyderabad: U.S. Army Troops (382 AV)...Reserve
Madras: Southern Command Troops (364 AV)
Calcutta: Eastern Command Troops (174 AV)

Three (3) more Chinese Corps are close to entering India and are heading for Hyderabad (Sindh).

U. S. Army Troops continue to pour into India on a Daily basis.

Considering El Lobo hasn't moved on Burma, I am considering moving the Burma Corps and I Australian Corps to Burma. And, I am considering moving III India Corps to Ceylon.

Perhaps it is premature to strip India of the Burma, I Australian, and III Indian Corps'?

Please provide your analysis and comments.

Best Regards,

Terry

I do not know your opponent's experience level or aggressiveness, so it is hard to judge what the lack of action in Burma means.
With experienced players it normally means they are gathering troops to attack Australia, the Aleutians, or deep into SoPac.
So you have a risk of being blind-sided in another theatre and an opportunity to first develop solid bases in Burma and then push into Indo-China.

One of the keys to decision making is accounting for all the Japanese Divisions. Search this forum (AARs) and the War Room forum to find the lists people have made of the IJA divisions. Then go back over your Sigint and bombing data to see which ones are where. If a bunch are missing, keep a good reserve of troops available to react when they show up.

Also keep in mind the IJN still controls the seas so transferring troops to places like Australia and SoPac must be well covered.

BBfanboy-

I have kept a list as to where Japanese ground forces were last seen. I am fully aware that the Japanese carriers, for now, command the water.

It is difficult to predict what El Lobo has in mind. On the one hand, I can envision him not expanding too far; conserving his fuel, supply, and fighting machine. On the other hand, El Lobo is definitely a methodical and calculated risk-taker and he could strike anywhere he thinks he might get a good bang for his buck!

Now then, on the one hand, it would be nice to move into and give that Rising Sun a good battle in Burma or on Ceylon. If he stuffed India with considerable Japanese forces, he could no doubt strangle Burma. And, if he landed on Ceylon with sufficient power, he could decimate any troops I put on Ceylon. On the other hand, staying put in India for now and playing "Rope a Dope" could prove to be fruitful. IF El Lobo over-extended himself in India, he could get himself into big trouble in India.

For now, considering that I haven't a clue where the KB is and haven't a clue where El Lobo's next big target might be, if any, "Rope a Dope" will remain in effect.

Thank you for your comment and warnings, BBfanboy.

Best Regards,

-Terry

India Aircraft

Question and Advice for

The War College

Gentlemen-

I want to prepare to be in the best shape possible to destroy Japanese airbases. Accordingly, I want to train India Bomber aircraft to bomb Japanese airfields and I want to train the Fighter aircraft to escort the Bombers.

Please advise as to the best settings to accomplish the above stated goal for the following types of India based aircraft:

Bombers

Bleinheim I (MLB)
Bleinheim IV (MLB)
Hudson I (MLB)
Hudson IIIa (MLB)

Wirraway (LLB)
Audax I (LLB)
Lysander II (LLB)
Wapiti IIa (LLB)

Fighters

Hurricane I Trop
Hurricane IIa Trop
Hurricane IIB Trop
H81-A3
Buffalo I
Bleinheim IF
Mohawk IV

Upon arrival of the II U.S. Fighter Squadrons and V U.S. Bomber Squadrons, I will request settings for those air groups too for Japanese airfield destruction purposes.

Best Regrads,

-Terry

I take it your question is about training, not operations, so that is what I will comment on.

All training should be taken at range 0 to reduce fatigue. Setting a longer range does not improve training in any way.
For bombers, you must decide what they will be most needed for - land bombing, naval attack or ASW, or Recon.

In my experience land bombing is the majority of the work, so set most bomber squadrons training in Airfield Attack or Ground Attack, altitude 2000 feet. The low altitude still trains GroundB skill, and it also gives a good rate of training in Defensive skill.

The Lysanders carry a camera so many players train them in Recon. Altitude can be as low as 100 feet - I use 1000 feet.

Torpedo bombers should train at 1000' or 100' with torpedoes for NavT or with bombs for Low Naval.

Hudson IIIs have good range and can be used for Naval Search or ASW, if you do not need them for land bombing. Use 1000' or 100' during training.

Unless the enemy has a sitting duck group in the open, with no CAP and no AA, the light bombers should only be used for training (other than Lysander Recons).

Blenheims seem best at bombing land targets.

All fighters should train escort or sweep to gain Air skill. Use 1000 feet during training. Altitude does not seem to affect the training gains except for Defensive skill. Once Air skill is in the 70s you can consider training them in Ground Attack at 1000 feet (if they can carry a bomb or two) or Strafe at 100 feet.

I leave it to more experienced players to advise on the operational altitudes. My own experience is that it varies depending on what the enemy has for CAP and AA, what the weather is and how badly I want to hit the target (take heavier losses to ensure target is hit).

You must also temper the desire to hit as hard as possible with the ability to replace aircraft and pilots.

BBfanboy-

Your assumption is correct; I was asking about settings for training purposes.

Thank you for all the good information. I will implement the same on March 15, 1942!

Best Regards,

-Terry
