1) Other than price, what are the advantages of buying CMANO and/or NI on Steam instead of Matrix? What are the disadvantages? With the current sale on Steam it's a savings of $60CDN for the two but I have no experience on Steam and I'm looking for some advice.

2) If I buy NI (Matrix version) now and decide at a later date to upgrade to the full CMANO (Matrix version) is the upgrade cost whatever the current full price of CMANO is at that time or will there be some discount on the upgrade?

Steam is great, but the developers and publishers get less of a cut, then buying it from the source. But that's between them on how the cuts work.

There are no advantages/disadvantages. The CMANO content will be absolutely the same.

If you don't use steam, you will have the disadvantage to have to download and install the steam client first if you want to buy and play via steam.
If you are already a steam user and like to run it because you run other applications there, you will have the advantage that you can buy, download and play CMANO right in your steam client and also the client will download and install all future patches automatically (if configured to do so).

It is really only a question of convenience, nothing else.

1) The only differences I find between buying from Matrix or from Steam are that you need to play your Steam's Command with their client open (it doesn't mean online; you can play offline with no problems). On the other hand, Steam refund policy will allow you to get a refund if you don't like the game after playing it no more than 2 hours. It's like a demo to the real game, and useful for people whose PCs are not up to the game in question. I don't think it'll be the case in Command either way.

Personally, when there's no relevant price differences, I buy from Matrix and play with Steam. I always prefer to buy from Matrix as I think it's more rewarding for developers (and for an unique publisher nowadays), and as far as they provide you also a Steam key... it's a win-win situation. And I got used to play with my Steam game (mostly offline).

2) I don't know, but I guess you won't have a discount on CMANO, as CMANO owners haven't got a discount on Northern Inferno either (17� is a good price anyway).

The Steam refund policy seems pretty good - I bought CMANO at 6pm yesterday, played it for three hours, and bought NI at midnight. I then noticed I could have bought them together and saved �6. I asked for a refund and, despite having played 3 hours, and outright saying I just wanted to take advantage of the new sale, I got my refund.

However, whenever prices are similar and you also get a Steam key, I'd say buy from the developer - they get more of a cut, and you then have a choice of using Steam or not.

For the convenience, I prefer Steam, but having the 'developer copy' is a bit like a failsafe in case something goes wrong with Steam. I like to get both 'versions', just in case.

The game itself (in CMANO's case) is the same, so in terms of actually playing it, there's no difference. The difference lies in price, convenience, and the amount of money the developers/publishers get.

On Steam right now, I can buy both for under 70 dollars, but on Matrix the best I can do is 78? Is the package discount not available on Matrix, or would it get applied during the sales process?

Thank you all for your replies. Now that Matrix is running their own sale the price difference is down to around $20 so I'm going to buy the Matrix version of CMANO & NI. I can always use Steam after that if I want to.

Now, I've seen some posts about problems installing so I just want to make sure I have the correct process for when I buy the games tonight.

After purchase I should receive a download link and 2 serial numbers (one for CMANO & one for NI). I then run the installer and input both serial numbers when requested. That should install both the base game and NI on my computer. Once these are installed I go to the developers site and d/l the files for the community scenarios, the overlays for the community scenarios and the database images & descriptions. These files get unzipped and placed into the correct folders as per the directions.

After that I should be good, correct?

What about the databases? I understand that there should be two. Are the most current versions of these included in the d/l from Matrix?

Sounds right to me, rjantzi, and also use those serial numbers from Matrix in Steam (from top of client: Games>Activate a product on Steam) to get that version setup if you wish.
Databases should all be in d/l.

Thanks Casinn. The d/l took a long time and needed a few re-starts. Hopefully that's an indication that sales are strong. Anyways, after I got the files downloaded everything with the installation went smoothly. I have one setup of CMANO on my hard drive and it includes all of the NI files. I can run NI as a Campaign or as separate scenarios. All of the community info seems to be in place. Now the learning begins.
