I've been playing ATG now for about 6 months and I THOUGHT I understood logistics. I thought trains, trucks, transports were needed for transporting supply.

Rereading the rules and doing some testing, I see now that supply is transported to and from the Supreme HQ even if there are no trains or trucks or transport ships. In addition, produced SFTs are sent to the appropriate HQ without need of trains, trucks, transport ships.

All the rail, land, and naval cap are needed for are sending out SFTs.

Is that right?

Yes, I did. It's great. But then I played the game for six months and my mind got all encumbered with 'experience,' and misperceptions and that led me to think that I had to have trucks and trains for supply, just as I needed them for the TOE system. This was reinforced by situations where I couldn't explain why I didn't get supply, and adding trucks and trains seemed to ameliorate things.

There is one small error in that essay, I think. The HQ will not send out SFTs to units without the use of trucks, trains, and ships.

Yes in order to send out sft the headquarters needs a means to do it, either the receiving unit is with in normal movement of the sfts to be sent or the headquarters must have trains for rail movement or trucks for over land movement or cargo for sea movement. This is true of all headquarters. I generally put extra trucks in my group headquarters to allow for movement of reinforcements from said headquarters to its assigned units.

This is only partially true. If your HQ is within its normal range of support it will send out reinforcements without any trucks, trains or ships. My HQs rarely have any transport units in the first two dozens turns and my combat units get reinforced up to their TO&E template limits. I do keep trains in my SHQ. If you have a need to manually transfer some stuff then you will need some transport units.

Can someone please explain what this means? I'm still trying to learn this game.

A HQ can apply bonuses to unit up to seven hexes. This is what I call the support zone. Without transport units I'm not certain that you can get reinforcements to your HQ's units beyond that zone. Also, I believe that within that zone, depending on terrain, the further a unit is from its HQ the less reinforcements will get delivered.

I had thought I read that the TOE used the normal transportation system (as for manual transfers), but at a heavily discounted rate. It seems to me that your TOE reinforcing could be using the Land transfers in the absence of any train or truck. There is never a lot in Land, but if the TOE is heavily discounted it seems as though it could do what what you are describing, especially over the small area of normal range of HQ support. Is this how you understand it is working?
