What kind of recon unit you like most? While I am rather fond of foot recon teams loaded on jeeps (with 50 cal Brownings on them), there is one unit that I absolutely fell in love with when playing with late war US - M-8 Grayhound armoured car!

Absolutely wonderful thing - a lot faster than anything else I could find in that force, and with a decent cross-country ability. Their armour is not heavy, but good enough for the job, while their armament is more than enough - 37mm cannon and 2 MGs are a decent threat to infantry, and can well take out light vehicles. And on top there is enough carry capacity to pack in a recon or bazooka team on foot!

I absolutely love Grayhounds and once my WWII campaign gets a couple of years forwards, you will be sure to see a platoon of them in my group of Brits. But this time I will try to make sure they will have longer life expectancy than earlier on!

Greyhounds are the bane of anyone opposing the US in PBEM! I hate those things! (unless, of course, I am the US team) :D

For actual recon work (i.e. seeing, not shooting) there is nothing to beat the leg troops.

I agree with Gary, but like the German ones better. Rangers kick a$$ and take names too!

I still fondly recall in one of my first games against JJ, when my sniper took out one of his Tigers. Oh, that's gotta hurt!!:D

I probably am missing something important to recon units, but I love motorcycle squads. They are usually the first units to the hilltops and I get a good look at where the armor concentrations are. I've snuck them behind enemy lines and took out gun crews with ease. They can be hard to rally when they are so far ahead of the main force but they mange well enough.

Now if there was a Motorcycle FO (there might be, somewhere in some nations oob, but I haven't seen one yet) then we would be talking some serious fire missions. For now I just have to live with jeep type vehicle FO's.

In the desert, cavalry. Everywhere else, either motorcycle squads or MG motorcycle squads. Cavalry in the desert don't leave sand plumes, and move faster than foot soldiers. Both cavalry and motorcycles have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, and cannot be assaulted, as light AFVs and ACs can be.

I love the 2-man recon teams, especially if you can get them in platoons of 3 units. Replace the third with a sniper and you've got an infiltration recon element. You can turn off their weapons and set their range to zero, then carefully move them into the enemy lines as the enemy advances to yours. The sniper can take a rare shot at the enemy if he's in good cover and isn't being looked at by too many people. He can also call in artillery comparably to a forward observer (some would contend that he's just as good). Your scout teams can provide more intel, and when you're spotted they can give you some more covering fire. Move these all into the enemy's rear and you've got a harassment element that, while not too dangerous, can tie up resources.

Motorcycles are great, except they're too easy to spot (last time I tried, at least). Motorcycles, however, still retain enough movement to get out of trouble if they're fired on once or twice. Cavalry has a big size, so they're easy to spot... nevertheless, I keep some cavalry in all my forces. Regular Cav mostly, as a rapid-reaction force (or to move forward and screen the enemy). One platoon of Light Cavalry is kept for their excellent river-crossing ability (2 hexes!!).

I find that the 3 man MG motorcycle units aren't as easily spotted as the 10 man squads. Also, their heavier MG tends to have a better 'kick' than the weapons regular motorcycle squads tend to have.

I like cavalry when I'm advancing behind smoke. Then I send a squad or two of cavalry into the smoke to see what's on the other side.

Tigers. :D

In vehicles I like the PSW 8-RAD AC. They have the speed to pull out of trouble if they survive the first salvo and the 20 mm handles light armor and infantry equally well. Foot it's the four-man unit with the AT mines. The two-man team moves as fast with better concealment, but can't do much damage even to other infantry, let alone light armor. I also agree with the comments about snipers and tend to have a couple of them on hand for the reasons given above.

Since h2h added FOs to most of the standard recon formations, adding them to the mix isn't necessary any more.

Snipers, and I know this is going to sound weird but small AT guns ( 28mm, 37mm ), for some reason they are very very good at spotting, put them in a jeep run them up quickly.

Speaking of recon teams on foot, when it comes to playing US I really like the 4-man team with rifle grenades. With HEAT grenades they can assault and blow up any enemy tanks that come too close for comfort. In desperate situations you can even shoot them at tanks a couple of hexes away (just don't expect to hit too often).

Riding on jeeps with .50 cal MGs they can also move around very fast. I also like the (not truely historical) tactic of buying some separate recon teams and placing them on top of tanks, they are handy both on offensive and defensive in close terrain. On offensive they hang on the tanks until you reach a close terrain that could house enemy ambush, whence they jump down and go reccing in the bushes before tanks move in. On devensive, once the tank platoon reaches a good defensive position in edge of woods or town, the recce team jumps down and occupies area to the flanks of the unit, to stop enemy sneak attacks coming from those directions.

In a recent desert battle, I was also very satisfied with British LRDG trucks loaded with 4-man recon teams - trucks raced them close to hilltops and then went hiding, the recon teams stayed quiet on the hilltops and kept spotting the enemy. I just need to give them some snipers for a bit of extra eyes and bullets.

Back to the Grayhound - I noticed that the Brits get around 1943 an armoured car called Staghound that seems to be even better (at least on paper) than the Grayhound - equally fast and armed, but slightly better armoured. I need to try it out on practice before I can say anything final.

So that's why I see them in our games, even if I have nothing on the field that can be threatened by a 37mm! :D :D

A half-track...(Even a 250/1)

Because

1. They don't get killed as easily as an MC squad.
2. They can carry infantrymen. (And dislodge these scouts before revealing the HT itself)
3. They are fast.
4. They are cheap and very expendable

MC squads would be a close 2nd, paratroopers 3rd

Ah - so many AC's and so little time eh!
I do perfer the armored cars over most other scouts, except in jungle scenarios of course! ;)
Really though I think alot of countries had cool AC's in WW2, and the Brit's SAS trucks and jeeps are good ones to use also by the way!
My favorite for the German vote is the Puma, love that 50L.
The Brit's have so many that it is hard for me to choose just one, but the Staghound is a contender I would have to admit. Though I still love the RollsRoyce AC with the three mgs and Boyes AT gun. In early war scen's its a lot of fun to play with, try it some time!
The Japs have that **** Sumada I think it is called, lord I hate those things, every time I come up against one I swear that they have about sixteen mg's on them!
As far as the Americans go - thats the one area I wish we had done more in....... ;)

I also like Kubelwagens with scouts or snipers on them. It's funny how I routed a squad before with just the sniper and the kubelwagen hehehehe They're fast too, but has armor like tissue paper.

normal jeeps w/ bazooka team, snipers and recon team as US

kubelwagens w/snipers + recon squads as gerri

as cheap as possible vehicles they blow off too fast...
i see not much use in SDKFZ cause the 20mm gun is
too inacurate and even causes almost no damage to inf.

I like the SdKfzw 8-rad. It's an OK all-around vehicle. I use it for recon support--that is, if my recon is spotted by something big. Use them to tie up that something-big until slower things can take it out.

Still... not my /favourite/.

Staghound is awesome. The only advantages the Grayhound has is that it is slightly smaller (Size 2 vs Size 3) and can carry more men (4 rather than 2). It is also cheaper, tho' I would recommend the (BR) AEC series of AC to anyone who hasn't tried them. BR Armoured Cars almost make up for those Bren carriers.

And Sten guns.

I hate Sten guns.

If its smoke and I'm pretty sure something is there I'll send assault gun. The front armor is so thick they usually can survive an assault where any inf squad or light vehicle will most certainly die. So its a gamble, but the stugs are tough and small.

For armored units, I love the German Sdk5z-234/2 (Puma).

As a recon unit, it packs the most punch! The 50mm gun can take out most tanks (side/ rear shot necessary for the heavier tanks), it is as fast as the greyhound, same size, and has twice the armor on the front!

For foot units, nothing beats special ops / rangers......or a sneaky sniper.....hard to pick a favorite out of the infantry.

No contest the Typhoon with Rockets. Nothing else comes back as often or is as deadly. (especially to trucks, it just loves targeting trucks. but if there are no trucks, its a real tank killer):) :)

I agree with the consumer of rotten flesh up there. ;) :)

Typhoons.

I used some other aircraft vs. Doom in our china-on-china game, can't remember it's name but it's beautiful - comes in often and bombs a stretch of 4 hexes, so close is good enough! :D Possibly a Warhawk...:p

Finnish Landsverk 182 AC. I just love that 13mm machine gun. And if it's winter, well, then there's nothing better than a Finnish Ski squad. They are elite and very, very fast. :p
