Since upgrading to windows 10 I've noticed that the response to mouse clicking gets slower after every turn. Is anyone else experiencing this?

This is common in the game, easily cured by saving, exiting the game completely, then restarting the game.

My own perception is that the game engine is based on old database behaviour where changes made to the database are saved in RAM until you exit the game and the RAM is cleared. It also seems like every time you click on a base or unit and call up the info for it, that gets stored in RAM too. Then add the changes that take place when you run the turn and the engine executes all the orders given and resolves battles.

Once RAM is full, the computer has to swap info between the RAM and the hard drive every time you click on something new. Clearing the RAM by closing the game gets the speed back for a while.

My explanation may be incorrect because I am not a programmer - I just recall what using the first PCs and database programs was like - but the pattern seems to fit so I use that as my model for what may be going on. The solution is known to work, so use it! No Charge!

The game engine does not use any old database code. Slow downs and graphic glitches are usually problems with DirectX and multi-core computers. The game uses some old DirectX calls that don't work that well with multiple cores. Some modern video cards can also mess up with these DirectX calls. We provide an array of command line switches because the interactions between Windows, DirectX, and a particular hardware mix is very variable.

If the computer's RAM is small, you may see some slow downs. I wouldn't try running the game without 2 GB or RAM and would use 4 GB if possible. If the RAM is sufficient and you're still seeing slow behavior, it's almost certainly a DirectX problem.

Thanks for the correction Bill! Sounds like I should try the single core switch or experiment with others.
