Thanks for the fixes in v3.04, which have resolved the main issues with the game. This is an outstanding game demonstrating the uncertainties and surprises of historical events, during the Napoleonic era, no air recon, no radio reporting, excitable and sometimes unreliable subordinates. However I think the 'Fog of War' is sometimes too thick and more information should be visible.

When your units capture enemy supply, an information window opens to say which of your units has captured XX amount of supply. I suspect that I am losing supply to enemy units, when I see supply counters disappear from the map, but it would be good to have a confirmation, especially when a town is lost with a supply depot, of just how much and where I am losing supply. If it is happening out of the displayed map area, you may not notice important supply loss. Can we have an info box for friendly supply losses ?

Enemy unit counters have no indication of unit strength under all FOW settings, that is understandable initially, but after an enemy unit has been near, or in contact with your own units, there should be some indication of strength.

It is important to know whether you are facing large full strength units, or small forces, perhaps units weakened by many stragglers. In reality you would know this, intelligence reports, sighting and battle reports from your own forces, would give you a good idea of enemy unit strength.

It would be useful and realistic if enemy unit strength and straggler boxes gave some information, even if it might be partially incorrect. These boxes could still be blank if the enemy unit had not yet been sighted by your own units.

You only see the top unit counter of each enemy stack, so it would not be giving too much information away, you only know more than one enemy unit is present by mouse-over and seeing the stack numbers in the top screen bar.

Alternatively, having the 'Intelligence Report' feature active with all FOW settings, 'Hidden Enemy' and 'None', gives a good overall appreciation of enemy strength and would greatly improve the playability and enjoyment of the game, without compromising realism. This would probably be the easiest way to display the extra information in all FOW settings

Hopefully Frank will be wrapping up the next game for Campaigns on the Elba, or whatever it will be called, for the campaigns of 1806 and 1813?

Yes lets hope so because this really should be a series all the way up to 1815.

PS 1814 my favorite

I would love to see either Napoleon's Italian campaign or the Peninsular campaign, just love the COTD, cannot get enough of it.

I would also like to see the game expanded into other campaigns and the Peninsular war would be a first choice, but that would bring in fortifications, sea supply, etc.. However, any other campaigns would be gratefully received.

Nice review, good find.

PS Should this go into the reviews section at the top of the forum ?

The link to the only review is now dead, so now is the time for the moderator to unlock the thread and add your link.

If we're voting, I would love to see this system apllied to the American Civil War.

Not so much a vote, more of a wish list.

The developer, Frank Hunter, has produced an ACW title, but a long time ago. I think it still has some value and I still have it on my HDD, there is also a website dedicated to the game (including a free download), also including a lot of help and hints.

http://www.thurb.com/games/acw/intro.htm (when on this page, click on the red text for more info)

As with all Frank's games, it is a unique gaming experience and may need some work to run on newer systems.
