I have started noticing some air combat results that look a little odd. For instance, 316 8AF heavies, escorted by 60 P38s get hit by 58 190A-5. Now, the escort is light, and I would expect it to get overwhelmed if 150+ LW fighters turned up. However, these 190s are still really good: they slice through the escort taking down 10 of them, get into the bombers and shoot down 21 of them. They lose 1 of their own (probably got in the way and hit by his own side!). Does this strike anyone as odd... for 58 fighters to average 1/2 a kill each is almost Marianas Turkey shoot levels and those were not 4E bombers.

The LW pilots were good (mostly 90+ with some real dogs at 75!), but US were mostly 80s and 90s with a also ran 67...)

I have no issue with the boxes being broken etc but 1/2 a kill per aircraft seems well off.
Save available.

It would be good to look at the save.

It really depends on the situation when the interception took place. Sometimes formations could be disrupted and hit by the flak before interception. P-38 is not the best known escort plane against 190. Experience difference between 90 and 80 can be very high as it takes square for the skill calculation. Iow, result is in favor of LW more then expected, but not something which couldn't happen.

Where should I send the save?

Even if the bombers were unescorted, I struggle to believe that 58 fighters (even the best) could shoot down 21 heavy bombers. I can't justify that they couldn't, however, at least 10 of them engaged P38a. Granted that P38 isn't brilliant, but the benefit of escorts is the disruption to the positioning moves and attack runs... it is a brave pilot indeed who continues an attack with enemy fighters around.

As a stat, Hartmann managed 352 kills in 825 engagements... and not against US 4Es. So the entire 58 fighters achieved better than Hartmann's average... which just seems to be unexpected.

I can't really comment w/o a save, but your example is not something which couldn't happen. 21 bomber is lost not to the fighter, but performing a mission which got intercepted by fighters. Losing 21 out of 318 is not a miracle.

You can open a thread in Tech support area and attach it there.
