Well it's official. Capt. Pixel is once again re-employed after nearly 16 months of joblessness.

I lost my job right after 9-11-01, as the aircraft refinishing company I worked for went under.

That was the most recent in a long line of less-than-satisfying Design Drafting positions I've had over the last 5 years. Each one succesively lower paying and more odious, and the bottom point that has dropped my income from $60k/year US to less than $10k last year. (That's below poverty level, folks)

From my 25 year career high point as Chief Engineer for a multi-million dollar, multi-national manufacturing company to my current position -

Swimming Pool Repair Technician. Whoo hoo!

(Anyone who'd care to tell me that this country hasn't gone to ****, have I got an argument for you!)

BUT - a minimum wage job scrubbing pools is much, much better than no job at all. So wish me luck in my new endeavor in the exciting field of swimming pool maintenance. Boy, am I glad I spent all those years starving while delivering pizza so I could get my college degree. It sure has paid off. Maybe if I'd done pool scrubbing instead of pizza delivery, I'd be somewhere by now.

(Actually a friend suggested that I am now pre-positioned for a career in porno films, and my first ride out today confirmed that notion might just be true. Stay tuned. ;) )

Hmmm what can I say.

You are american. If you are good with electronics, there will soon be jobs opening up in BC. Last I heard they make some of your cruise missile electronics there. I think you will need a lot of serious restocking there.

Hmm GM will require some extra shifts replacing military vehicle lines too.

But contrary to dire predictions, the economy in Canada is doing fine.

This is the time wise people start looking for who produces what that is being expended in the gulf.

I see a lot of construction firms becoming busy soon (Iraq) and no you don't have to go there, merely replace the workers here that will soon not be because they did in fact leave here to go there.

Avoid jobs linked to the aero industry though. ie don't get your hopes up submitting a resume to Bombardier.

Mostly Product manufacturing stuff. Grilles & Registers, SMT fabrication jigs, Gerber, vacuum chamber film deposition equipment, and privately-owned aircraft interiors for very rich people who can't decide where they should spend their money. That kind of thing. (Unfortunately, no Civil or Architectural experience - D'oh!)

But Ideally, I'd like to get back into middle management and direct the efforts of others. (I think it's the Captain in me. )

Three young women are standing around a copy machine, dressed professionally, two wear glasses.

Suddenly there is a knock at the door, and when it is opened a shirtless, tanned man stands there.

"Hello ladies. I hear the company pool needs to be scrubbed?"

Ba-kuncha-koo-ba ba kuncha koo ba ba.

:D

Good luck Capt. P! With luck, perhaps you'll do a pool owned by a wealthy young lass who has been kicked to the curb by her b/f and she could fall for you and start you off in your own design business. Hey, it could happen! :D

Seriously, I hope this job is very temporary for you, and that you are able to return to your chosen profession soon!

Things are already looking up! I just got a raise to (wait for it - wait for it --) $7.00/hour!!!! Whoo hoo! Not bad for one week of work. The boss likes me.

That first paycheck was a little disappointing, but it WAS a paycheck. Patience and perserverance are what's called for now. :)

Oh, and I'm getting to learn Spanish from my fellow co-workers (most of whom don't have four words of English among them. It's a good thing I studied Espanol in high school. )

No rich dowagers yet, but I've only just begun.

Again, thanks for the support guys. I really appreciate it. :D
