The allies moves in Italy were with an eye for an assault on the mountain hex directly west of Taranto and with the intention of screening, and not attacking, Messina.

During the land combat phase, even with HQ support from Bradley, the best odds that the allies could get on the mountain hex west of Tranato was +7.643 on the assault table. With two Italian units stacked in the hex this meant that the allies needed a modified roll of 19 or higher to take the hex. The odds for this were put at 51%, just a hair better than a coin flip. The odds for a disastrous roll; i.e., a modified 14 and the loss of 3 units, was put at 5.4% (approximately 1 in 20). With these odds allied high command consider the risk too much and decided to delay the attack. So, no attacks by the Western Allies in Italy were made this impulse.

In fact, no land combats were made by the Western Allies anywhere this impulse. In Malaya the CW considered the possibility of another assault on the Japanese stack. With 3 Japanese units in the stack then a modified roll of 20 or higher was required to take the hex. The best odds the CW could get even with HQ support was +6 on the assault table. This gives the CW only a 28% chance of a successful attack. The chance that the CW would lose 3 units was put at 7%.

The CW did try to improve their odds in Malaya with an artillery ground strike. Unfortunately for the CW, and fortunately for the Japanese, the ground strike was an utter failure.

The "inadvertent" decision to retreat the Japanese 7-3 infantry corps instead of shattering it last allied impulse actually paid off this impulse with the destruction of said infantry corps.

The Germans took a combine in the hopes of getting a good result in the North Atlantic with their u-boats and really hurting the Western Allies. In retrospect, the Germans should have taken a land because six land moves wasn't enough for everything they'd needed to do in the Soviet Union. I think the German player got a little too greedy.

Japan uses the combine to replace the lost territorial with a white print 7-3 infantry army. This definitely frustrates MacArthur who should be drinking tea in Manila instead of now trying how to capture the more heavily defended city.

No land combats. The odds just weren't there in the rain.

The Germans do manage to take Krasnador.
