A Sad Day

for

El Lobo

Yesterday, El Lobo found his dog (Samson) dead.

El Lobo isn't sure what caused Samson's death, but he suspects that someone poisoned Samson.

El Lobo loved that dog.

I suspect that right now El Lobo feels much like completing a turn 180 and sending it to me. Accordingly, it might be a couple days before we get back into the war.

Rest in Peace Samson.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Question

for

The War College

Opening Note

El Lobo has landed at Trincomalee and three BBs with two APDs are two hexes away from Colombo.

Intelligence suggests that El Lobo doesn't have any Carriers nearby (Allied Subs and Allied Aircraft have not spotted any Japanese Carriers).

I have all Dutch Subs very close and they are closing in on the task forces at Trincomalee and the one close to Colombo.

I have also formed 4 separate Carrier Fleets and one Surface Bombardment Fleet in Bombay and they are headed toward Ceylon in an effort to intercept his task forces and destroy them.

Present Settings for Aircraft

I want to inflict as much damage as possible (the reason I have set the Bombers altitude so low).

The following Task Forces are set with Reaction at 3. All five Task Forces are moving together (i.e., traveling in the same hex together).

Right now the Torpedo Bombers are set at 2,000 feet with a range of three.

Fighters are set for 50% Escort and 50% CAP; all flying at 15,000 feet with range of three.

The Question

What are your recommended settings for Carrier Aircraft; the torpedo bombers and fighters?

Best Regards,

-Terry

Altitude depends on many things including weather.

TBs I always send in as low as possible (1000 feet) to decrease detection time and (assuming most CAP will be high to get the "bounce") to avoid most of the CAP.

DBs have their best accuracy making a DB attack which must start between 10,000 and 19,000 feet. I almost always use 10,000 .... however, if weather is poor causing a low cloud ceiling (overcast, or any rain condition) I send them level bombing at 3000 or 4000 feet. Early on Japanese AA is poor.

2 engine LBs go in at 4000 feet to avoid light AA but still have a good chance of getting hits. I would not send them after the BB group where their bombs will be ineffective. Have a sweep or two go into the target hex since any escort with the LB will be too low to defend much.

HBs can fend for themselves better but need to be low enough to get hits. Go down to 6000 feet if house rules allow, otherwise use the usual 10000 foot lower limit.

I doubt very much that such an invasion and SCTF have no carrier support. Check the D/L on you subs - if they are all high in an area that is where the enemy CVs are. Your Op Report may also list sightings of CV type aircraft.

BBfanboy-

Thank you for your recommendations regarding settings for Carrier Aircraft.

The Allies still haven't spotted any enemy Carriers near Ceylon, but now I am a tad concerned!

I may have to rethink sending the British Carriers and Surface Fleet down to Ceylon. I don't think I could stomach losing the Prince of Whales, Repulse, Houston, and Danae.

This is going to be a tough call.

Best Regards,

-Terry

If you can stay NW of Ceylon while launching your carrier aircraft and no sign of KB or MKB, you should be all right. 9 hexes is max range for Kate/Jill bombers and too far for Vals (and, I believe, Judys). Zeros can go to 14 hexes with drop tanks.

BBfanboy-

A Japanese Surface Combat Task Force is about three hexes northeast of colombo and another about three hexes southeast of trincomalee.

I still don't see any Japanese Carriers.

The four British Carriers now have their aircraft set pursuant to your recommendations and are 7 hexes south of Bombay heading toward Colombo along with the Prince of Whales Surface Combat Fleet.

I may still decide to turn them around for fear of the damn Japanese Carriers being somewhere close by.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Combat Report

for

June 5, 1942

Japanese Carriers (the Suryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku) are off the coast of Ceylon. One Allied Mitchel Bomber Squadron was given orders to bomb the Japanese ground troops that landed at Trincomalee. Japanese Zeros intercepted the Allied Bombers: destroyed 2, damaged 6, and the bombers didn't bomb the Japanese ground troops. The four British Carrier fleets and the Prince of Whales Surface Combat fleet are South of Bombay steaming for the Ceylon Area. The War College will meet and decide whether the Allied fleets continue toward Ceylon to intercept the enemy or turn around and head back to Bombay.

The Brit CVs can't successfully engage that IJN TF. I would strip the torpedo planes and base them at the closest land base with some fighter support. You likely won't end up with the same numbers or level of co-ordination on attacks but they may at least scare the Japanese CVs away.

*just make sure the base is AirHQ/torpedo equipped!!

pontiouspilot-

Thank you for responding.

Your fellow Canadian, BBfanboy has provided similar advice regarding the British Carriers not being a match for the Japanese Carriers spotted off the coast of Ceylon.

The British Carriers and Prince of Whales Combat surface fleets will do an about face and head for Abadon. If I feel safe enough, I will stop off and unload the aircraft at Bombay.

Best Regards,

-Terry

INDIA

USA FORCES

June 4, 1942

Opening Note

The following U. S. ground troops and aircraft are either in India, in route to India, or earmarked for India.

Considering El Lobo’s recent sinking of an entire Allied Transport Task Force (1 destroyer and 7 xAKs, 1 Base Force and 3 AA units) and his recent invasion of Ceylon, all Transport Task Forces are being rerouted to Diego Garcia, then North, and then East to Bombay. The route is much longer. I am hoping the new route will be safer.

The ground troops at Cape Town are waiting for Political Points to buy them out.

I am presently working on putting together a comprehensive list of all ground troops and all aircraft deployed in India along with the Port, Aircraft, and Fort levels where such forces are presently garrisoned. I hope to have it for the War College within a week or so.

Jocke-

Yes.

I also bought out a heap of restricted Australian and New Zealand Armor. These armor units are in India along with the entire Burma Corps and Chinese that are growing (Chinese are presently at 3258 AV...resting and filling TOE).

I plan to push through China to Manchukuo and Korea.

Japanese in China
As of June 4, 1942

I was curious as to the forces El Lobo has dedicated to China. So, I read some of my AARs from April 1, 1942 through April 16, 1942, and then a few recent ones.

This is the list I came up with and I am sure there are more Japanese in China.

It is hard for me to believe that El Lobo has so many Infantry Divisions, Regiments, and Brigades in China!

No surprise - China was the most populous country in the world even in the 1940s and even with poorly equipped/poorly trained soldiers, their numbers made them hard to conquer. Many of the IJA units listed appear to be artillery and tanks bought out from Manchukuo (at least we hope PP were paid for them).

BBfanboy-

Nope, El Lobo didn't have to pay Political Points for the Manchukuo troops.

El Lobo and I have only one House Rule, to witt: We are ignoring Victory Points to give us more freedom of choice as to what we want to do and to guarantee that we play the game to the bitter end!

Interesting tactic! Hard to pull off though. Especially if your opponent doesn´t have to pay PPs to move the Manchurian army into China to block you. Very good defensive terrain all the way!

You will have to take Rangoon (obviously) as well as Thailand. Supply won´t flow in enough numbers through the mountains. Not even sure the extra route though Thailand is enough. Not sure even this is enough though. When I went into China with 12k AV in 45 I couldn´t supply them properly until I was able to ship in supply from Luzon to Haiphong!

Just a word of caution regarding the supply.

Jocke-

Yes, a few war days ago the Allies began to move back into Burma. Approximately 1,000 AV with AA and armored units are heading to Akyab. Not sure exactly when I will make a full punch to take back all of Burma. However, it will definitely start no later than October 15, 1942.

Yes, Rangoon must be taken first. And, I have earmarked all transport aircraft in Australia and the U.S. to be bought out and shipped to India. I plan to fly lots of supply into China.

Still, as you point out, supplying the invading Allies in China is a huge problem.

I really don't want to invade Thailand or any part of Indochina. But, your point is well taken and it might be required to have any chance at supplying the Allies in China....at least until Operation Sea Shark hooks up with Hong Kong (a very long way off).

Best Regards,

-Terry

El Lobo's Internet Is Down

As many of you may be aware, EL Lobo is an American ex-patriot living in Thailand with his lovely Thai wife.

I hadn't heard from him nor received a turn from him for a few days.

Last night, a friend of his phoned me to let me know that El Lobo's internet is down and that El Lobo wasn't sure when it would be back up.

So, for now, I'll use this time to try to learn more about the mechanics of the game and to think on strategy and tactics.

As soon as El Lobo sends me Turn 182, I will make the Allied move, return the turn to El Lobo, and wait for the combat report.

I hope each of you had a nice Christmas and hope more so that each of you stay safe over the New Year's Eve.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Terry asked in a PM if I would comment on his assessment of the enemy forces in China.

Unfortunately, while I have considerable experience and familiarity with the game structure and mechanics I have absolutely no experience playing a thinking opponent.

As most who are familiar with me know I do not have either the internet connection at home to facilitate or the time to commit to PBEM play and thus all of my experience is against the AI.

It is child's play to defeat the AI in China. In most games I have liberated 95% of China by the end of '42.

I'm currently playing a Focus Pacific scenario with the Soviets active from the start.

My game is in July '42 and the Soviets are barking at the door of a lightly defended Fusan with 29 enemy units piled up in the Port Arthur, the last Japanese bastion.

The Chinese are barking at the door to Shanghai while they and the Russians have surrounded Peking and invested Tientsin.

As you can see the 'play' in mainland Asia is far different against the AI and I really have nothing to contribute in the way of assessing enemy intentions there.

Sorry I can't be of more help Terry.

Thank you for your response.

It sure seems like you are doing well in your AI game!

Hope you can get better internet so that I could watch your AAR!

You get lots of the HA81-A3 aircraft and later some old US fighters but you get very few Chinese pilots. Don't waste them by sending their fighters on bombing missions. You should be using them to try and CAP trap a few of the IJA bombers. It means shuttling your fighters around from base to base where there is a little supply but occasionally you will surprise him.

Re: the Trincomalee landings - the ship and troop losses shown in the report are not "a heavy price" for the numbers he has available. Mere pinprix (purposely misspelled to avoid the auto-censoring of common words!)
