Playing as Germans, easy mode, no decisions. I'm on turn 25, nearing Leningrad & Vyazma, and I don't see a single rail line or even a single HEX converted, although several blown bridges have been repaired. Nothing in the reports. So I can't move my siege artillery anywhere interesting since Brest-Litovsk, since all conquered RR hexes are still red. I know there are several decisions to encourage conversion, but since they are turned off I don't know if the RR conversion is supposed to be handled transparently? Because nothing (at all) has happened yet... And without siege artillery, taking Riga (which ALWAYS has a major garrison in my games) and Odessa are ridiculously hard.

So has anyone playing SP w/decisions OFF encountered this? Am I just missing something, or maybe the only one playing this way so it's never been noticed?

My opinion is that SP is pretty messed up in 1.03b. Decisions on or off won't get you the siege where you need it on time. There's also the issues with 1st turn bonuses/entrenchments in SP only.

Won't be starting another game until after the next patch.

This has not been my experience.

I'm not sure about what happens when you play on Easy, because I've never tried it.

My current SP playthrough is on Normal, slow AI, Historical, Geneva convention off, and although my relations with Gercke have been turning sour of late, I note that along my planned logistical line of advance the brown rail lines keep turning black at a slow but seemingly inexorable rate.

This probably has a lot to do with my decisions. Until recently I tended to give the Eisenbahntruppe whatever they needed, unless it was going to move a crucial relationship into negative territory.

I've gotten a month into a SP game that mistakenly uses the stronger Soviets PBEM enhancement, so I'm probably going to start over.

But there are an awful lot of dead Russians, and the only thing that ever seems to stop me from going where I want to go is the perennial fuel shortage.

If you encounter a wall of Russians, punch two holes and encircle. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I don't use siege guns very much, but I don't try to move them a couple thousand klicks at a time either. If I think I know where I'm going to need them in a few weeks I start moving them forwards in that direction by stages. Gercke's using a picture of my face for a dartboard right now, but in spite of that I haven't gotten any pushback because I'm being careful not to disrupt his precious timetables.

Yep, on "easy" I'm doing ok. Fuel situation is obviously easier, and with decisions off I can focus on the combat situation. Know there are still a few SP fixes/options in the works, so this is definitely more of a familiarization game. But you NEED siege artillery for some of the Major Garrisons, and since my RR's never convert it is completely useless-- since I can't move them anywhere useful. Also, my "first wave" of replacements was effectively zilch-- I got a few Italian Inf and a handful of AT guns... As Charlie Brown would say on Halloween: "I got ROCKS".

I understand the "punch a hole" strategy, but in my games the Russians are ALMOST always 3-deep after a few turns. So I attack a "weak spot", the unit just retreats onto a fresh unit. I attack that stack, and both retreat onto ANOTHER fresh unit. At which time I'm running out of APs. During the AI turn, all the units just try and restore the "3-deep" line. For example, just west of Vyazma they have such a line almost the entire width of the AGC Theatre. Again, I'm doing ok (on "easy" ) with the occasional encirclement, but these vast encirclements everyone's talking about are anything but "routine" in my experience.

But I'm not complaining about difficulty, just want to ensure all the mechanics are working the way they are described. And in my 1.03B games the RR conversion doesn't seem to be working at all, and I'm not convinced the replacement system really is either. Sounds like it MIGHT be due to the "Decisions OFF" selection, since it doesn't seem many folks are playing that way...

I've never played on Easy, so for all I know it's harder to play on Easy than on Normal.

The encirclements I get are roughly comparable to the historical ones, but probably a tad smaller.

The unit-shuffling part of the game is probably less important that the other parts, but when I'm wearing my Army or Army Group commander's hat I spend a lot of time worrying about the timing and sequence of attacks and the likely direction of the resulting retreats.

I never attack at 1:1 odds unless I have a compelling reason (and always expect to lose), and usually (but not always) try to get 2:1 odds with concentric bonuses. And I've been known to surround something one turn with armor and motorized troops, and clear it out the next with infantry assaults from many directions. Brest-Litovsk is the poster-child for that kind of situation.

Sieges are the antithesis of Blitzkrieg warfare because siegeworks take too long to set up. I'm usually surprised when I encounter a situation where the guns would actually be useful (I can only think of three off the top of my head).

Hi RandomAttack,

Decisions Off gives a more streamlined logistical system and switches off a lot of game mechanics, rail conversion being one of them (it's built into the 'Friction' mechanics).

Siege Artillery probably isn't going to work in this situation when it's restricted to German rail - an oversight on my part.

I'll sort it out but I think I'll revert Siege Artillery back to the way it was for Easy mode and maybe also for decisions Off.

Cheers,
Cameron

Ok, thanks! It was kinda funny the way it hit me quite a few turns in, like "heyyyy, WAIT a minute..."
