Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea plus Rabaul and Solomon Sea area.

No reported Japanese plane losses this game turn within SW Pacific theatre area.

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 1 F6F Hellcat (ops)
• 1 B-25D1 Mitchell (air-to-air)

All returning amphibious transport ships from the Buna supply operation now in the Coral Sea area south of New Guinea beyond range of likely Japanese air attack. One LST (LST-43) severely damaged in last game turn’s Jap naval air strikes sank near Deboyne Islands as a result of damage levels. A second heavily damaged LST is limping southward (at 2 kts) along the northern New Guinea coast near Milne Bay and moving independently to Port Moresby. LRCAP fighter coverage from Port Moresby is covering this LST – if the second LST cannot be saved, at the least it will be a useful decoy for Jap LBA bombers.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – port damage 65, 1 Jap TF (1 ship, visible on map as submarine TF), 19 Jap LCU.

Detected base status at Wau – unidentified Jap aircraft visible at airfield, 10 Jap LCU..

Detected base status at Rabaul – 237 aircraft (98 fighters, 11 bombers), 9 Jap TF (51 ships total, mainly small ship types), 5 ships in port (including 1 SS, 1 DD, 1 APD, 2 E), 37 Jap LCU.

Allied ground forces at Buna have 195K supply on hand, 2067 AV (total) operational. Ground bombardment attacks by Allied forces continue. While recovery of total Allied AV at Buna slowly continues, three of six Allied infantry divisions at Buna (US 32, 43 and Americal) still have large numbers of disabled infantry elements with recovery in these units proceeding very slowly compared to other units. My current estimate is that it is unlikely total AV of Allied LCU currently at Buna will recover to numbers going into the last Allied deliberate attack on 8/12 without reinforcements.

All three US divisions mentioned above (32, 43, Americal) have intact and operational support and artillery components but few operational infantry squads. Americal Division had a considerable number of destroyed infantry elements in the 8/12 deliberate ground attack, this division now having only 62 infantry squads (half of these disabled) out of a full TOE strength of 273. The interesting thing about the three "burned out" divisions above vs the three Allied divisions still fully operational at Buna (9 Australian, 1 US Marine, 1 US Cavalry) is that all six divisions at Buna have basically the same supply, experience, disruption and fatigue levels, commanders assigned to the six units with relatively equal ratings. Go figure… Latest AAR follows.

Australia: Shipyard repair completed for Escort Carrier force CVE with heavier damage from action in the 7/44 Terapo supply operation, these ships now rejoining the Escort force. Two of 6 Escort Carrier force TF’s were available for the just-completed Buna supply operation. A third Escort Carrier force TF was re-formed this game turn with repaired CVE ships, with one additional TF due to form next turn. The two remaining Escort Carrier force TF are scheduled to re-form with CVE ships arriving from mainland US as reinforcements with transport convoy WX-16 due to reach Australia shortly.

First TF with damaged amphibious transport ships from the Buna operation arrived this game turn at Australian bases, disbanded and ships entering repair.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 28 aircraft (12 fighters, 16 bombers), 1 Jap TF (6 ships including 1 TK, 3 AO, 1 CS), 11 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

Another 8/27 Sigint entry indicates Jap 4 Mortar Bn now located at hex location 57, 44 in jungle area near Burma-India border opposite Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. The possibility cannot be ignored that other Japanese combat LCU are in this hex with 4 Mortar Bn. Counter-movements by parts of III Indian Corps at Chittagong to cover hexes along the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar road are underway.

A third 8/27 Sigint entry indicates elements of Jap 3rd Guards Infantry Division are enroute to Rangoon via sea transport.

Summary of Operations 8/28/44 (continued)

Japanese Home Islands: Sigint entry for 8/28 reports Jap 68 Infantry Brigade now located on Uruppu-jima. Previous reported location of 68 Brigade was Port Arthur. If true, this report indicates Pillager is reinforcing Jap positions in the Kurile Islands area opposite the Aleutians. I’ve been gradually developing US base positions in the Aleutians though no large-scale positioning of Allied ground or air forces in the Aleutians has been done to date. Fully expanded US base positions in the Aleutians are currently pushed westward to Agattu and Shemya islands (adjacent hexes E and SE of Attu). No current plans are in place or underway to launch Allied offensive operations from the North Pacific although fully expanded and developed base and logistical facilities in North Pacific theatre area are in place to support operations if this strategic option is necessary or desirable.

Australia: Transport convoy WX-15 (25 ships) arrives from US West Coast. Cargo aboard the convoy includes US 96th Infantry Division, 97K supply and 42K fuel.

Transport convoy EX-82 (20 ships) arrives from Eastern US via Capetown, cargo includes 104K supply and 1200 fuel. Smaller xAK with cargo capacity < 4000 in convoys EX-82 and EX-81 (currently unloading in Australia) are being detached to remain in Australia for use with in-theatre sea transport operations in SW and South Pacific theatre areas.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 44 aircraft (25 fighters, 19 bombers), 1 Jap TF (6 ships including 2 TK, 4 AO), 11 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 225 aircraft (208 fighters, 11 bombers), oil production 198(103), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

Known or probable Japanese aerial recon activity over Chittagong, Akyab and Imphal reported in 8/28 Operations report entries.

Sigint entry for 8/28 reports Jap 35th Infantry Division also located at hex location 57, 44 in jungle area near Burma-India border opposite Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, this hex the same location where Jap 4 Mortar Bn was reported last game turn.

Summary of Operations 8/30/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Two 8/30 Sigint entries report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Maleolap, detected status of the base shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 70 aircraft (40 fighters, 30 bombers), no Jap TF, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

Known or probable Japanese aerial recon activity continues over Chittagong and, Akyab, reported in 8/30 Operations report entries.

Ceylon: Japanese carrier strikes on Colombo. Jap air strikes hit port and base facilities in Colombo, plus naval strikes on ships in transport convoy MD-35 (15 small xAK, 1 AO) from Abadan unloading fuel cargo in Colombo this game turn. All ships in convoy MD-35 sunk in the Jap air strikes. Japanese air strikes also hit ships Colombo port, sinking one British SS. Damaged ships in Colombo include 5 SS (all moderate damage), 2 DE (both moderate damage), 2 AR (light to moderate damage).Shipyard facilties in Colombo also damaged (30-35%), current capacity reduced to 27 from 40.

Japanese carrier forces launching this attack include 7 CV (identified as Junyo, Taiho, Kasagi, Amagi, Unryu, Ikoma and Aso) and 2 CVL (identified as Chitose and Ibuki) in four TF – visible on map at hex location 32, 54 (SE of Colombo). This appears likely to be a “detachment” of the KB rather than a “mini KB” or the full KB itself. The size and composition of this Japanese carrier force is significant in that it’s large enough in terms of both ships and aircraft quantity to handle any British surface naval or carrier force I can currently assemble from my available ships. That is the bad news… The other side of this story being there are 7 Jap CV and 2 CVL not in the Pacific, particularly if Pillager can be “persuaded” to maintain a Japanese carrier force in the Indian Ocean area.

Reported Japanese aircraft losses in the Colombo action is 109 planes total. Allied fighter CAP in Colombo opposing the raid included four squadrons engaged in “Level 3” CAP training – pilots in these squadrons with 70 air and strafing skill level, 50-65 experience (most at or near 60+) – total Allied losses over Colombo 37 fighter planes. All in all my Allied training pilots acquitted themselves rather well. Summary of reported aircraft losses at Colombo follows.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 39 A6M5 Zero (31 air-to-air, 8 ops),
• 44 B6N2 Jill (35 air-to-air, 8 flak, 1 ops)
• 26 D4Y Judy (14 air-to-air, 12 flak)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 17 Kittyhawk IV (13 air-to-air, 4 ops) – New Zealand planes operating in FAA
• 12 Corsair II (6 air-to-air, 6 ops)
• 8 Hurricane IIb Trop (5 air-to-air, 3 ops)

End results of this development considerably affects Allied naval strategy in the Indian Ocean area at least short-term, possibly beyond. Available British naval forces in the Indian Ocean area (3 CV, a small number of CVL/CVE, 4 BB, 2 BC plus cruisers and DD) are insufficient to significantly challenge Pillager’s Jap naval forces. An overall Allied short-term strategy under consideration for Southeast Asia theatre (land/air) and Indian Ocean area (sea) could be a form of “smoke and mirrors” where build up activity for Allied offensive operations continues although there is little (current) possibility of an effective Allied strategic offensive in this part of the world. Under this scenario, British naval forces in the Indian Ocean will operate largely as a fleet in being. On land, my available intelligence OOB data on Japanese LCU in Burma indicates Pillager has heavily reinforced this theatre to where an Allied ground offensive from NE India with currently available LCU would in probability be easily stopped or considerably delayed with significant losses.

My present view leans more toward inducing Pillager to maintain or reinforce Japanese forces in the Southeast Asia/Indian Ocean area rather than divert US forces from the Pacific into this region. Pillager already made the decision to divide Japanese forces (carriers being a key part), a possible motivation being to draw my (Allied) attention from the Pacific theatres. A long term solution may be exploiting Pillager’s diversion of Japanese forces (land, naval or air) away from the Pacific rather than response to his current Japanese moves. AAR’s follow.

Effect of Pillager’s carrier raid on Colombo disrupts Allied transport convoy traffic off India, including several convoys now in transit. Convoy CD-78 (12 ships) with supply cargo is scheduled to arrive in Calcutta (from Capetown) next game turn – this convoy to be held in Calcutta after unloading. Convoy MD-36 (15 ships) from Aden with LCU and supply cargo approaching Colombo has been diverted to Bombay for unloading. .

The Big Picture #16 – Game turn #1000

AAR for the next game turn (below) is the 1000th turn of this campaign. Pillager and I are not the first to reach this milestone though many campaigns (both in and outside the forums) never reach this point – either the outcome being decided well before this time or one or both players “burning out”. Nonetheless it’s been a long road from May 2010 when we started this.

Perhaps what could ultimately be the decisive factor in this campaign is the fall of China. Having done that, Pillager acquired a considerable part of the IJ army to redeploy from China to reinforce defensive positions most likely to be in the direct path of an Allied advance. PP cost to do this being a relatively minor detail. The current action at Buna is a huge result of this.

Victory in this campaign can still go either way. Trench warfare in the Pacific or Burma not being the path to an Allied victory. Buna and eastern New Guinea likely represents only the first Japanese trench line Pillager has been able to construct. My intelligence data indicating the Marianas island chain through Babeldaob as Pillager’s next major Japanese position – all major bases and some smaller ones with significant LCU garrisons and ample time to fortify them. A veritable Japanese Maginot Line. Although Herr Guderian found his way around the one in France…

Regardless of the outcome… the end game of our campaign is a hands-on opportunity for me to pick up and use late-war Allied forces and hardware plus experience of things available to JFB’s (i.e. Kamikazes) from the receiving end. This opportunity available only when one reaches the late stages of a campaign. Downfall scenario gives you a feel of 1945 but not the complete picture a full campaign provides. Valuable experience for next time, either as an Allied player again or in the event I defect to the other side.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea plus Rabaul.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 98 Ki-84 Frank (96 air-to-air, 2 ops)
• 25 N1K1-J George (23 air-to-air, 2 ops)
• 3 Ki-61 Tony (2 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 2 Ki-44 Tojo (both air-to-air)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 14 P-47 Thunderbolt (11 air-to-air, 3 ops)

USAAF fighter sweep targets Lae. It’s possible a difference in Allied vs Japanese pilot quality (experience) is starting to become a factor in aerial combat with IJA land-based fighters. Given Pillager may be producing more aircraft in Japanese industry than Allied aircraft I'm receiving in my fixed production rates, it seems the most productive method of attrition of Japanese air forces in AE is killing off trained pilots. In one way, this is historical. Looking at it from inside AE, it's likely that many JFB's can produce more planes in Japanese industry than the fixed Allied production/replacement rates provided they (JFB's) are properly operating Jap industry. AAR’s follow.

Unidentified Jap LCU detected and visible on game map at hex location 56, 43 (E of Cox’s Bazar). This and similar reports indicate Pillager is moving Japanese ground forces into positions into southern areas along the Burma-India border opposite Akyab to Chittagong. Whether the Japanese build-up is offensive or defensive in nature cannot be determined at this time from available information. At the very least, Pillager is aware of an Allied buildup in NE India and is taking measures to (1) disrupt or stop progress of the Allied build-up, and either (2) meet an Allied ground offensive using favorable defensive terrain on the India-Burma border or (3) launch a pre-emptive Japanese ground offensive into NE India with (probably) a limited set of objectives.
