Hi, everyone, I was playing allies in the guadalcanal scenario, my recon planes find a large group of AKs and TKs in Rabaul, and there were only 3 fighters there, so I sent 42 level bombers including B-17s and B-26s to launch a strike, the result was two Cls heavily damaged and certain small vessels injured, but my air group suffered a heavy losses as the enemy actually had over than 20 A6M2s there. So my question is how to reduce the bombers' loss under this circumstances? My current fighters like kittyhawk and P-39Ds are no match for zeros, sending them to be escorts sounds scaring.

If you find sending escorts to be "scaring" then either don't send the bombers or accept the losses.

Only send rested B-17s with 99 morale. B-26s and CAP - a deadly combination.

You get only 15 heavy bombers a month in the first year and about the same number of mediums. In this case, it was worth it to go after the warships. Sometimes it is not worth bombing. If you do decide that there is a worthy target at an defended base then you must escort. Fighters are precious but not as precious as bombers. If you have enough fighters then sweep the base with P40s and hope they go in first. Use the P39 either as escorts or better yet LRCAP. There is an art to protecting bombers. You will get a feel for it with playing time.

Remember, the fighters you see at a base are from the last turn,s recon. You opponent probably moved in a fighter group in his planning phase. So, the rule is to always expect opposition. Good players like to bait you with a warship letting you recon it and them flying in a CAP trap in the hopes that you will go after the bait. I have fallen for that one enough.

Rabaul is a long way away too. Expect additional operational losses for damaged aircraft not being able to make it all the way back to base.

Closer targets generate lower op losses.
