Since there is no risk for a breakthrough in France I say that we do our impulse with all countries.

Here is the draft plan for 'Northern Liberty'.

1) Two garrisons to threaten, or capture, Petsamo.
2) Pinning force, containing armour or mech.
3) Infantry division ready to invade on the surprise impulse. Preferably on a harbour. May be cancelled since other attacks have priority.
4) Cavalry division, or other fast unit, to capture the coastline in order to eliminate German involvement or supply.
5) Main attack force. Mostly infantry or cavalry. Advance on Tampere and Helsinki and open up the route for the armoured force in Leningrad.

Important: Main force may have supply concerns once they advance into Finland. A second HQ might need to be transferred here.

With this force it is impossible for Germany to keep Soviet forces out of mainland Finland. Hence the war will continue. Main focus is to limit the possibility for Germany to send lots of peacekeepers. Once encircled, Helsinki will fall sooner or later.

If there is no risk then yes, looks good to me. If there is any risk of loss of the 4-3 at all then NOOOOOOO

Huge risk since I didn't leave enough ships for maximum shore bombardment. The odds is 5:2 + 2.

Re point 4: Have you ever heard of Suomussalami???!!!

Okay looks good. Operation Northern Liberty will be kept under consideration and a plan for Operation Oil Grab will be formulated.

The question then is if it goes to Egypt? I think that is better than to save British Somaliland?

Sure - although why are they being moved given the oil situation?

I am not comfortable with French battleships stationed in Syria when they must be in mainland France when, or if, Vichy is installed.

OIL

So let’s see if I can understand this oil malarchy.

The French have the Iraqi oil that is being saved in Damascus. So that will be available to use next turn – provided my units can trace a supply path? E.g. I need to ensure that either there are no enemy units in the West and Eastern Med or I need to have CP or naval units of my own.

Convoy shenanigans

The French have 8 build points + they can use the oil in Bordeaux to re-organise. Am I okay to assume this is the case or do you need to use some of the convoy points for the CW?

Potential issue

How am I getting the Hanoi, Algerian and Senegalese resources to France?

Algeria is fine – that is overland through neutral Spain.

But I (France) do not have the convoys for the other two.

Hanoi = 9 convoys required
= 1 in Sth China Sea
= 1 in Bay of Bengal
= 1 in Arabian Sea
= 1 in Cape Verde
So presumably I am using 5 of the CW?

Senegal = 2 convoys required
= 1 Cape Verde
So presumably I am using 1 of the CW?

BUT I only have 1 convoy point in Cape Verde and not 2.

French have 7 convoys (6 used and 1 unused)

Where are the other 3? Red Sea = 1 and Eastern Mediterranean = 2 + the 4 mentioned above = 7 with the Red Sea being the unused one. CW must be using the 2 in the Eastern Mediterranean.

So that is all fine except....

Summary

..... Why is Cape Verde being used twice? The Cape Verde convoy point being used when looking at the route is the French light blue both times.

yes and no: yes this is the rules, but (if non resolved with last beta patch) there is a bug with oil: only unit in med can use oil in Damascus-Suez zone: so it' s better to save outside med if you can, or ask to CW to give 1 oil to you next turn, to be saved in New Caledonia or Camerun for reorg (here is useful for free france later)

The French can trace to their oil in Syria via a chain of CP around the Capetown route, unless the Axis manage to break that connection completely. (Unlikely).

Yes. That is what France has to play with.

I get back later on with an explanation why the convoy routes are like they are.

If this is correct then France is more or less screwed when playing with the oil rule.

I've just played through to the end of the next turn and was able to organise Billotte using the Syrian oil.

Here are the French and Soviet end of turn orders:

Stay At Sea

France: Force du Raide in Western Med to 3-box
1st Cruiser Squadron in Baltic to 3-box

Return To Base

France: Battleships in 0-box in Western Med and Submarines to Marseille
Ships in Cape St Vincent to Senegal

Use Oil

France: Billotte, Georges and the LeO
USSR: Re-organise Zhukov and Timoshenko + Bombers in Baku and Bander Shah (I think that uses just one oil??).

Production

France = 8
3 x MIL, Mountain DIV

USSR = 9
GARR, INF x 2, 1 x Saved in Minsk

Reinforcement

France: MS406 in Paris, Remove Naval Air

Nice new title of the thread. Although it would have been nicer if it told people at it is supposed to contain some sort of AAR action.

Edit: Something like this? - No Axis filth allowed! (AAR)

re: Operations in the Baltic - no need for a leg division (infantry class, not motorized) to be in a port, it can be embarked from a coastal hex when an SCS stops in a sea-box. The Russians only have one port to use - Leningrad - and they will want three units in that hex to attack or advance across the border.

Ahh, but the Baltic States have ports. Normally you want the USSR to claim the Baltics in late 1940, when the USA might have some 0 or 1 chits that the Allies could lose. But if you are going to press the issue in Finland, the choice you have to make is related to how many chits the USA has and how that might influence the German decision in Finland. Most players will give up the Borderlands but some won't. Moving into the Baltic States and losing a chit might influence your desired outcome in Finland, might not.

I think traditional Peacekeepers are a possible bug question in MWiF? Such German units - usually a GARR and a MIL, possibly placed in Finland more than once, can really slow an advance on Helsinki, but I don't know how they are currently working.
