The Axis win the initiative. However, it's winter, it's better to let the Allies go first, especially with a +2 modifier on the weather die roll...

January/february 1943, Allied impulse number 1:

The USSR takes a land action, the French, CW and US take naval actions.

Listen to: All For You - Nat King Cole

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OehDHv8T-eM

The convoy escorts are put back into place. Units are shipped overseas towards different area's of the map. Allied Fleets sail into the Cape Saint Vincent and the Timor Sea. In the last sea area the Tokio Express providing supply for Australia isn't found (Axis 1, Allies 7). In the South China Sea, SUB's try to find the enemy ships. Japanese planes are patrolling, but both sides again fail to find eachother (Allies 5, Axis 7).

The Soviet army improves positions:

Just started a global war game with my buddy. We haven't actually played since the late 90's with Dave and Eric in Elgin Illinois (either of you guys around in the forums?), so, this thread gives me hope that we will be able to have a fun game!

January/february 1943, Axis impulse number 5:

Japan takes a naval, Germany an air and Italy a land action.

Suddenly, the Japanese sees an opportunity to get at US TRS, which are sailing in the Clarion (my mistake). Only two cruisers are available for this mission. Banzai. However, due to the weather (rain), the search roll of 3 isn't enough to find the transports (a 2 was needed). The Allies roll an 8.

It's storm in the Coral Sea and there are US carriers and 3 old BB's with some cruisers in the 1 box in the sea area. The Japanese decide to gamble and send a cruiser squadron out of Rabaul to attack. Search rolls are Axis 1 and Allies 7. The Japanese decide to select the 0 and 1 box. In the rain, the American task force is surprised by the fast cruisers. Two surprise points are used to increase the damage and 6 are used to select targets:

The Japanese abort the sea area after a succesfull hit and run attack.

After some thinking, the Japanese decide that to stay in Australia isn't a good idea at all. With the new US CV's and the long summer turns appearing on the calender, those units are needed for defense. The number of build points invested in those expensive marines and HQ are simply to high to fritter away in an area where there is nothing of interest. The US can, in time, simply decide to ignore Yamashita. That's not good at all. And with storms in the area, there isn't going to be any planes flying around to attack the evacuation fleet. The Japanese don't want to fight in the Timor Sea, but te US does. However, due to the storms both sides don't find eachother (rolls Allied 4, Axis 4).

The convoy escorts are replaced. The Japanese don't want to fight in the South China Sea, but the US submarines are searching for Japanese shipping, without succes (Allies 5, Axis 10).

Germany rails two FTR's and the Stuka out of the Leningrad area towards Tashkent and the Ostfront. Italy improves positions in Morocco and Egypt. Germany rebases the Luftwaffe towards the Ostfront. Here is the weather for the next couple of impulses:

January/february 1943, Allied impulse number 9:

Here is the situation at the Ostfront, without doubt the most important area on the map. The Soviets conclude that it is in their interest that the turn ends. The one MIL not at the frontlines is of minor importance, compared to the HQ-I, FTR2, 2 INF and INF division which are completing their training at the moment and await transport to the frontlines.

March/April 1943, Axis impulse number 1:

The OKH in Berlin isn't happy with the situation at the Ostfront at the moment. Abwehr reports that the number of Soviet units increased a lot during the winter. At the moment, they count 24 Soviet corps including HQ's in the Urals, while the Germans have 18 corps available. The counts on FTR's are about equal (6 German and 5 Soviet, not counting the two obsolete FTR3 the Luftwaffe still has in the region). On bombers, the Luftwaffe can pull a nice punch in the region. The quality of the land units is far better on the German side, but the lack of units to fill gaps when losses appear is troublesome.

The situation around Tashkent also doesn't look promising. The Soviets have 6 corps (incl. HQ) and the Axis have four corps there, which are also not good units (Italian troops...).

So reïnforcements need to be send to the frontlines in the East to make sure the Soviets can be dealt with.

Listen to: Das Grossstadt-Lied (Über die Dächer der grossen Stadt) - Adolf Steimel Tanzorchester

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SkI2C_Yu00

Germany takes a land action, Italy an air action and the Japanese take a naval action.

Germany flies two condors in the Cape St. Vincent, putting the US forces out of supply. Italy flies a Gabbiano into the Red Sea. Japan flies NAV into the China Sea and a FTR into the Sea of Japan. Alle planes go into the 4 box.

Japan puts convoy escorts in place. It keeps the main fleet in reserve, since it wants to react on the expected move by the US navy towards the convoy lines to Japan. Problem is, that the US fleet is fast, and can reach as far as the Sea of Japan to get a reasonable chance of getting a shot at the Japnaese convoys. There is no way the Imperial Fleet can defend all sea area's adequately by sending out the fleet. Sure, one can sail into the South China Sea to try to intercept the moving US fleet, but if that fails, the chance of a counterattack is gone. Japan lost the initiative.

Japanese cruisers sail into the Coral Sea. They search the sea area in storms for Allied merchant shipping. Axis roll 2, Allies roll 7. The merchantmen, while fighting the storms, are confronted by the torpedoes of the big Japanese cruisers. HMAS Sydney escorting the merchantmen is sunk:

The CW aborts the sea area. Japanese submarines in the Tasman Sea search for merchantmen too. However, it's a big ocean (Axis 9, Allies 9).

With snow in the Arctic, the Luftwaffe decides not to waste bombs on the entrenched Soviet forces. Germany rails units out of the Leningrad Area towards Tahskent and the Ostfront. Italy rails a ATR to the Ostfront.

Turkish MTN enter the last remaining Soviet port along the Black Sea, where the Soviet Black Fleet is based, with empty bunkers:
