Is there anywere explatoins for those abbreviations in this Forum, its iritaiting me for not understanding what they are saying in those threads. :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

Is it possible to make a link for Abbreviations so odinary readers chould fill in with the newest Abbreviations.

For exampel CC (doese it mean command control) or BB (doese it mean beautiful butrefly) and so on. there are comming new all the time.

Is it possible to make a link for ALL abbreviations so ordinary readers could fill in with the newest abbreviations. It would help alot us veterans. And more important is that rookies would feel more welcome.

CC is usually shorthand for Command & Control. Some people use BB as code for Battleship. I am not sure why they use two B's. Maybe it is for Battleship Bombardment? BA Evans

BB for battleship, CG for Cruiser, CV for aircraft carrier, FF for frigate SN for Nuc sub SB for Ballistic sub, etc.

BB could be bulletin board too. Boz: I thought CA was cruiser (heavy cruiser), CL was light cruiser. Does the 'A' actually mean 'heavy'? Then why an 'A', why not an 'H'? [ April 24, 2001: Message edited by: Charles_22 ]

CC is probably the worst one for confusion - many people mean Close Combat, especially on the Combat Leader forum. I try to use C&C for Command and Control. So will CL have C&C like CC? :)

CG is guided missile cruiser, like FFG and DDG is guided missile frigate and destroyer respectively.

These abbreviations must've been invented by some bureaucrat... okay..BB is for battleship, CVB for large fleet carrier, CB is large cruiser. My guess is that first 1 or 2 letters are the main class and the second a subclass. So BB = Battleship, battle. CVB = Carrier Vessel? Battle and CB = Cruiser, Battle CA, the cruiser could be Cruiser, Armoured as such ship class was in use around WW1. CL = Cruiser, Light PG, gunboat = Patrol, Gun. PGM, motor gunboat = Patrol, Gun, Motor. PF, frigate = Patrol, Frigate. The above meanings are just my guesses though the abbreviations themselves are taken from Jane's fighting ships of WW2..the current abbrevs differ somewhat as the ships have gotten new tasks. From what I've read, the second letter in BB, DD etc. doesn't stand for anything. The Navy standardized on 2 letter designations so the old one letter designations just got repeated. By the way, CV originally stood for Cruiser, aViation (CA was already used for Cruiser, Armored). I've never heard of a CVB, though I've heard of CVE (Escort) and CVN (Nuclear powered).

New designations for US Navy carriers were established on July 15, 1943 which limited the previous broadly applied CV designation to Saratoga, Enterprise, and carriers of the Essex class; added CVB (Aircraft Carriers, Large) for the 45,000-ton class being built and CVL (Aircraft Carriers, Small) for the 10,000- ton class built on light cruiser hulls. The same directive reclassified escort carriers as combatant ships and changed their designation from ACV to CVE.

Hello all. On Warship acronyms. They where first introduced by the Royal Navy during the napolionic era, and have been evolving from that time. During the 1900's Battleships where simply classified as "B". With the Introduction of Battlecrusers (BC), Dreadnaughts (BB)and Super-dreadnaughts (BA); A second letter was added. (In WWI the Queen Elizabeth class where BA's, but after WWI evryone was left with just Super-dreadnaughts , so they all became BB's) CA originally stood for Armoured Cruiser, but the armoured cruiser effectivly dissapered as a class at the end of WWI, so the designation was used for the new Heavy cruisers. Another long extinct class is the Protected cruiser ( CP; A cruiser with little to no armour, but with anti-splinter protection & many internal sub divisions. ( this is what the post WWI heavy cruisers should have been classified as.) Destroyers where originally TBD ( Torpedo Boat Destroyers), and DD was introduced to distinglish between Coal fired TBD's and Oil fired TBD's. Frigates where originally just F but got a second F in the interwar years to bring them up to 2 letters with all the other acronyms.

I remember reading/seeing somewhere while I was in the Canadian Navy that there was a CVA in the USN, the A meaning Attack.

Mcgib: Your correct about CVA standing for attack carrier, this was a post Korea designation. The following is from my dusty yellowed dogged eared copy of my BJM (Blue Jackets Manual) circa 1944. DD....Destroyer DE....Destroyer Escort CL.....(AC)Light Cruiser CA.....Heavy Cruiser CV.....Carrier CVL....Carrier (keel laid for light crusier) CVA....Carrier (keel lais for Heavy Cruiser) CVE....Escort Carrier (keel for Liberty ship) (above also carried designation of (ACV)for a short time. Some CV's also carried a tempoary desig. of (CVB). BB.....Battle Ships PC.....Patrol craft Do not confuse the designation of WW2 CVA with the post WW2 designation. I hope this is of help to those who want to understand Naval Ship designations. The V in CV was explained to me to mean "Heavier-than-air" just as its used in Naval Aircraft Squadron designators: ie: VP (HTA Patrol)(VF HTA Fighter) as opposed to ZP (LTA Patrol, Blimps)or (HS, Heliocopter Scout)etc. Hope this helps a little to clear the 'Fog of Designations' :D :confused: PS. Desigs. in Parens are/were tempoary only. And for the Marines on board VMF stood for HTA Marine fighter squadron etc. Now no one will feel slighted. [ April 27, 2001: Message edited by: chief ]
