I have come back again to game and having a hard time figuring out about upgrading bases; I like to put arms, shields & plating on all mining, research, et al. I thought maybe it was a bug in last mod I was using, but same happening in another.

Basically, I have upgraded both gas and regular mining bases to include shields&armanents, but I can not figure out why my gas one have no shields fired up, but mining does?? I have looked & and looked, but for the life of me I can't see the difference, as to why one has shields and the other doesn't. there is enough power. I missed that a couple of times. What is puzzling is that the gas ones say they are the latest designs.

Also, how I tell constructors to only build latest desighns?? I have to constantly go behind them and manually hit upgrade button.

Thanks,

jmk

You need to post a pic or a save for the shield problem.

Happened to me. Constructors build the first one in the list provided they are not marked as obsolete.

Yeah, many times to get the AI to build the "newer" stuff you have to build it yourself. As long as the original ship isn't obsolete that is the one it will build. But, it will upgrade them to a better ship albeit probably not the one you want. I've never seen so many crappy upgrades in my life on all the ships. I don't think the dev played it or even tried to make an effort for more quality good ships per researched item. He just put willy nilly and the most common upgrades but if you want the good ones you'll have to design them yourself and then build them yourself in most cases.

There's usually a fair amount of lag-time before the AI auto-retrofits begin after a new design is made, not to mention the time needed for freighters to ferry the resources from the nearest port. I don't think it's based on earliest structures first either, as I've had first/second system bases get stuck with resource storages for years whilst upgrading whereas the latest constructions were often the first to complete retrofits.

For your gas miners I'm not sure as to what is the problem, since there could be many. If you design them yourself there is reason to belive there might be something to do with your design. Remember to check how much fueltanks they have, energy collectors and Excess energy from reactors.

When it comes to Constructors not building latest design is most likely because the build order was qued before the upgraded design existed. for example: If I tell my constructor to build 2 mining bases, he will build the latest design available at the time I told him to do so. Even if i upgrade the designs afterwards, he will not build the new design unless i tell him otherwise. Like stopping him and giving him the order again.
Same thing goes for ship building. When it comes to civillian ship retrofitting, they will do so when they are idle and have the money and resources.

Personally I will recommend taking total control of the designs you deem most important to you in order to keep certain bases and ships up to par when you want and by the spec you require.

And on a further note, if you are having problems with resources not being transported where you need them, that is a good indicator that you are expanding faster then your civillian economy can handle. Most common mistake is to create too many colonies at once, since they demand a lot of attention by your freighters at first. second is building too many shipyards, since they also have a high priority on cargo.
