Does a unit with lower readiness make them easier to kill?

A unit with lower readiness has a harder time killing things. It's fire rate, accuracy, and ability to maneuver will suffer. The readiness of your units is also factored into your command cycle, so try to keep your units topped-off so as to have a short and flexible command cycle, while doing whatever you can to lower the enemy's readiness. This is usually accomplished with artillery.
