Taking Leningrad ?

Started playing on Challenging and finally after much effort I took Leningrad which as far as I can tell you need to cut off by around turn 11 anyhow some of the AARs helped but it seems to me that they are well out of date judging by the forces that defend Leningrad patch 1.08.07.

For example on turn 2 you have 35 Divisions defending the immediate surroundings by turn 4 its 55 Divisions and physically by this time its just possible for the Germans to reach PSKOV.

Have any of the top players played the AI recently just curious because no matter how fast I move how effective my first few turns I always hit a brick wall of Divisions that I must bludgeon my way around so as to cut off Leningrad

Not a top player, but I recently played as Axis against the AI on challenging. I thought the AI did defend Leningrad very strongly, probably too strongly relative to Moscow, since I was able to take Moscow before the mud, and I had to wait until after the mud to finish off Leningrad.

You can reach the outskirts of Pskov as early as turn 2, although I don't push the panzers that far forward, leaving them in central Latvia to do a HQ-buildup on turn 3. In my last AI game I was over the Luga on turn 4 because the AI doesn't defend in depth. Break the Velikaya and there's nothing between Pskov and Leningrad. The AI though has the ability to stamp out units at a very high rate, so even if you push into thin air you can count on a wall being present the following turn.

That is also my exprience. The ai tends to give its northern fronts far more units that are good for the defence of Moscow or the southern fronts. The solution I use is to use panzerarmee 3 to help attacking Leningrads backdoor (make sure you make a buildup before starting that operation)

Easy enough to get over the Velikaya on turn 2 and take Pskov on turn 3 and over the Luga on turn 4 but at that stage there is a mass of Russian Divisions in the general area of Leningrad.

The only alternative is to move further east and push up towards Lodeynoe but its a serious slog and the fact that you end up cutting off about 45 Divisions tells you how much the Russians have invested in defending Leningrad.

If I concentrate on taking Moscow its relatively easy and never really defended that well.
