I think that is really the key. His airborne drops were aborted/defeated and he's never had good interdiction levels over northern France. I was able to pretty freely move reinforcements up to the line in Normandy. In the previous game with roles reversed, I know I had quite high interdiction values very deep into France. He had complained a lot about not being able to move units that were anywhere near the front. I did a pretty good job of keeping that up all the way to Berlin, although obviously with a much broader front they weren't always as high as just after the invasion.

Losing the airborne drops was also a key I think as it left him for quite a while with no room to bring in reinforcements to the beach head. Until he was able to pry his way on his right and take the end of the peninsula he was bottled up. Having even 2 or 3 extra hexes that the airborne troops take is key.

The invasion I did in Holland when I was the Allies had 5 airborne divisions and 4 beach hexes so I had an extensive footprint right off and was able to reinforce the beach. It took only about 3 turns to have a full Army PLUS the Airborne Army ashore. Again done under heavy air cover, even considering the not great weather (I forced them to fly anyway - too important to have then sit at home because of a little rain :-) )

Right now I'm anticipating some secondary invasion in the north somewhere. There must be a lot of units sitting in England looking for something to do right now. But I've been able to create a reserve to handle that, as long as I can get to wherever it is quickly enough. The Russians will eventually reach Berlin, but it will be interesting to see where I hold out agains the Allies.

Jan 16, 1945. No change in the front lines at all. Both sides huddles in their fortifications, while there was some limited bombing of the front lines. Other than that, no activity at all.

VP are -735 I think it was.

Meanwhile it hasn't stopped snowing for what - 5 weeks now?

End of January, '45

Recon and interdiction flights over the front lines (not that anyone is moving - snow, snow and more snow). Several cities were bombed. The Luftwaffe managed to shoot down a decent number of Allied bombers and damage was minimal (probably more due to the bad weather than anything else).

The front lines have still not changed. It's like WW1 out there. The units in Normandy and in Italy have been in the same positions for many months now.

The Russians are doing all the work and will reach Berlin probably before the Allies reach Paris.

Feb 16th, 45, Turn 37

Snow this week. Forecast for more next week. Everyone is hunkered down. The Russians must think the Allies are a bunch of wimps :-)

Some city bombing but not enough to cause serious damage.

Victory points as of now -782

Maybe maybe not. The US spirited out a bunch of scientists working on nuclear weapons at the end of the war. Extend it past mid-45 and who knows.........

The US at the time only had enough material for one more weapon. Of course at the end of the war Germany didn't have enough for any

Feb 20, '45. Allies are still penned in the Cotentin and the line in Italy is static. Snow continues over northern Europe. However, it appears that the Russians are advancing quickly on Berlin.

VP total is at -839. I've posted below the territory ownership showing the Russian advance, interdiction levels and rail damage. The German rail network is largely intact and supplies flow to the front. I've had no trouble keeping my front line units up to strength or moving units around.

It appears I need to move the capitol of Germany to Brussels maybe. It would be an odd world - the Russians take most of Germany, while the Germans keep France, Belgium, Holland and northern Italy.

I am on 1.01.04. Don't know what Scott is running. We had a problem a while back with beta mismatch making the map disappear so I haven't changed this installation since then. When did the bug you reference appear?

Can you point me to where that is discussed? I'm looking in the development forums and don't see it. Thanks.

Not sure about the dev forum.

I have also had the air exec. report bug- where you can only see 2 days of the air report.

As wrote in the thread fix is not released with public beta and neither on dev beta. Will fixed in 1.01.13+.

I wouldn't overestimate this bug as it has working workarounds.

Don't want to hijack a thread. There is many things I'd do different with air units. I'd say lack of GS and unit bombing is most visible. Also you should watch what your enemy does. There is not so many intercepts in Italy, so you can easily switch your FB from fighter to bomber roles. Disruption is a king of battlefield.

The situation is self generated and not due to any bug ..... unless there is a play bug .... one that limits attention to detail, impatience and a general lack of understanding as to the particulars as to the air rules ... I've played/play many games, still struggling getting my arms around this one .... to Dave's benefit ... That and his sound play ....

This most recent turn looked like there was a lot more bombing of rail yards going on in spite of the endless snow.

It's Feb 27th BTW. Situation unchanged. Still snowing. Allies bombed the rail yards in Abbeville, Brussels, Antwerp, all around Paris, and a couple places closer to the front. We are scurrying around repairing the damage.

It's Turn 41, 6 March, 1945. Russians are advancing on Berlin. Western Allies stuck in Normandy and it's still snowing.
The war will soon be over when the Russians take Berlin. Victory points have edged over into the Axis Major Victory category.

This week's item of interest was a massive bombing campaign of all of Paris and it's suburbs. See the trail of air battles in the picture below:
