Today the story was lots of enemy subs around Gove, particularly between Gove and Darwin. This is probably an effort to finish off Lexington as it exits the area. Lexington has luckily hid in bad weather the past 2 days, and is now past Gove and near Groote Eylandt, heading for Normanton. It will do minor repairs there, and wait a little while before chancing the passage by Horn Island, where there have also been lots of subs.

Near Gove, I-169 took a depth charge hit. I-19 was attacked by a DMS. Near Koepang, sub Sunfish spots 2 destroyers but doesn't get a shot.

Northwest of Timor, sub Spearfish spots an escorted CM, but 4 torpedoes miss and Spearfish takes moderate damage. The sub will head to port for repairs.

South of Boela, sub Seadragon spots a big xAK task force, but misses with torpedoes fires at a patrol boat. These ships are southbound, destination unknown, but I'm guessing Saumlaki, judging from its path.

The enemy cruisers that started at Koepang, came east, staying south of Timor, and went adjacent to Babar, continued east. It seems to be a forward guard for the xAK task force. 6 Kingfishers at Babar attacked the ships today, finding 4 Oscars overhead. 4 planes bombed but missed, and a couple of Kingfishers were lost.

3 B-17 squadrons flew from Wesel Island and attacked the airfield at Babo, doing minor damage. No CAP was found. Babo is a size 1 airfield.

Slow battleship New Mexico, a cruiser, and 3 destroyers bombard Port Moresby. 107 casualties, and minor damage to the airbase and port. Another battleship will bombard tonight, and the US troops will deliberately attack. It will be an attritional battle, I'm afraid, but the Allied troops are now drawing supply from Oro Bay and Buna, so it's a fight that we will win.

From the map, you see only a couple of the enemy subs by Gove. Almost every hex in the red circle has a sub. Some hexes have more than one. It's fortunate that Lexington made it past this area just before all these subs arrived.

Fletchers will make a high speed run into Saumlaki, hoping to find ships arriving.

My sub to the west of Darwin has detection level today, meaning that the enemy task force, spotted a bit further west yesterday, has moved closer to Darwin. I dropped some mines along the coast today.

6 Fletchers ran into Saumlauki at night, but found nothing. Now split into 2 task forces and placed on ASW duty and heading to repairs in eastern Australia.

AM Bowen was on the inbound route to Port Moresby, the route that my bombarding task forces have been taken. I-10 spots Bowen but misses with 4 torpedoes.

Near Gove, my Fletcher task force sank I-19.

Near Balikpapan, sub Blackfish hit patrol boat Tomitu Maru.

North of Taberfane, sub Guardfish fires spots the big xAK task force but misses a target with 2 torpedoes.

I-16 fired 6 torpedoes at CL Durban near Gove. It's part of the cruiser task force that is now going to run into Taberfane.

My big cruiser task force from Milne Bay bombarded Port Moresby. Then BB Royal Soverign and escorts did also. Damage from both was slight to minimal.

An enemy cruiser task force bombarded Babar. I believe this task force was the one that trekked all the way from Koepang, passes Babar and went east. Then went west to hit Babar. Could be another task force, who knows. Damage was slight. Port damage was repaired by daylight.

Just south of Koepang, sub Jack spots what looks like a carrier task force, without actually spotting a carrier. Jack fires 4 torpodoes at CS Chitose, getting 2 hits, but 1 is a dud.

The Durban task force gets good hits on I-18.

And DE Foxhound, patrolling on its own, pummels I-16 with depth charges, and almost certainly sank the sub. The sub fired first and missed with 2 torpedoes.

North of Darwin, RO-60 hits Dutch sub KIX with 2 torpedoes, sinking it. KIX was already badly damaged and limping toward Darwin.

The first Allied ground attack at Port Moresby occurs. The enemy gets the worst of it, despite the odds and that the forts were not dropped. 49 Allied squads were destroyed, but it turned out that almost all were part of the NG Vol Rifles Battalion, almost eliminating the unit. The divsions took very few losses. I'll rest a day and then repeat.

The enemy ships south of Boela went to Taberfane and Dobo. There had been a full enemy division at each base. SigInt shows that Dobo has the 8th Division/B, meaning that it has been split. I believe that some or most of the enemy troops are being pulled out.

I will run 3 CAs, 2 CLs, and 3 DDs into Taberfane tonight, looking for a fight, not bombarding. Then 3 P-38 squadrons will sweep, followed (hopefully) by a bunch of B-24s hitting the airfield.

Lots of shipping destined for Darwin is now holding southeast of Gove. A bit too hot at the moment, with possible carriers south of Timor.

Lexington will arrive at Normanton today. Other carriers wait at Townsville, waiting for 3 fast battleships to arrive in a few days.

An exciting day.

At Batjan, a dot base just south of Ternate, destroyer Usugumo found a recently laid Allied mine. Batjan in on a possible naval route south to Boela, and finally a minefield works!

Near Gove, subchasers go after I-22, but don't get it. The subs aren't seen today near Gove, but I think that weather played a part in that.

With lots of shipping at Taberfane, I chose to run a cruiser force in and see what it could get. My wise opponent moved a combat task force just to the southwest, ready to intercept anything inbound. The fight occurs at night, with low visibility due to rain. The Japanese do very well.

The Japanese torpedoes had a big effect. The Allies did have one of their torpedoes hit a Japanese destroyer, but it was a dud. 3 cruisers were lost.

Then, at first light, as the Allies withdrew south toward Gove, the same enemy cruiser force chased them down for another engagement. The fight was less severe, probably due to ammo depletion, but the Allies did more damage in this fight, despite having 3 fewer cruisers.

Off the north coast of New Guinea, sub Wahoo torpedoed an ACM.

Near Taberfane, 3 Kingfishers, flying from Babar, attacked CM Natsushima, but missed. I can expect mines at Taberfane now.

P-38s from Merauke swept Taberfane, finding Tojos and Oscars. Losses were light, a few enemy and 1 P-38.

Enemy carriers were spotted at the eastern tip of Timor. Today I'm sweeping Taberfane again, and hopefully my B-24s will fly today to hit the airfield. Lots of shipping is leaving Gove, heading south. The enemy is within range of a strike at Gove, and all of my ships must be tempting. Even the carriers are within striking range.

I'm sure that Walker is splitting the infantry divisions at Dobo, and probably at Taberfane, and probably loading them right now. The question is, where are they going? I expect a counter-invasion at Babar, but TImoeka could also be hit. With the carriers where they are, Babar is more likely right now. I can't rule out something more aggressive though, like strikes at Darwin, Wesel, Gove, or Merauke. But I still think Babar.

Lexington made it to Normanton safely, and will stay there for a week or two repairing SYS damage. It will then move past Horn Island and start the long trek to Pearl Harbor.

The 3 undamaged US carriers are still at Townsville. Soon there will be 4 fast battleships there. I'll form a 3 carrier task force with these battleships, and 2 CLAAs, and head to Gove. I'll have to be careful with just 3 carriers, but I may find an opportunity. At least I'd like to get another round of shipping into Darwin, carrying lots of stuff for the next round of invasions.

Hi Speedy and welcome! Yes, the game is interesting. I've used a strategy of trying to keep my opponent's interest at places of my choosing. Right now, that is Babar. Previously, when I went after southern New Guinea, it was Taberfane and Dobo. Walker reacted strongly and retook those two bases while I concentrated on Milne Bay to Lae. Now I have Babar out by itself, and I expect a counter-invasion there soon too. Babar has taken the heat off of Darwin, which I've strongly reinforced and supplied, and that will be the jumping off point for Timor. But for now, I'm a bit exposed at Babar and Timoeka, with just 3 operational fleet carriers. Note that CV Essex is due to arrive in just a couple of weeks though.

It's been fun trying the Allied side. In this game, I have the feeling that each small defeat, like Taberfane and Dobo, are very minor speed bumps to victory. When I play the Japanese, however, I feel like defeats have to be avoided, and I have the mindset that I'm going to lose absolutely every base and unit eventually. The goal is to make the most of each and make each defeat as painful as possible for the Allied player.

Very different approaches to the war and the game.

P.S. Speedy and I are in a long-running game where I am the Japanese player. We are in the fall of '43 and I'm starting to feel the weight of Speedy's Allied juggernaut! :)

Sub Whale spots a big AO task force near Soerbaja, fires 4 torpedoes at a destroyer, and misses. The location was SE of Soerbaja, implying that fuel was or is being brought east.

A big Allied cruiser force, the one that has been guarding Milne Bay, bombards Port Moresby. Results are good, with over 400 casualties and most importantly, more troop disruption.

Did I say that I wanted Babar to be the enemy's point of focus? Well, today it was bombarded by a big battleship task force. 5 battleships! Hyuga, Ise, Yamashiro, Fuso, and Musashi are listed. Over 400 casualties, and lots of damage to the size 1 port. The worst of it is that every bit of supply is destroyed at Babar. I greatly expand flying in supply, by seaplane and by air drops. It will be difficult to get supply in by ship. Maybe with carrier support. We'll see.

I moved SBDs to Timoeka yesterday, with P-39s to fly escort. In the morning, all fly to Dobo and hit an xAK convoy. Surprisingly, there is no CAP.

Half of the SBDs survive long enough to drop bombs on a cruiser task force at Taberfane, but all bombs miss. Total losses are 18 P-39s and 10 SBDs. Remaining aircraft leave Timoeka to rebuild. The size 2 airfield at Timoeka will undoubtedly get enemy attention immediately.

Looking at the map, enemy carriers moved slightly north, to a point northeast of Dili. I got SigInt today that 8 Division/B was loaded on xAKs and moving to Boela. This is the exact unit that was at Dobo, and may very well be the unit hit by my SBD strike.

I would not call that great progress at PM. Most of the casualty difference is in the support units the IJA lost, but you lost a lot of vehicles disabled. If those are your tanks I would not attack again until almost all are repaired. They are the "hardest" part of your AV and have the best firepower contribution. You need them against his forts.

I'll keep a close eye on the tanks. I do still think I'm making good progress though. The results say that the base is going to fall. I have a supply path from Buna, so that isn't a problem. I'm sending in more by small xAK soon, just to top units off. I believe that I can repeat these attacks. Maybe it won't be with just one day of rest. We'll see.

In addition, I'm just a few days from having the support parts of one of my infantry divisions at Lae make it there. Then I'll start reducing Lae also.

Subs Tunny, Pike and S-30 spot a carrier task force moving from NE of Timor to SW of Boela. All fire on destroyers and all miss. We've seen some luck getting carrier hits, for both sides. Transiting sub infested waters is a dangerous business. Keep doing it, and the inevitable will happen. Today just wasn't the day though.

The enemy arrives at Timoeka, as predicted, to retaliate for my SBD strike. Cruiser Myoko hits a mine. The task force them pummels O21 at Timoeka, then bombard Timoeka, and it's a nuclear bombardment for just one cruiser and 5 destroyers. Leftover planes at the base were damaged. 252 casualties, including destroyed squads. Airbase hits 23, airbase supply hits 14, runway hits 66, port hits 35, and port supply hits 9. I think the non-jungle terrain (swamp) was a factor.

The US landed combat engineers at Shemya and Agattu Islands, adjacent to Attu. The bases were undefended but still enemy controlled. I will build them, along with Attu. Shemya is captured by shock attack. The other will be taken today.

Timoeka is then swept by 45 Zeros. There is no CAP.

Several P-38s squadrons sweep Taberfane. 9 Tojos and 8 Oscars downed, for the loss of 8 P-38s.

33 Nells bomb Babar's port. The port is already heavily damaged, and there are no ships there. Could be an attempt to hit my Marine coastal defense unit's guns?

North of Taberfane, at dot base Kai-eilanden, I've had a tiny unit of commandoes. They were finally discovered, and Sallys bombed them today.

Then Sallys bombed Babar, the port again.

Then carrier based Kates bombed Babar's port.

Then a big carrier strike of 100 Zeros and 90 Kates bomb Babar's port, causing 2 port hits. Lots of enemy carriers are now adjacent to Boela, just to the southwest of it, in the shallow water. Hugging a friendly airbase again.

3 US carriers will near Horn Island today, on the way to Gove. Wasp and Hornet are repairing at Sydney. Wasp has about a week to go, Hornet has about 3 weeks to go.

Despite flying in supply to Babar, there's almost none there. I'll continue to try. I must get supply there before a counter-invasion happens. At least my units there have supply, for now.

I plan to use the carriers to get shipping into Darwin. I won't go after the enemy carriers with just the 3 US carriers, but I will use them if Babar is counter-invaded.

BC Repulse now has several Brit cruisers and US destroyers, and is in the Gove area.

I attack again at Port Moresby. Looking at the armor there, I have the 2nd USMC Tank Battalion with 42 Stuarts and 9 disrupted. The 193 Tank Battalion has 33 Stuarts and 17 disrupted, along with 9 Stuarts and 8 disrupted. The 29 Armor Regiment has 12 Stuarts and 24 M3s, with nothing disrupted. I hope it is enough to continue to make progress. If not, a more prolonged rest will be in order.

North of Dobo, S-30 finds a task force with at least 3 CMs. No shots fired.

Northeast of Wessel Islands, a subchaser group finds I-168, gets 2 good ASW hits and lots of minor hits, but no confirmation of a sinking.

An incredible ASW attack takes place north of Dobo. 2 Japanese patrol boats are spotted by Dutch sub KXIV. 2 torpedoes miss a target. Then, in the most amazing ASW attack that I have ever seen, one of the patrol boats attacks the sub. In the first 5 drops, 4 solid hits are achieved. I think that each drop was just a single depth charge. Incredible, especially for a patrol boat. The sub explodes underwater. Have to give credit to that patrol boat captain, amazing.

Zeros sweep Babar, but there is no CAP. There isn't even an airfield yet. The port is repairing, but still about 50 damaged.

The Allies attack again at Port Moresby. I'll check disruption and tank disablements, and decide when another attack will occur.

I agree jwolf. I've ordered another attack. A victory will send the enemy into the mountains, to Kokoda. I'm moving a regiment inland from Terapo to try to cut off any extended retreat north. I may not get there before the enemy does, but I think that the regiment will defeat that small unit, in that case. My regiment will completely seal off the southern part of New Guinea.

Then I will retask my 2 divisions for future operations.

Enemy minelaying sub I-123 moves to Babar, but finds an Allied minefield. Possibly sunk.

B-25s continue to interdict troop movement in the interior of New Guinea, with troops moving NW of Kokoda, trying to thread their way north to safety.

Zeros sweep Babar. Then 13 Kates, escorted by Zeros, attack Babar's port. I think that Walker missed this unit when resetting carrier aircraft orders today. No damage is done to the port, and a plane or two is shot down by flak.

At Port Moresby, today's Allied attack doesn't go as well. Time to rest and recover. Interestingly, the enemy all of a sudden gets a (+) for leaders. Supply is adequate, with it flowing from Buna, but I'll send in ships from Milne Bay and Townsville to top off supply in the units.

Enemy carriers are now hugging Ambon. US carriers have refueled south of Gove, and will move NW towards Darwin. A bunch of task forces will accompany them. Most are heading to Darwin, with lots of troops for the next phase of invasions. Some, including lots of APDs on fast transport, will head to Babar and drop supply. I've been sending supply to Babar by air, and that has been successful. The base now has over 600 supply when it had 0. I don't see an imminent invasion of Babar now, but it could always happen within 2 days.

CV Essex will arrive on the map in about a week.

An Australian unit has moved south of Darwin to Fenton, along with an artillery unit. There are a few units at Fenton. Most have continued south and then moved west, running for one of the Japanese held ports at the end of long, long dirt trails. An Aussie unit has arrived at Darwin, prepping for Wyndham. That invasion should happen fairly soon.

Sub Tautog spots an xAK task force well west of Truk. Tautog fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Sinno Maru. Both hit, but one is a dud. There are troops on the ship. After the xAK formed it's own task force, Tautog reattacks, and gets another torpedo hit, and again shows men lost. With 2 hits, the ship is probably sunk. Then during the day, Tautog gets in another attack, firing on an escorting patrol boat, but misses.

Walker set up a bit of a CAP trap over his troops in inland New Guinea. A squadron of B-25s has been hitting the II/66th Naval Guard every day. Today 6 Zeros and 3 Tojos show up on LR CAP. They down 3 B-25s. 2 Tojos are lost.

Forts were lowered. I'll rest a day. Another tank unit will arrive today. I have overstacked to some extent, around 35,000 troops in a hex that allows 30,000. I don't think that will be a problem though. Supply is adequate from adjacent Salamaua.

South of Darwin, the 30th Australian Brigade takes Fenton. Only a few enemy units remained, with most troops having fled south and then west toward the coast.

KB appears to be back near Boela, hugging the airfield. KB has certainly been moving defensively, going back and forth from Ambon to Boela, and generally staying on the north side of Ceram. I can't get complacent though. KB can move 8 hexes to the south and be 7 hexes from Darwin.

Today lots of troop transports will move to Darwin. Lots of APDs loaded with supply will fast transport into Babar. 4 Fletchers will move to Babar during the night also, just in case that the enemy ships to the NE move in. US carriers will move 2 hexes and set up on the coast ENE of Darwin. The mission is to get the troops into Darwin. The next mission, should I choose to accept it, will be an invasion of Saumlaki. Undecided at this point. It's probably not going to happen with KB in range.

Near Dobo, S-27 spots a big battleship group, with Hyuga, Fuso, and Musashi spotted, along with escorts. 4 torpedoes are fired at destroyer Hayashio, but all miss. The ships continue on to Timoeka, where Hayashio then hits a mine, is detached from the rest of the group, and sits there all day. The battleships bombard the base, doing lots of damage to the base in swamp terrain.

At Mangole, a small enemy unit unloads. Mangole is an empty dot base near Kendari, and was still Allied.

At Port Moresby, an xAKL task force starts unloading additional supply for the troops.

S-27 then spots the same battleships as earlier, now heading north, but doesn't get a shot.

Sub Wahoo gets a shot at an xAK task force near Hollandia, but misses with 2 torpedoes.

East of Davao, a newly positioned sub Lapon finds an AK task force (not xAKs), and gets a torpedo hit on AK Asakaze Maru. There are no troops on it.

Results are very good. Enemy strength is dropping quickly. Few Allied losses allows me to attack again today. Port Moresby is close to falling. A large task force holding base and engineer units for Port Moresby has been holding on the Australian coast for weeks. It now starts to Port Moresby. Another task force heads to Port Moresby to pick up troops after the base falls.

One of the US divisions at Lae still has elevated fatigue/disruption, so an attack there will take place in a couple of days. The cruisers that bombarded Port Moresby is now at Milne Bay, and will now start bombarding Lae.

US carriers are not spotted east of Darwin, and will stay in place. Multiple P-38 groups will sweep Taberfane. There are about 60 enemy fighters there. Many heavy bombers will also hit the airfield.

Enemy carriers are sitting by Babo today. Babo, today, just became a size 1 airfield. No coincidence. This hex is in range of Timoeka, making it a good place to cover an invasion.

My xAKLs south of Babar will move to Babar and unload supply. Many task forces are at Darwin unloading troops now. Too many to dock all at once. These forces will take part in an upcoming offensive.

Next on the agenda is an invasion of Saumlaki. Troops are loading at Gove for this. I will be using just APAs for this, hoping to make the landing in just one day. With enemy carriers so close, I think this is pretty much necessary. Of course, KB could move closer to Babar, in which case there will be no landing. But I'm preparing now as if it is going to happen.

Another month complete. No new upgrades due this month.

More supply unloads at Port Moresby.

5 US cruisers bombard Lae. They will do this again today.

Zeros swept Kai-eilanden, north of Dobo. Not sure what this was supposed to accomplish. I have a few troops here that arrived by sub, but it's just a dot base. I wonder if Walker thinks that a sweep would catch air transports if I were dropping supply in.

At Taberfane, P-38s sweep, and find a crack bunch of Oscars. We've run into them before here. Time to whittle them down. Losses are fairly even. Then heavies arrive, doing minimal to moderate damage to the airfield.

Some B-24s bomb Lae's airfield, hoping to prevent fort rebuilding. There's no air opposition.

Another P-38 group sweeps Taberfane, downing 3 or 4 Oscars for no loss.

A huge strike from KB hits Timoeka's airfield. 94 A6M2, joined by 26 A6M3a Zeros, escort 107 Kates. The same damaged Catalinas are damaged again, and moderate damage is done to the airfield. The port and airfield are both now heavily damaged. Then about 40 Sallys join in and hit the airfield also. All this attention, combined with a static KB stationed to the north, make me think that Timoeka may get a counter-invasion soon.

Allies attack Port Moresby again. Results are again good. The end is near for the Japanese here.

I order a shock attack and expect to conquer Port Moresby. Task forces stand offshore, one to pick up combat units, and another to land base support and engineers.

I order a deliberate attack at Lae today, combined with another cruiser bombardment.

Ships with troops bound for Saumlaki leave Gove today. The US carriers east of Darwin, along with a big surface group led by BC Repulse, remain in place, and again, are not spotted. Weather has been kind here, allowing me to save fuel and complete my mission of protecting shipping at Darwin, and starting tomorrow, escorting ships to Saumlaki.

F4Fs from Wessel Island will sweep Taberfane. Heavies will return to bomb the airfield, as will several B-25 squadrons. Suppressing Taberfane will help protect ships going to Saumlaki, and keep Taberfane from being yet another base for KB to hug.

I'm looking into the feasability of putting together a surface group to make a high speed run to the current location of KB. Most of my Fletchers are currently being repaired, but Fletchers would probably be the only ships that would be fast enough to go that far and have a chance of surviving the return to base. Just thinking about it currently. I can see that position by Babo is another of Walker's favorite spots to sit in. Hugging a friendly airfield, and in the shallows to pound any subs that challenge. At some point, I will take advantage of this predictability. With the same kind of thinking, I'm mining the coast northeast of Ambon today.

I'm in the middle of plotting the next turn. Walker has said that he won't be able to do a turn on Wednesday, so I'll finish this turn Wednesday night and hope for a turn on Thursday.

The turn is sent. CV Essex arrives at Balboa in 4 days. CV Wasp has just 2 days to repair at Sydney. CV Hornet has about 20 days left at Sydney.

Checking the ground reinforcements, there's a couple of big Indian para units arriving in India in the next couple of weeks. I have already used one at Babar, and about to use another at Saumlaki. I like the idea of using them in the Pacific. Big para units give me more options. North of Australia, there's just too many places for the enemy to defend everything. I think this is a good place to use these paras. Of course, this limits things in Burma, but Burma remains quiet, and I'm happy to keep it that way for awhile.

xAKLs continue to unload supply to troops at Port Moresby. Topping off their supply every turn is helping me keep up the attacks.

P-38s sweep Taberfane, finding just 8 Oscars left on CAP. 4 or 5 Oscars are downed. 1 P-38 is lost.

Lots of Sallys with Oscars bomb my tiny unit on Kai-eilanden, north of Taberfane. This is proving to be a useful diversion. My unit was brought in by sub, and isn't building the base. But it does attract some attention.

A dozen PB4Y-1 Liberators out of Darwin bomb Broome's airfield, doing good damage to the airfield.

Bombers hit Taberfane's airfield, with only 1 Oscar still flying CAP. Bombing results are good.

I'll rest at Lae for a day, then attack again.

Ships will move into Port Moresby, dropping off base units and engineers, and picking up most of the combat troops.

KB remains in place yet again. Walker really likes that spot just NW of Babo. He knows that I will generally avoid moving subs into the shallows. My 3 carriers cannot contest KB. Wasp is about to be repaired at Sydney, and Hornet will be repaired in about 20 days. After that, maybe I get more adventurous. But for now, the plan is to try to quickly land at Saumlaki and take it, then prepare for the next big adventure.

A side note --- there are 124 ships in port at Soerbaja. Something to think about.

North of Japan, sub Cisco makes an appearance. With the Aleutians liberated completely, I'm sending a few subs north of Japan to interdict resource shipping. Or at least force some ASW activity. Today Cisco finds a task force of small xAKLs, and hits xAKL P-122 with a torpedo.

South of Babar, RO-62 gets hit with one good depth charge attack, but it probably isn't enough to sink it. My carrier task force did the damage, in the shallow water there.

At Wyndham, APDs drop off part of an Australian brigade. The base is undefended. The rest of the unit will follow in a couple of days.

Taberfane is swept by P-38s. There is no CAP. Bombers hit the airfield, adding to the existing damage. Total damage is still just moderate.

At Babar, a combination of A6M3a and A6M5 Zeros sweep. A squadron of Corsairs are on CAP. More Japanese are lost than US. Then Nells arrive, attacking shipping there. Nells aren't escorted, though, and the Corsairs shoot down most of the bombers. 3 bombers drop bombs from 20000 feet. No bombs hit.

Then Sallys and Lilys arrive at Babar, escorted by Oscars. Just a handful of Corsairs are still available, so few planes are downed. The airfield is barely scratched.

Then more Nells arrive, unescorted again, and some are downed. One torpedo hits tiny APc-29, sinking it. I need to look up more information on these tiny transports, not being familiar with them. In the game, they haul and tiny amount of cargo and can't carry troops.

KB shows itself, now just southwest of Boela, hugging the airfield, as usual. A huge strike hits my shipping at Babar:

Obviously a huge and successful raid by KB, but as painful as it was to watch, the reality is that only tiny ships were lost, and no men. A total of 4 xAKLs and 12 xAPcs were lost.

Opposing carrier task forces were 9 hexes away from each other. My carriers are spotted today. My Saumlaki invasion requires just one day of safe unloading to succeed, but with KB currently in range, I don't have that one day. I withdraw my ships toward Gove to await another opportuntity.

On the coast by Buna, the 3rd Marine Division attacks the rather isolated 9th Division and other units. The attack goes at 1 to 6 odds, with casualties for both sides around 700. This will be a long attritional battle, but one that the Allies will undoubtedly win. I have supply and the enemy does not. I will rest as needed and repeat.

Today I will attack at Lae, after resting a day. Support troops are landing at Port Moresby, with combat troops being loaded onto ships.

An interesting note is that Cpt. H.T. Elrod shot down 6 planes over Babar, giving him a total of 8 downed aircraft.

I withdraw the Babar Corsairs to Australia to rebuild and recover. Just one US pilot was KIA today. A good day in the air.

US cruisers bombard Lae again. Lots of casualties to the troops, including many destroyed noncombat squads, as well as some guns and vehicles. Lots of disrupted troops here.

I keep the air pressure on Taberfane, sweeping and bombing. No CAP, acceptable bombing results.

I will rest a day and then attack again. Today, the cruisers will bombard Finschafen, just to mix things up. It's been really nice to be able to base the cruisers at Milne Bay and bombard Lae, return, and refuel and rearm, all in one day. I've kept a small minesweeper at Lae to watch for any mines dropped.

KB moved slightly west from near Boela today, keeping a 6 hex range to Babar and Saumlaki. I won't move on Saumlaki with the current situation, only having 3 carriers in the area. Wasp is now fully repaired and is now leaving Sydney to join the others.

Australians captured an unoccupied Wyndham. Other troops are moving on Katherine, arriving in 2 days.

On New Guinea, troop redeployment continues at Port Moresby. A regiment at Merauke is moving NE to cut off the enemy retreat to the north. Lae will be captured soon. The enemy troops on the coast near Buna will take more time to eliminate.

Now would be a good time to drop mines in that hex just to the right of the word Boela, since he likes to use the same spot near Babo often.

Yes it would BBfanboy, and I have 2 minelaying subs nearing the area. They need one extra day to get there though. I don't like to have my minelaying subs end the day in the minelaying hex, as it shows unusual movement in the shallows for me. I'm moving to within 3 or 4 hexes today, then will drop tomorrow. I'll probably drop some others elsewhere. I just know that I'm going to catch a carrier in the shallows near an airbase eventually.

With the KB committed in the Timor Sea area, is there any chance you could do something nice in the Pacific theater? Right now the Timor area looks like a near deadlock and it seems to be a really tough nut to crack. Good progress in New Guinea, though, after some hard work for a long time. Kudos!
