The allied forces in (central) Western France and those in the Southern France continued their push "outwards" and nearly managed to link up this impulse.

With no units lost, Italians out of oil and with no good prospect of getting more, a disorganized results against Balbo is as almost as good as destroying.

With axis oil at a premium and with the Western Allies finally opening up and expanding a second front against Germany, the Soviet cranked up the Red Army and push as hard as they dared this turn.

Turn 29. May/June 1944. The Eastern Front. Axis #3. Counterattack (Land Combat).

The Germans counterattack with what was initially a good attack before the addition of Soviet defensive air. Though the Germans managed not to lose any unit they disorganized a number of units requiring oil for reorganization.

Honestly, I thought I'd cancelled this first land combat and was surprise when it showed up for resolution. The Soviets managed to roll average on the attack and only lose two units while destroying a German unit. Could have been worse I guess. But then on the remaining two attacks the Germans roll below average when average rolls would have been good enough.

The Germans counterattack the Soviets in what they believe are two good attacks. In reality they are but on the second attack the Germans roll a "2" showing the Soviet player that he's not the only one who can roll low.

Not surprisingly, this pool was very large this turn.

The Italian NAVs and the German u-boats in this pool are they because of the successful allied landings at Brest, France and La Spezia, Italy.

Turn 29. May/June 1944. Targeting of Axis Oil.

Even with the fine weather and all the land actions, the USA and the Soviet Union made a concerted effort to destroy the flow of axis oil. Unlike two turns ago, the Germans place fighters and AA division in position to defend their precious oil supplies. The result was that the allies managed to destroy 3 of 7 German oil points. A disappointing result for both sides.

The Americans did manage to destroy the 1 saved Italian oil point, which effectively has put Italy with no oil and little prospect of getting more. With not enough oil to reorganize all their units the German player is highly unlikely to send any of their 7 oil points to Italy.

Germany is stretching the 4 oil points they did get this turn and the o-chit that they'll be getting next turn to reorganize all their land units and as many of their air units that they can.

German high command had to go through a detailed review of units to determine which ones get oil and which ones stay disorganized.

(Not shown). With respect to Italy, without any oil all their disorganized units requiring oil remained disorganized.

The USA required a whopping 20 oil points to reorganize all their units this turn. Oil points which they had above and beyond that required to keep their production at 100% as shown later in the economic reports.

The new Japanese home at Formosa fell to the Americans. Hong Kong stood repeated attempts by the Nationalist Chinese to take it.

Turn 29. May/June 1944. Taihoku, Formosa. Land Combat.

By forgetting to move these units on the last impulse of last turn, which was fine weather in the North Monsoon, the USA player had to make the attack on Taihoku, Formosa this turn and in the rain. The attack succeeded even though all the attackers were disorganized.

The Nationalist Chinese tried twice and failed miserably both times to take Hong Kong, or at least inflict some losses on the Japanese defenders there.

Malaya and Singapore were liberated and the CW move into Siam and adjacent to Bangkok. However, with the Monsoon season coming, it may take several months before the new Japanese home in Siam can be conquered. But conquered it will. Will those Japanese every give up?

Turn 29. May/June 1944. Kwajalein, Marshall Islands.

Nimitz and his forces successfully take Kwajalein. He and his ground and substantial naval forces have now been order to proceed to the ETO (European Theater of Operations) as quickly as possible. There's a critical need for more allied ground troops. Also, more naval forces won't hurt either.

Turn 29. May/June 1944. Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. Land Combat.

Though, once again, a half of dozen ground strikes failed to disorganize the out of supply Japanese defender of Kwajalein, Nimitz decided to go on with the landing because he knew he could attack on the Blitz CRT and not be forced to attack on the assault. Though almost a sure thing, this attack did carry with it a 2.5% chance of utter failure, which would have resulted in the loss of Nimitz, his HQ unit and the two attacking marine division.

Why bother attacking Hong Kong? Once Siam falls, all the Japanese units will disappear, so why waste effort?

Rome should be a very high priority for the Allies; since they already have Milan and Tripoli, that will cause the incomplete conquest of Italy during the Peace step.

Also, of course, the CW should be scrambling to find three more corps, any three corps, to get into Italy. I suspect that the Axis really isn't set up for a Yugoslav declaration of war.

With the soaring need for more ground units in Western Europe and Italy, significant effort will be made to move as many units from Japan as quickly as possible to these areas. However, enough ground (i.e., garrison) units will be kept there to make sure partisans don't spawning in critical areas and to quickly deal with any that spawn outside of those areas.
