Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Allied #8. Japan. China

Two things to note.

1. The Japanese Army Group in the North, and under command of Yamamoto (not seen, under a stack), left their southern flank exposed. A Chinese Nationalist cavalry corps exploited this and put Yamamoto and a large portion of his Army Group out of supply.

2. The communist Chinese under Mao considered a counterattack against the 4-4 IJN marine corps. With HQ support they could get +8A. However, unlike the Japanese land combat that took Hengyang, China (in south), a loss of three communist land units would be a total disaster. The loss of two wouldn't be much better. All this risk for the possible gain of destroying a single Japanese, albeit marine, corps was determined not worth it. So the communist choose not to attack.

Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Axis #11. Germany DOW The Netherlands.

Enough waiting. Hitler is threatening to shoot all his generals if they don't invade now.

By the way, the USA does NOT react.

Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Axis #11. Japan Closes the Burma Road.

No reaction by the USA to this either. Isn't isolationist grand.

Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Axis #11. Germany. Port Attack. Rotterdam.

The port of Rotterdam is bombed by the Germans. There's 2 CPs that won't be finding their way to CW convoy routes.

Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Axis #11. Germany. Land Combat. Netherlands.

The Dutch make a grave mistake in setting up their corps in Holland. Of all the Dutch should have known that the lake between that corps and Amsterdam freezes during snow. Meaning that the Germans can attack that attack with a Blitz and used a breakthrough to capture the unoccupied city of Amsterdam. The German airborne unit supported by two ground units easily captures Amsterdam. After all the waiting the conquest of the Netherlands was anticlimactic and a piece of cake given the mistake the allies made in setting up the Dutch corps. Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. Axis #11. Japan. Land Combat. China.

With the weather easing up a bit, Japan is able to reestablish supply to all of Yamamoto's army group in the north. Yamamoto is forced into a below average attack against the Chinese Nationalist cavalry corps to reestablish his southern flank and make sure supply to his army group is secured. Though, it was Yamamoto who left his flank exposed in the first place so he's reaping a bit of his own medicine.

The attack, never the less, goes very well.

Turn 4. Mar/Apr 1940. India. Partisan.

A partisan does show up in India and takes over one of the CW RPs there. It's going to be a pain to deal with him. However, much easier and less impact than if Bombay had been lost.

Out of curiosity, what is the gain for invading Finland, that is worth the cost of two US entry chits? If the Russians could actually conquer Finland it might be worth it, but German peacekeepers make that very difficult.

I just want the borderlands and expect Germany to allow the claim. If not, the Soviets are ready to go to war.

Germany hasn't got the necessary units to go to Finland, IMHO. France is far to strong to allow for peacekeepers in Finland...

Turn 5. May/June 1940. Axis #1. Weather.

The axis win the initiate and elect to go first on the first roll (Axis = 7 + 1 = 8, Allied = 4). The axis are rewarded with fine weather in the North Temperate.

Turn 5. Axis #1. Italy.

Surprisingly, Italy chooses to remain neutral. They use their 1 naval move to load a division in the 4 box in the Eastern Med. Also, the Italians use their 2 land moves to move Balbo and a 4-3 infantry corps away from the Tunisia border and to and adjacent to Tripoli.

Is it possible that the Italians are deescalating in Libya?

Turn 5. Axis #1. Germany DOW Belgium. USA Reacts.

While Italy appears to be deescalating in North Africa, Germany is doing such thing. They declare war on Belgium. The USA reacts negatively to this by adding a chit to their Germany/Italy entry pool.

Turn 5. Axis #1. Germany. Land Combat, Belgium.

First two land combats were automatic. The third, which was by the German airborne corps was, after ground support, at +18A. A 2 or 4 (4%) would have resulted in the loss of the corps. A 3 would have resulted in the survival of the corps but it would have been disorganized (2%). While not a sure thing, the odds were good that the corps would survive and remain organize (94%), but one never is sure until after the roll is made.

The airborne drop was made to deny the coast the allies, specifically the CW and prevent them from bringing in more units to Western Europe. The price, for this however, is that the German airborne is exposed to counterattack. Though the Germans do have 6 factors of defensive air support in range, it'll be interesting to see if the allies decide to counterattack, and if so, how much risk they're willing to take.
