The upcoming attack in Vinh.

Is it feasible to put those armoured regiments in reserve mode so they can pursue if the enemy breaks and you take Vinh?

Yes. I just don't figure on taking it with this attack and they really need to rest to recover disruption and repair tanks.

What I should have done is put them in reserve mode to 'not' pursue so they would recover faster, but I didn't think of it until I saw your post.

We've been lucky to have few destroyed squads at Vinh so far, but the that will change if we keep attacking with units that now need to recover large numbers of squads. Artillery bombardments will continue and we might make more armor only attacks when more tanks recover. The fresh division and regiment are about a week away on the good coast road. NW of Vinh is a different story. The supply situation has been resolved and all units will attack tomorrow. The 711th Tk Bn, which attacked alone today, has high disruption (27%) but no damaged tanks! The USA 192nd Tk Bn will arrive in hex tomorrow but too late to participate in that attack. While there will be no ground assault within Vinh tomorrow, there will be a naval bombardment by 4x heavy cruisers tonight.

A couple of IJA heavy cruisers sortied. The fleet carrier pilots abused them from 7 hexes away. CVL pilots are presumably the ones that obtained good hits from 6 hexes away. But (again presumably) CVE pilots at the same launching point delivered this gem.

• The Empire's kamikaze units slaughter our navy around Okinawa.
• Lack of the 9/44 CVE AA upgrades contributes to and make above worse.
• In the wake of kamikaze onslaught, our transports are vulnerable to the portion of the IJN that is in the Home Islands (or was just build there).

The 23rd Indian Division is still in good enough shape that all three units will attack tomorrow to try and even the score!

One of our DD TF had orders to patrol into the hex just east of Singapore. They found one potential blockade runner and a whole bunch of ASW assets that needed to be cleaned up. That heavy cruiser TF tried to get back to Singapore after a day hiding along an island coastline. The CVL pilots performed badly in the morning but redeemed themselves in the afternoon.

11th Indpt Infantry Regiment
10th Tank Regiment
22nd/B Division

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some revealing post-battle Intel. First, there are no more units in Vinh with movement arrows. Second, there are three units in the hex where two retreated to. So, one unit moved out of Vinh to the NE while all others remained. Next, the retreat hex shows two movement arrows, one to the east and one back at the victors to the west. There are no AFV seen in that hex. The troop count is 18,800. Comparing today's bombardment at Vinh with yesterday's, the 22nd Ind.Mixed Brigade is missing and must now be NE of Vinh. And it has 10,000 to 12,000 troops! Our armored units are faster and will certainly stop it from moving west and engaging our units in the same (jungle-rough) hex as today's battles. The fact that it's moving means it is not digging in and will probably lose two days that could have been spent preparing fortifications in the jungle hex NE of Vinh. The other movement arrow I interpret as the two spent Bde withdrawing to rebuild.

Obviously, then, the units in Vinh now are almost certainly meant to stay there. And we shall help them. All of our units NW of Vinh are heading east at full speed, except for the TD unit which is heading SE into Vinh to flip the hex side. It should be about 5 days before the additional infantry arrives in Vinh from the south.

Dili is captured secured.

The Dutch squadron is quite beat up after their many runs back to Kendari to rearm for shore bombardments every other day. They will head for Saigon to refit.

Many Imperial have seemed to disappear from bases under aerial recon in the Philippines and China. Where have they gone? There are no fighters at Chungking but rain is predicted so the HI will be left for a better day. Although rain is forecast at the B-29 base at Moulmein, Singapore should enjoy somewhat better weather. The Superfortresses are order up to 15,000 feet to hit Singapore port areas again. 1 fighter is expected in opposition.

Many disabled squads. One day to rest and gather supply, then the three units will bombard for a while with their great complements of organic artillery. Supply is an issue for our units up there so we will play things by ear.

The B-29 groups at Moulmein did not fly against Singapore, likely the poor weather in both places. There are now some fighters at Chungking, but only a dozen and 28 guns. The B-29 are ordered to go after the Heavy Industry there are 10,000 ft. Fighters have shown up again at a number of bases, although some have fewer than before. Perhaps a large scale reshuffling just took place?

The accidental encounter with our depleted destroyers allowed Tone to make good use of her 8 inch guns. While those DD continue to withdraw for replenishment, Burke's DD move eastward to gain fighter protection from the CVL. One of Burke's destroyers, hit by a kamikaze, is heading back to Saigon. Those Sallys did not come from Singapore so we will have to pick up recon of nearby bases as resources allow.

The last ship, a PB, at Soerabaja has been sunk. Those B-24 groups will stand down and refit while new airfields are readied for them. D-Day for Ulithi is tomorrow. Only 820 men and 24 guns are seen by aerial recon. Two P-38 groups (different marks) made sweeps of Manila and cam out about even. Patient reduction of Ternate continues.

Our subs were not engaged.

Quiet in China.

Indomitable is in service at Bombay. She took on 33 aircraft and will pick up more at Colombo. Ground bombardment near Chiang Mai will start tomorrow and intensify the day after.

The B-29 groups out of Moulmein lost 3 of their number in the strikes on Chungking HI but scored several dozen hits. Additional days of recon will tell what's left. All but one group (with higher fatigue) will hit Changsha HI tomorrow, where heavier aerial opposition is expected. There are also twice as many guns (111) so altitude will be 12,000 ft.

Some of our armor did block the westward IJA movement north of Vinh.It will be 3 days before the infantry divisions arrive. We are also moving most of the armor from Vinh through the newly opened NW Vinh hex side so the assault to the NE of Vinh will have maximum firepower. Another artillery unit, equipped only with 105 mm, arrived at Vinh today.

Once that position is retreated Vinh will be isolated and the armor and infantry divisions will move into Vinh. They, the additional infantry that will arrive in four days and the units still in Vinh will then reduce the defenders ASAP. That will allow several more divisions to strategic move into Vinh and bring larger forces to the Hanoi/Haiphong area more quickly overall. Getting there even more quickly, but with smaller forces, is no longer an objective because recon shows that enemy positions have built up a great deal.

Ulithi was taken.

How difficult is supplying the army in Indochina? Do you need to bring much across from Borneo or can you get It from Burma. I should
have paid closer attention to wargamer when he strode through here.

It's actually fairly tough. Partly the ground troops, partly the air complement. Supply flow from the Burma coast is meager. In fact, most of the supply for the SEAC forces around Bangkok came from SWPac's depots at Cam Ranh Bay. I've got a whole mess of engineers shipping to Victoria Point with more to follow to max out that port before they move on. Supply is flowing out of there to Chumphon (instigated by supply draw) and from there to Bangkok (SEAC HQ just finished air transporting there from the coast) for distribution. I'm hoping that with massive infusions of supply via the port at Victoria Point I can take the pressure off of the US->Manado->Cam Ranh Bay SLOC. I had been hoping to have built up more supply in the Marianas before the invasions staging from there kick off, but I've had to keep the aforementioned pipeline full of product.

This is one of the examples where Babes C 33% reduction in cargo carrying capacity does make a difference to the Allies. No, they are not going to fall back to North America and India for lack of cargo capacity, but maintaining momentum is definitely made more difficult. Deliciously so, of course!

I thought it could be a tough situation with supply...where's my manual?.....
I can supply large forces in the jungle in central Burma quite easily, but have to keep
flying supplies into another, one hex from a well stocked base. Man, I have to do some
more reading tonight.

Quiet in China. Except for the daily air raid on our troops 2 hexes NE of Tsuyung. Those raids began when the Empire's Eye spied them moving through the mountain passes to harass the Imperial flank. After suffering many air strikes (today by 22x Ki-49-IIb Helen), tomorrow we will have up to 16 Thunderbolt I and 25 P-51B fly LRCAP out of Tsuyung, the first aircraft to operate from that runway in many months.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enemy units there have spread out in an inconvenient way, creating a mismatch just east of Chiang Mai. That does give us clearance to attack in two other hexes, those actions ordered for tomorrow.

The B-29 raid on Changsha was too costly for the results achieved. The first, large, strike went well. Later, smaller strikes paid a heavy price. We lost 17x B-29 on the day.

Our pursuit/encirclement near Vinh continues. A few more days until our next ground attacks. Most likely at Vinh our next attack will be in four days, and NE of Vinh our first attack will be in either three or four days. We might attack NE of Vinh first, then concentrate in Vinh before attacking (as previously mentioned).

Reduction of Ternate continues, as does the liberation of small, abandoned bases in the eastern DEI.

Indochina.

Ouch, 17 B29 in a single day. You did cause quite some damage from what the recon shows, but...

How are your 4E bombers pools?

Aside from that I'm curious. Is that task force at Hue going to bombard Vinh?

Not so much damage for the cost, I'm afraid...

USA 4EB pools are basically being kept empty. It's a combination of running the B-24 and B-17 models daily for the most part (a few groups that finished up their task on Java are resting) and having brought many new pilots into them. I pull the best for the B-29 slots, and while those beasties don't fly nearly as often they do get the toughest targets on average. I'm pretty sure that the Empire's A-Teams are on duty because the B-29 started to make dents in things. No more saving them for later!

That TF at Vinh is the same 4x CA TF that has bombarded before. Trouble is I am keeping AKE back where I feel safety is good enough so the TF has to go back to CRB to rearm. So, I am now saving it for the next attack at Vinh. It's not spotted and has lots of fighters there are Hue.

BTW, Hue airfield will be size 9 in less than a week.

But now there is at least one Imperial unit moving NE out of Vinh. So, the 4x CA TF at Hue will bombard tonight in an effort to thwart movement by disrupting moving units. The USA 81st ID might arrive tomorrow (from the SE) but the next day for certain, along with the 124th Cavalry Rgt that is two days out. NE of Vinh we have three USA Tk Bns and the two infantry divisions (1x Aus and 1x USA) will arrive tomorrow. Those five units will attack at once (day after tomorrow), without waiting for the additional armor that is two days out.

We got about 10 LI hits at Batavia on 5 LI remaining, but 5 still remain. Hitting the 5 undamaged LI scattered among the 76 damaged LI is proving to be difficult as in at the tail end of the bell curve.

Indochina.
