I have notice that the radar line of sight for surface to surface is quite long, the scenario attached is a sovremeny which detects an arleigh burke at +90nm...se photo.

open the scenario attached an speed up to 15 sec, the russian ship will detect the us ship at the edge of the radar detection

Yeah the Band Stand is OTH-SW capable, to target SS-N-9/22. Nasty system.

The surface radar range ring also reflects this. You can clearly see the Band Stand arc.

Its a complex sim

Thanks!

Band Stand (Monolit) is particularly noteworthy in that it combines a C-Band OTH-B emitter and an X-Band OTH-SW emitter in the same system. Someone at the design bureau must have made a huge bet on "we don't need no stinkin' helicopters for OTH targeting!".

Interesting. I didn´t know OTH surface radars existed aboard ships.
Where can I find more information?
By the way, I´ve found a great picture page from a former HMS Cardiff 1982 war veteran where he clearly illustrates the principles of surface and air radar ranging. Maybe Paul B. knows this guy.

For those of you so technically inclined, here is a somewhat basic, non-classified lecture series on OTH radar that, I believe, Was presented to an Atlanta IEEE symposium. I'm not an expert on the subject, but as you read this .pdf one should be mindful of antenna considerations. There is a lot of interesting data on coverage vs frequency.

OTH Radar

Edit: I am curious where you found technical data from a real source about the Sovremenny radar. It seems most intelligence sources indicate Russia is selling off it's Sov's to concentrate on the Udaloy (to the Chinese). Something about unreliable propulsion systems.

I do know this from first-hand experience. Overestimating the capabilities of ones adversaries is a well-known tactic used to generate financial backing from politicians reluctant to spend $$$ on defense systems. The real truth is barely available for early Cold War systems, unless you're on a need-to-know.
