What are you going to do with yourself once the turns start trickling in at 1 a day or two? :P

That's always a behind-the-scenes factor isn't it? Sudden success on one side leading to sudden "real life issues" on the other?

In this case, though, it would actually be a pretty sweet accomplishment. I could catch up on my sleep.

There you go, CAP.

But I seem to remember that at Missionary Ridge, the victorious Yankees got their revenge by yelling, "Fredricksburg! Fredricksburg!"

That reminds me of a story I once read about a World Cup Soccer match between England and Germany during the late '60's.

The English won, and after the match the English fans were chanting at the Germans...

"Two world wars and one world cup!"

+1

He could indeed have been up the proverbial creek without a paddle. How does a force with AO's evade an all-Fletcher force?!

Well, the visibility was 11,000 yards in 64% moonlight, so either he had a great smokescreen or the KB TF barged its way in between!

Now is definitely the time to go in for the kill - there are always more Allied carriers, but if John loses more here, the KB is finished as a true deterrent.

Given your relative positions, that you are closer to available shipyards (Pearl) than John is to his, you can afford to take damage if it means putting more flat-tops out of the war or at the bottom.

If John was in the same position, he'd do exactly the same.

To be fair it still a chant at football matches.
Especially the 5-1 drubbing we gave them in Munich a few years back.

(though they have by far exceeded us in World Cups now).

Just got caught up on the last few pages.

When done on the very fine victory.
Pursue sensibly, do not get greedy though.

The ultimate worst nightmare for an Empire player.

Deep in Indian territory with burning carriers, no friendly LBA air cover/ limited search capability and no doubt logistic issues to boot.

I think we have all been there and that is why I refuse to go deep outside the umbrella of LBA once you are deep into 42. The introduction of the Hellcat ensures strike packages will get through (no matter how much CAP is deployed) and Japanese carriers will burn.

Having trapped aircraft on burning carriers also makes a difference??? Not too many options left here for your opponent except to suck it up and perhaps send surface taskforces at your CVs to try and buy space and time.

Regardless well played and very enjoyable viewing.

Oh, and there is no way that he's going to keep Wake from falling now....and your other Marshall operations are definitely secure.

Oh, my! Well, I didn't sleep well last night. I tossed and turned. But since I am uncommonly supple at my age, tossing and turning is not an issue.

I know what you mean about luck. I assume I got some decent rolls of the dice. But there are so many factors that enter into it:
1. John's utter lack of detection. How in the world did that happen and how does he linger while it's ongoing?
2. It looks like he had some really strange TF compositions. I know (or I've been contending) that he may be short on combat ships, but it seems like he's cramming huge TFs with everything.
3. He probably was lulled into a sense of security since I hadn't responded to any of his raids or JEB Stuart rides to this point. But while he was raiding and using fuel and expending sorties and fatigue, my ships were stationary, replenishing, and replacing lost aircraft. There wasn't luck there.
4. To some extent he might have been lucky too. Like the AOs eluding a good Fletcher TF. That could have been cacaclysmic for him.

There's luck in the rolls, but mainly this was a function of alot of decisions made by both sides.

I think the biggest luck factor was his big carriers being eight hexes away. This range can be a two headed sword and does not always work for the Japanese. As a result, having only one possible target, you delivered a full strike package on his mini KB and destroyed it outright rather than having dispersed strikes hitting more than one TF. In return, he sent in uncoordinated strikes (Lack of DL probably) at max range (more cripples lost to OP) which you chewed to bits. That was a win-win for you. However, he made enough mistakes to compound your luck. That is all on him.

That is a fantastic assesment of something I often overlook along with other players, the DL and the extra DL put on the night portion of the air search.

Luck is often made and has to be exploited, when presented. That you did after weighing all the options and agonizing all night. It wasn't easy but you prevailed and now he is on the ropes staggered but not without options, though they may not be very attractive.

Well played, Sir, and a very gentlemanly message sent to your opponent. I think you owe it to a great opponent to press as hard as you can, rather than holding back.

Thin Man: Today was absolutely staggering in its violence. The fight was at close range - bare knuckle and brutal - and then at a distance with air strikes that got savaged by enemy CAP but still managed to deliver blow after blow. Allied air losses are tremendous. And the vexing thing is that many Japanese ships were badly and perhaps mortally damaged but precious few confirmed kills. What a titanic clash it was.

The day began with a series of intercepts by Allied combat TFs, small and large. These tangled with multiple carrier TFs - some large, others damaged - and inflicted mostly minor damage. Eventually a big USN CA TF got into it with a massive Japanese CV TF, inflicted some damage, but took plenty of its own.

These combats were a series of intense, long-lasting clashes. The CA TF, for instance, was involved in three sequential combats so that, by the third (the big one), it was probably low on ammo. But in the first one it sank badly damaged Kaga, the first confirmed fleet CV casualty. When it tangled with the main Japanese CV TF it damaged many ships, but none to an appreciable extent.

But these no doubt fatigued an already weary enemy, slowing them down more.

Allied air attacks got bloodied badly by strong CAP over the main Japanese CV TF. On the day, the Allies lost 300 aircraft. That's something over 500 in just two days. Then the strike aircraft began targeting more isolated TFs, doing strong damage to some flattops, especially a few CVL.

I'll post the full combat report (very long) after this one. But it seems like there are two categories, as follows:

Heavily Damaged or Sunk:
CV Kaga: 3TT, Sunk (S)
CVL MIzuho: 7B, Heavy Fires/Heavy Damage
CVL Chiyoda: 8B, HF/HD
CV Zuikaku: 4B, HF/HD
CV Hiyo: 4B, HF/HD
CVL Chitose: 4B, HF/HD
CV Akagi: 1B, HF (a special case - she must've been crippled yesterday to in a small TF apart from the others)
CB Kaurachi: 15B, HF
CL Yuhagi: 4B, 1TT HF/HD
DD Susuzaki: Sunk
DD NIshikazi: 3B, HF/HD
DD Natsuzuki: 4B, HF/HD
DD Sagiri: 1B, HF
DD Udachi: 1B, F/HD
DD Ushio: 3B, HF/HD
DD Yuzuki: 1 mine (at Wake), F/HD

Not crippled, but some at least somewhat damaged by surface combat. This group should escape:
CV Shokaku
CV Taikaku
CV Renkaku
CVL Shoho
CVL Ryuho
CB Ikona
CA Iwaki
CA Hikari
CA Atago
CA Myoko
CA Kumano

Therefore, after three days of battle, John has lost or could well lose 8 CVE, 3 CV, 3 CVL. Akagi is a special case that I'm not counting on. That might be a haul of 14 carriers.
On the other hand, John escapes with 3 CVs (plus possibly Akagi), 2 CVLs and a host of CAs.

John sent a message that whether he continues depends on what happens tomorrow. In the event his big remaining carrier TF gets in trouble, he probably concedes or gives it careful thought.

But I can't press home the carrier engagements. I've lost a huge number of aircraft now. Sorties are down to as low as 42%. But any further attacks against the massed CAP will just bleed the carrier air dry. IT's even possible John will load up these carrier with strike aircraft and attack. I don't think so, but it's possible.

But I do have some combat TFs still capable of pursuit and engagement, so they'll press on. I think BB Kirishima TF is inbound, but not close enough to hit me tomorrow.

So my carriers may pull back a bit while providing cover for the ships most heavily damaged. Other ships will make for Pearl. But a fair number of TFs are in excellent fighting condition. And, if necessary, they can replenish at Midway, where an AE, AKE and AD are about to arrive (sent from Kodiak 10 days ago to serve the invasion of Wake Island). And CV Bunker Hill, CVL Cowpens, and three CVE will soon augment the Allied carrier fleet. The invasion TF is nearing French Frigate Shoals, so that's only about a week off, assuming my BBs remain armed (as they currently are).

The Allies did lose two good ships today: DD Elliott in surface combat and an AO at Mili, where CAP did a poor job. One bomb was enough to sink her.

Allied LBA managed some hits too: B24s scored one hit on a flattop, if memory serves, and another on a CB. And Beauforts and Vindicators from Wotje damaged or sank a half dozen xAK near Bikini, possibly bringing reinforcements to Roi or Kwaj. Lots of squads killed in those attacks.

A great day for the Allies even though very costly. But it was worth administering such punishment to an already staggering enemy. I'll try again tomorrow.

I know John has to be in agonies right now. All of us who have been through this before (that's me, many times, most recently at Sabang) know how it feels. Tough times for him. I hope well-meaning Forumites aren't filling his AAR with comments about what he did wrong.

Very disappointing to hear. On so many levels.

PS: CR, very well done over the past several weeks. You have stayed true to your operational goals and really played very well.

It would be quite disappointing if he threw in the towel. A lot of interesting moments lie ahead.

You are probably writing the post now, but if not could you show us the combat report? [EDIT: 21 seconds after my post.]

Cheers,

Gents, I think John's big remaining TF will make a clean escape. That, I think, was what he's conditioning his continuance on. He'll need to gather his thoughts and work his resolve, but he'll stick. And he'll fight hard.

Make sure to get some sleep tonight CR.

On whether John continues, I think he owes it to you to continue on regardless. We've all seen him enjoy clobbering his opponent in the first 1800 months of the game many times. Frankly, I'd like him to continue to really see his mettle and learn whether he's a one trick pony. I for one, will be disappointed to not get to follow your road to victory if he concedes.

You need time to let your pilots rest and reload all your ships too. Replenishing air groups is gonna take a loooong time.

Re: the lonely Akagi - I bet she is out of fuel. None of the damage you did to her seems enough to have her separate like that. Your SCTFs may find other ships out of fuel too .....

I wonder if those AOs retreated toward Midway when they met with the Fletchers ...

And congrats on continuing a bloody battle and prevailing. Would have been easy to call it off in the face of all that CAP.

My Hellcats are okay, but my strike aircraft squadrons are mostly trashed. So Death Star will move towards Wake, though it will be in a position to it Akagi if she's still moving slowly.

So, can I proceed with the Wake invasion? Yes, I think so. I'll have plenty of carriers. Ent and Hornet will retire to Pearl, but their places will be taken by newly a newly arrived CV, CVL, and three CVE.

As for aircraft, there are plenty of fighters (roughly 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the Hellcats). I think I can work out ways to get more SBDs and some TBFs to maintain a credible offensive power.

The main question is the BBs. Thus far they haven't fired their main guns in this battle. That may change tomorrow. If they do have to replenish, that will slow things down. But if I can count on four or five BBs at Wake, I'll proceed.

Man, I need sleep. I just sent John the turn, so I think I'll sleep well tonight.

I think John will continue. I'm trying to encourage him a bit (without overdoing it). It's always better when a player fights through the hard times. It's tougher to look in the mirror when we walk away.

Notice aircraft loss totals and ships loss totals on the eve of combat, just before the shooting begins on Sept. 19, 1943.

Totals after three days of battle.

Allied air losses have been immense.

Japanese ship lost totals probably will rise dramatically as more cripples sink.

I think John may have lost as many as 10 DDs in this battle. That's a significant number considering what he'd already lost to this point in the game.

In all of the night time surface engagements your radar gave you early detection of the Japanese ships. You were able to close to within maximum visibility and achieve surprise. The results of the night time engagements were kind of disappointing given your element of surprise and the ranges at which you opened fire. I guess your night fighting experience was not good enough to achieve the decisive results that were possible, or the Japanese night experience was good enough to avoid disaster. None the less, you forced the Japanese to use vital OPs that hindered their maneuverability when the air strikes came during daylight.

How serious were your pilot losses over the last few days? What condition are your squadrons in with respect to pilots? Will you be transferring pilots to fill out "ace" squadrons, or will you keep a cadre of veteran pilots in all squadrons now that you have a distinct numerical superiority in carriers?

Gents, I think John's big remaining TF will make a clean escape. That, I think, was what he's conditioning his continuance on. He'll need to gather his thoughts and work his resolve, but he'll stick. And he'll fight hard.

+1

It would be sad for you not to play through the full game. To endure for so long the punishment, then have one redemptive battle, it doesn't really fill up your dark glass completely. The game at its best is about fulfilling a plan and seeing that through against an opponent who is equally determined.

It would be sad for him too. It feels bad to have this happen, to lead it to happen in this way especially, but it's a long war. There are other points of resistance he'll be able to make. I fear though that he simply doesn't enjoy the smaller, more intricate details of the game so necessary to playing the Japanese side well into the endgame. I hope due to your friendship he staggers on and finds some joy in the resistance and seeing the results of his mod into the final years.

So he's lost a lot of carriers.

Not down to luck, not down to bad dice rolls, but to rubbish play on his part and good play on CRs and he's thinking of quitting?

Its a game where us JFBs enjoy the good times and the bad times, or what is the point of playing?

He owes you to keep playing to be honest

If John wants consoling, he can always keep bashing me up......(bloody Banzias)
However, if he quits this game, a game where he has all the toys plus more, it will hardly
fill me with confidence for the future............
