31 December 1942- 6 January 1943 (81st week of the war)

Over 100,000 men of Transaucasus Front are trapped south of Rostov. Stalin has another one of his fits and berates Chief of Staff Voroshilov during one of the evening briefings at the Kremlin for over 30 minutes. The commander of the assigned mobile reserve in the area was 5th Shock Army’s General Maior Gusev. Stalin now has lost all patience for the failings of his commanders. Gusev is sacked after only four weeks of command. General-Leitenant Rodion Malinovsky is named his replacement.

7-13 January 1943 (82nd week of the war)

Penza has been liberated by troops of 39th Army commanded by Nikolai Vatutin.

Red Army troops in the Stalingrad area continue pushing German forces steadily back. With the butchers work done at Rostov, the panzers pull back west of the Don.

3rd Shock Army commander, General-Maior Ivan Chernyakhovsky, was promoted to General-Leitenant largely due to his consistent success in combat.

Crimea Front was renamed North Caucasus Front

Stalingrad Front was renamed Southern Front

45th ShAP from 26 DBAD Transcaucasus Air Command was renamed 20th GShAP. In late December, the regiment destroyed no less than 98 ground elements in a single week.

Things are looking up, the tide is turning about when expected

You look to be in a fairly good position.

14-27 January 1943 (83rd & 84th week of the war)

The first major Soviet offensive since the previous winter continues west of Stalingrad. Largely coordinated by Southern Front Chief of Operations General Aleksei Antonov, Troops of Konev’s 16th, Tolbukhin’s 63rd, Chernyakhovsky’s 3rd Shock and Bobkin’s 1st Shock Army launch a coordinated series of blows that sends the enemy westward.

West of Saransk, sufficient troops have been massed to force a general withdrawal of German mobile formations in the area.

Personnel changes are made within the Voronezh Front. 58th Army General Maior Solomatin is replaced by General Maior Leonid Govorov. 42nd Army General Maior Starikov is replaced by General Maior Vasily Glagolev.

All 29 U-2VS regiments of the VVS were disbanded.

28 January – 3 February 1943 (85th week of the war)

The offensive in the Stalingrad area is now coupled with attacks west of Saransk. Red Army units attack in the southern direction in an attempt to cut the rail line leading to Penza. The town of Morshank west of the River Tsna is the objective. If successful, it will force the withdrawal of enemy forces near Saransk and Penza and create an opportunity to liberate the city of Tambov.

Are you using a special version of goranw's mod of Jison's map, M60? I'm asking because I really like what goranw did, but the one available on his site is a bit to "grey and dark" for me, making it hard to differentiate between various kinds of terrain, whereas yours seems more colorful.

11-17 February 1943 (87th week of the war)

Attacks continue in the Saransk and Stalingrad areas.

The city of Saransk has been liberated as troops in the area continue to pressure the enemy in the region.

German defenses are clearly being prepared southeast of Boguchar along the Chir River as more powerful tank divisions are appearing.

General-Leitenant Chernyakhovsky of 3rd Shock Army who was promoted only five weeks earlier has again been elevated in rank, now to General-Polkovnik.

It seems that the enemy is finally on the run at least in part, with two zones of Soviet offensive operations. But Fritz has one more card to play...

Dave has done really great with his OOB 4.4 million and 6300 AFV's.

He should be able to hold the lines until early 44

He needs to set up RR asap.

Yes, his OOB is formidable and it isn't done growing. By keeping his attacks on the conservative side, he protects himself from my counterattacks and doesn't run his troops into the ground. You can see all sorts of high CVs in both his panzer and infantry units. His style of play really fits in well with this latest version of the game. Under these conditions a grand Soviet offensive in 1943 looks very unlikely. But without a Stalingrad to thin his ranks, this could be considered a plausible outcome.

Yep hes sitting pretty good. I find it difficult to attack Pelton and his army has over .5 million less men and about half as many AFV/Aircraft. By February our OOBs should be very close to the same as I have like 2,000 T34s sitting in the pool for when the regiments upgrade hits in January 1943.

Lack of trucks is the only reason im holding off from forming more tank/mech corps right now.

I'll check the "Operationskarte" thread again then. The only link I could find is leading to goranw's site, which now only has the "old" vanilla map with added names and the newer jison version which is like yours, but much darker, greyer and washed out. Thanks, M60,and sorry for the interruption

18-24 February 1943 (88th week of the war)

While two Soviet offensives were underway, the German mobile divisions in front of Moscow quietly disappeared in previous weeks. A feeling of complacency had set in along the Volkhov Front and it was here in the Valdai region that the enemy re-appeared in strength with eight panzer and three motorized divisions.

Reinforcements from various armies were immediately called to the area to seal the breach.

25 February – 3 March 1943 (89th week of the war)

Defensive lines are reestablished but over 150,000 men of the Volkhov and Leningrad Fronts are surrounded. The 48th and 61st Armies of the Volkhov Front are the main occupants of this pocket.

A special commission dispatched by the State Committee for Defense to the Volkhov Front headquarters reported little to no Soviet reconnaissance was conducted in recent weeks. General Maior of Aviation S. Khudyakov was reprimanded as well as the commander of the VVS Marshal of Aviation Falakeev for having insufficient reconnaissance aircraft deployed. Eight new regiments are activated to provide increased surveillance from the Leningrad to the Transcaucasus Fronts.

Although Marshal Voroshilov was not held at fault for this latest setback, the consensus within the walls of the Kremlin was that his days as Chief of the General Staff were numbered. Less clear was who his replacement might be, as Marshal Shaposhnikov's health was known not to be improving. Neither Marshal Budyonny nor Marshal Kulik were considered serious candidates. General Armii Meretskov was a possibility as he had previously served in the capacity as Chief of the General Staff, but it was equally likely a new candidate might emerge as senior general officers rose to a similar rank within the Red Army.

4-10 March 1943 (90th week of the war)

The weather is turning once again as the worst blizzard conditions dissipate.

Enemy forces complete their almost total destruction of the 48th and 61st Armies in the area of the Volkhov Front.

In the Tambov area the Red Army continues the advance in the southern direction.

In the Stalingrad area, the advance up to the Chir River continues. There is encouraging news as the SS Wiking division suffers three consecutive defeats while attempting to rout the 15th Rifle Brigade and 9th Light Howitzer Brigade. In response, Walther Nehring commits 19th Panzer Division to assist the SS in finally forcing the units back. Days later counterattacks by troops of 51st Army throws the Wiking Division out of its defensive positions.

Rear Area Services reports the Red Army vehicle situation improving significantly as Lend Lease trucks have arrived in the proverbial nick of time. Over 18,000 trucks have been added to the truck fleet over the course of the first nine weeks of the year.

11-17 March 1943 (91st week of the war)

Progress in the Tambov region continues. The Voronezh and Bryansk Fronts form a continuous line, allowing the release of divisions previously sent there by the Northwest and Volkhov Fronts. These released divisions will be able to re-establish a firm defense in the north once again.

In the Stalingrad region, the German defenses are stiffening south of the Don. Colonel General Antonov switches Chernyakhovsky’s 3rd Shock to the north to assist Konev’s 16th Army east of Boguchar.

Ivan Bagramyan of 1st Guards Army (cavalry) has been promoted to General Armii.

Several senior officers of the VVS have returned from a top secret visit to England intended to learn the lessons of how the Luftwaffe failed to defeat the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The learnings from this visit set the agenda for immediate future planning of air operations against the Luftwaffe. Once fair weather returns, German airbases will be located and subjected to relentless pounding by hundreds of sturmovik ground attack aircraft. The German "experten" fighter pilots will be ground down and their eventual replacements will be unable to cope with the size of formations sent against them and increasing skill of VVS pilots. There will be no bombing of a capital city to deflect the VVS from the primary goal of obliterating the front line strength of the Luftwaffe and ensure total air superiority across the entire front before the end of summer.

63rd Army commander, General-Maior Fyodor Tolbukhin, was promoted to General-Leitenant as a result of his fine performance in multiple actions west of Stalingrad.

Aleksandr Vasilevsky’s 34th Army (cavalry) was awarded the new title of 3rd Guards Army.

Nikolai Vatutin’s 39th Army of the Voronezh Front was renamed 4th Guards Army.

The Leningrad Front is reestablishing defensive lines in the wake of the obvious withdrawal of German mobile divisions in the area.

The Transcaucasus Front begins a cautious return to the Rostov area as the River Don will soon begin to thaw.

8-14 April 1943 (95th week of the war)

On 9 April 1943, 3rd Guards Army commander, General-Polkovnik Aleksandr Vasilevsky, was promoted to General Armii. Three days later came the decision from Stalin that many had been expecting; Marshal Voroshilov was dismissed as Chief of the General Staff. Voroshilov was thanked by Stalin for his loyal service to the state and Red Army these many months, but it was time for a change in leadership. His replacement was to be Vasilevsky. On 14 April, Colonel General Antonov was ordered from Southern Front headquarters to Moscow and appointed by Vasilevsky as Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Operations.

1st Shock Army commander, General-Leitenant Leonid V. Bobkin, was promoted to General-Polkovnik.

Ivan Chistyakov’s 40th Army was awarded the new title of 5th Guards Army.

You are still facing an amazingly well manned Axis Army.....Gonna be a super tough 1943 I think.

Also take it your having alot of supply issues with only 50% armaments production going. Interesting difference between this game and me and Pelton- as I have no manpower and have had none in the pool for basically all of 1942 but at the same time Im facing around 600-700k less Axis troops in total.

On week 67, late September 42, industrial production took its largest piece of the supply pool.

supplies produced this week: 88,500 tons

arms used: 22,035 tons
ground elements used: 15,109 tons
air used: 12,082 tons
vehicles used: 3,345 tons

total used: 52,571 tons or 59.4%

That just isn't sustainable over the long term. Fort building took another 6,535 tons. Vehicle production needed to stay at 100%. There is no point manipulating aircraft #s through the Production screen as they can be controlled almost exclusively by moving the factories around by rail and there will never be a shortage of aircraft in general. Ground elements is hard to reduce because the game engine loves to consume Soviet tanks in battle. That left arms to manipulate and I have plenty of factories. Gradually as 1943 progresses, arms can be stepped back up in increments as needed.

Overall my target goal is now that industrial production not exceed 40% of supplies produced in a given week. That will allow the army to be fed and equipped up to somewhere between 8.5 and 9 million men. That of course assumes the truck fleet holds up because supplies are of limited value to the army without a distribution system.

maybe just my games, but I tend to find that arms points as such become less important as the game progresses into 1943. In part, you tend not to be raising new too many new support units and your ToEs stabilise (especially in terms of demanding new elements). So the main user is your choice of building new on-map units (mech or artillery most likely).

usually you can hold off a turn or so, if you need to conserve arms pts but arms pts can become pretty low priority in terms of supply allocation in production.

agree about using the trick of moving aircraft factories to control that aspect. You need the fighters/Il2s to be produced as quick as possible and can always use LL for your level bombers ... and even that depends on whether you need them (not really till you start making gains) or can afford the supply they demand.

8 April - 12 May 1943 (95th - 99th week of the war)

During early Spring both armies positioned themselves for the next phase of the war. Manpower numbers increased slightly on the German side and the number of armored vehicles increased on both. Bryansk Front had been able to remove its divisions near the Voronezh Front and was now re-established southwest of Moscow. This allowed Western Front to move south of the River Oka.

Checked my supply, and so far in my game no issues---7.8M men with a fair amount of combat and even using alot of artillery divisions the last couple turns and really not burning much more than im making. So once 1943 hits and Soviet multiplier goes up Ill be good for sure to add prolly 1M more men. Big difference is im sitting at 217 Heavy industry.

I will say the end of december the game must have did some type of major ToE/equipment change out as I have had no manpower all year and suddenly opened to T81 to having 300k men in the pool and quickly burned down all the armaments I had stockpiled over the last several turns due to lack of manpower to employ them lol.

13-19 May 1943 (100th week of the war)

The Western and Voronezh Fronts reinforced by Stavka and Moscow Military District units advance in the southwest direction. Lead elements approach to within 20 miles of Tula.

4th Shock Army rolls into the city of Tambov, abandoned by Fascist troops.

In the area near Boguchar, it is clear that the Germans intend to defend this area. Numerous enemy mobile divisions intended to support their front line are identified.

Initial air attacks on Luftwaffe bases has begun. Three strikes during the week are conducted on each base in order to wear down their forces and deplete their numbers. The early results are highly successful, with several hundred enemy machines destroyed or damaged. Enemy flak defending these bases is taking their toll, but sufficient ground attack aircraft are being produced to allow for a sustained campaign.

At the evening briefings at the Kremlin this week, Generals Vasilevsky and Antonov are able to report to Comrade Stalin that a limited breakthrough has been effected by Red Army troops west of Moscow. 1st Tank and 41st (cav) Armies under Generals Rotmistrov and Eremenko push through in the area of the Kalinin and Northwest Fronts. Several enemy units are retreating and fortified zones are overrun.

In the Tula-Tambov region, multiple German tank corps are in evidence as the Voronezh and Central Fronts slowly move west.

Very strong enemy forces are clearly in evidence south of the River Don.

Another round of multiple (3) airbase strikes yields positive results.
