The Soviets seem to have tons of Action Points and as a result they are mostly going to slip the net - which is frustrating. Not sure how much longer Kleist can keep this up....

The 16th Army edge closer to Novgorod, but 18th Army have become somewhat stuck. There is a solid mass of well dug-in infantry ahead and not sure how to get round it.... Where the hell is my Siege Artillery!!?!?!?!!?

This picture says everything. I am making a complete arse-head of myself here. I cannot decide what to do, faff around for ages and then make the wrong decision

I have had to withdraw for the moment.

This heroic stack may have just saved Stalin's bacon (if if were actually in danger). It single handedly stopped the panzergruppe.

I can see the headline now - great title for a future book too....

"The foresty bit south of the river between Kiev and Kursk - Death ride of the 1st Panzergruppe!"

It's got a ring to it don't you think?

No pictures from this turn. This was a total and utter disaster. All attacks in AGN failed - not helped by the fact I did not choose to do the obvious one. I was attacked in AGC and could not counter-attack - another retreat. I took Orel but only because the Soviets are cleverly trading space for time.

Biggest issue is AGC though. The decision not to take Kiev (by using Siege Artillery) was just plain bonkers. No idea what that was about. What the hell wasn't I thinking.... I mean its Kiev!! And now Kleist's panzers suddenly can't destroy anything. They are useless in attack - even against depleted, barely fortified, out of command stacks....

And now the Soviets are starting to get bolshy and are shaping up to attack the Romanian 3rd Army - which I didn't put in proper defensive positions - well why would I?

Oh and my decisions have been rubbish for the last three turns because I have been profligate with my pp's.

Vic, I hate this game, its rubbish, and borked and unrealistic and

Narva falls! The follow up attack was less than successful - as were the attacks by the infantry armies. A rest for these is long overdue.

Sadly the bulk of the Soviets got away. The panzer crews were just too tired. An interesting situation has just developed. As there were no AGS troops to occupy Kursk, three divisions of 4th Army have stepped in. Presumably as they have crossed the boundary they will receive penalties. Will the Soviets take advantage?

This looks depressingly familiar - except there is a bit more retreating from 9th Army and a bit of advancement from the 4th. But the main units are unable to do anything at present....

No pictures again for one reason; nothing happened except the capture of Nikolayev. The mud had to return at some point, and it has this turn. Maybe that is a blessing in disguise to allow the poor infantry to recover. However, not so for all; 17th Army for example, need to continue marching south before the Romanians get a pasting.

I have managed to save some pp for an emergency - but am still low, and some decisions that have had to be taken with one eye on the pp situation are causing tension with my colleagues.

The Germans can do nothing at present. The state of the panzer forces is dire, and the infantry are simply knackered. Add to the mix that the Soviets are dug-in and its not a good combination, well not for a German anyway. PP's are all used up trying to keep the engines running for Kleist's panzers.

I am trying to get something going toward the Crimea. 17th Army have been ordered to guard the left flank of 11th Army, who have crossed the Dnepr in one place and hope to exploit this.

17th Army arrive at last - albeit knackered. And so its left to 11th Army and the 3rd Romanians to push south toward the Crimea.

Nothing much happening this turn - the Germans are exhausted. At least there is some bright news in the Southern Ukraine.

What problems do the Germans have at present? Apart from fuel, tyres, supply generally, trains, trucks, childish generals, lack of PP? Nothing - life is good.....

Sing-along "Marshal Mannerheim and his blue and white army!"

The Finns are close to clearing out Central Karelia. Otherwise, nothing to report. I built up a nice reserve of PP - and then had to spend them all on trucks and ****!

The 16th Army have not managed to eliminate the enemy from the area, but have at least managed to forge a way through to Novgorod east of the lake and occupy most of the commanding Valdai Hills

4th Army continue to plug away, although that Soviet river and fortification line looks impregnable. That being the case, it is vital that the two Panzergruppen and 9th Army start earning their corn....

Meanwhile 2nd Army continues to plough a lonely furrow in the east - heading for the city named Fortification N .

Note: there are two armies I am refusing to show. I have made plenty of mistakes in this game (and my opponent is defending brilliantly) but there are two mistakes above all others that are simply too embarrassing to admit to. I blame Hitler's interference - he made me do it.....

What a piggin' mess!!!

Mud returns with a vengeance, but not before the Soviets made a number of attacks, and forced the Germans back in a few places.

Not much happening due to the mud, but the Army Group Centre armies have been hard at it. This is TOUGH!!

I just hope that the Soviets have nothing in the east opposite 2nd Army - and have to call units away to deal with the threat. Moreover, I do not see how the 4th Army is going to cross the water - I need Strauss and Hoth to come through here!

More Mud! in Russia! in October! this game is borked I tell you!

The 18th Army make further small gains while the Finns take the only city between them and Novgorod. I can only assume with all these cities being taken that Stalin is having plenty of Paranoia attacks?

Huge volumes of PP's are wasted (er spent) this turn on keeping The Fuhrer happy

But Leningrad still seems a long way off....

With nothing really happening in the south, attention focuses on AGC. Sadly, my previous question was answered - there is a whole army in front of the small 2nd Army....

Anyway, 4th Army continue in their efforts to clear Soviet units from south of the river, but a few still stubbornly resist.

9th Army and 3rd Panzergruppe continue to apply pressure near Vyazma, while 2nd Panzergruppe have a more supporting role this turn.

No pictures this turn - a combination of snow, mud and appalling play by yours truly, means that there is little to report - although Vyazma has fallen to Hoth's infantry.

I am managing to keep on the right side of the pp situation... just, although I suspect Wagner has a contract out on me, so terrible are our relations.

But fact is, I am running out of turns and I have made two unbelievably bad decisions - I mean loads of bad decisions - but two of Mussolini-type proportions that have really not helped here. What an idiot

von Bock's men continue to inch forward, but they are, pretty much without exception, knackered. The Soviets seemingly have a lot of fresh troops in front of Moscow, and a solid hold on the north bank of the river.

Elsewhere there is little action other than southeast of Leningrad, where the Finns continue to push the Soviets back - but the Soviets look like they will have enough to hold the river line.
